An integral tilted poppet valve for controlled flow of fuel from a fuel dispensing nozzle, including a poppet skirt, embodied within the poppet valve accessory of this invention, the poppet skirt cooperates with the poppet stem, and the poppet holder and its seal disc, to furnish a sealing of the nozzle, through the poppet valve, when the fuel nozzle is not in use, but that upon actuation of the nozzle lever, elevating its poppet stem, the poppet skirt includes an upper inclined surface for biasing against the poppet holder and its seal disc, to tilt the opening of the nozzle to provide for a minor or trickle flow of fuel through the nozzle to furnish a more precise dispensing of the quantity and value of the fuel being delivered to a vehicle.

A cup for draining residual fuel from a breakaway hose coupling. The cup features a substantially cylindrical rigid stem extending upward from the floor of the cup reservoir, said stem featuring a cavity for receiving the pin of a breakaway hose valve. When the stem is pressed against the valve pin, the valve is opened, relieving pressure within the hose and releasing residual fuel within the hose. The residual fuel drains directly from the hose into the cup, facilitating safe and convenient disposal of the fuel, which may be poured using an integral pour spout in the cup rim.

A fuel storage tank vapor cooler to effect pressure reduction, in a fuel dispensing system, including the application of a refrigeration unit, that operates under the effects of a control unit, sensitive to vapor pressures, and vapor flow, to initiate the operations of the refrigeration unit, and effecting, through a properly located heat exchanger, a reduction in the temperature of the stored vapors, and thereby reducing its incident pressure. Such heat exchangers may be located either within the vapor storage area of the underground storage tank, the heat exchanger may locate in cooperation with the vapor return line, to the underground storage tank, or it may be located within the vent line from the storage tank, to chill the vapors and thereby provide for a reduction in their pressure. Such heat exchangers may be used in combination, or individually, whatever is determined to obtain the results as desired from the system of this invention.

A multi-plane swivel connector for use in attaching a pair of fluid conveying members together, the connector including a pair of swivel portions, that connect together at proximate ends, one end being insertable within the other, a double sealed connection provided at the junction of the connection of the swivel ends together, there being a swivel nut securing externally to the outer end of one of the pair of swivel portions, there being a double sealed connection provided between the said swivel nut and the said contiguous swivel portion, there being a pair of O-rings provided at each of the double sealed connections between the swivel portions, and the connection of the swivel nut to one of these swivel portions, said pair of O-rings at each double sealed connection being of step relationship with one O-ring being of greater diameter than the other O-ring, one of the O-rings being formed of fluoro carbon, while the other O-ring of each double sealed connection being formed of fluoro silicone; and during the formation of the swivel portions, as through their formation as cast metal parts during an injection molding process, the pressures applied during the injection molding process being increased from the moment of injection until rapid cooling of the cast parts occurs, with the increased pressures being applied to prevent dendritic growth of the cast parts.

In a bracket for use in conjunction with a fuel dispensing nozzle, said bracket mounting to the nozzle at the location of the joint between the nozzle and its spout, the upper portion of said bracket extending upwardly and outwardly and formed into a hook arrangement, for securing through the nozzle holster that supports the same during nonusage, while the lower portion of the bracket extends downwardly and is integrally bent for connection with the nozzle, thereby assuring a guide that automatically requires shut off of the fuel pump when the nozzle is inserted into its holster as during nonuse.

The invention provides a fluid tight coupling for securing the spout of fuel dispensing nozzles to the nozzle body and utilizes a metallic annular gland mounted on the upstream end of the spout and positioned thereon by the engagement of a knurled band on the spout with its inner surface by mechanical expansion of the spout, the gland being outwardly shaped and positioned on the spout to be tightly engaged and compressed between tapered surfaces and the body outlet nipple rim and the spout securing clamp nut, with the downstream portion of the gland compressed thereby into tight sealing engagement with a smooth surface portion of the spout to effect a tight fluid seal.

A fuel dispensing nozzle has a diaphragm responsive to vacuum for shutting off the flow of fuel through the nozzle, the diaphragm chamber having a vent to atmosphere through a tube extending to the mouth of the nozzle spout and closeable by fuel in the tank being filled to cause vacuum to actuate the diaphragm and shut off the fuel flow through the nozzle, a valve in the vent tube, a piston for closing the vent tube valve in response to vapor pressure in the tank being filled, a vapor return conduit providing vapor communication between the interior of the tank being filled and the fuel source, the vent tube valve piston being exposed to vapor pressure in the vapor return conduit, whereby to shut off the flow of fuel through the nozzle when predetermined vapor pressure occurs in the tank being filled, and additional means holding the vent tube valve closed and closing the vapor return conduit to prevent vapor leakage from the fuel source except when the spout is inserted in the filler inlet of a tank, and operable upon insertion of the spout into a tank to release the vent tube valve and thereby break the vacuum acting on the automatic shut-off valve diaphragm to open the shut-off valve and permit the flow of fuel from the nozzle through the spout into the tank to be filled.

A fuel dispensing nozzle has a diaphragm responsive to vacuum for shutting off the flow of fuel through the nozzle, the diaphragm chamber normally being vented to atmosphere by a tube extending to the mouth of the spout and closable by fuel in the tank being filled to cause vacuum to actuate the diaphragm and shut off the fuel-flow through the nozzle, and a normally open valve in the vent tube, a piston for closing the vent tube valve in response to vapor pressure in the tank being filled, and conduit means providing vapor communication between the piston and the interior of the tank, whereby to shut off the flow of fuel through the nozzle when predetermined vapor pressure occurs in the tank being filled.

A guard for fuel dispensing nozzles is formed with a hollow projection surrounding and radially spaced from the nozzle spout for sealing engagement with structure surrounding the filler opening of a gasoline tank to provide for vapor recovery and is formed with a receptacle for a vapor return line communicating with the interior of the hollow projection.
