An example imaging apparatus comprises a light source, an imaging spectrometer, an image sensor, control circuitry, and processing circuitry. The light source generates power for delivery at a molecular sample, which can include at least 100 mW. The imaging spectrometer separates light emitted from the molecular sample into a plurality of different component wavelengths. The control circuitry causes the image sensor to scan one or more regions of the molecular sample while the imaging spectrometer is aligned with the image sensor and collects hyperspectral image data of the molecular sample from the light emitted that corresponds to the plurality of different component wavelengths. The processing circuitry performs an image processing pipeline by transforming the hyperspectral image data into data that is representative of a quantification of emitters, absorbers, and/or scatterers present in the one or more regions of the molecular sample.

The invention provides methods and apparatuses for making an artificial, amphiphilic bilayer using aqueous micro-droplets (1-1,000 um dia) in a water-immiscible solvent, wherein immediately surrounding each droplet is a monolayer of amphiphilic molecules; the general method comprising: juxtapositioning the droplets with a focused laser beam such that the monolayers merge to create a bilayer of the amphiphilic molecules between the droplets.

Described are an apparatus and method of moving micro-droplets. A surface has a liquid phase thereon. In the liquid phase is a droplet. Focused at an edge of the droplet is a beam of light. The light beam produces a thermal gradient sufficient to induce the droplet to move according to the Marangoni effect. The movement-inducing thermal gradient may appear within the droplet or within the liquid phase. The composition of the droplet, the liquid phase, and wavelength of the light beam can cooperate to cause heating within the droplet, liquid phase, or both. For example, an infrared laser can cause vibration of an O-H stretch in an aqueous droplet (or in the liquid phase). As another example, adding dye to a droplet or to the liquid phase enables absorption of light from an Argon ion laser. The apparatus and method find particular use in biological and chemical high-throughput assays.

Apparatus and method of moving micro-droplets using laser-induced thermal gradients

The invention relates to microfluidic devices and methods that employ electromagnetic radiation to move a droplet of fluid on a fluid-transporting surface of a substrate. Typically, radiation of a particular wavelength is directed through a substantially transparent material, and the radiation imparts an optical trapping force to move the droplet. In addition, a means for reducing evaporative loss from the droplet may be provided.

A method and apparatus for direct two-dimensional transillumination imaging of a sample immersed in or including a scattering medium at infrared to near-infrared wavelengths. Frequency conversion and time-gating techniques in the infrared and near-infrared range are used to enhance two-dimensional image collection and detection. The apparatus includes a probe radiation source for applying a probe beam in the infrared to near-infrared frequency range to the sample. The probe beam is spread to cover a two-dimensionally extending area of the sample to be imaged. After interacting with the sample, the probe beam is representative of a two-dimensional image of the covered sample area. In one embodiment the apparatus includes a time-gating arrangement for selecting a temporal portion of the probe beam in a narrow time window representative of early arriving photons transmitted through the scattering medium and providing a time-gated beam representative of the two-dimensional image of the sample area. A reference beam interacts with a nonlinear medium to shift the frequency of the probe beam to a different frequency, which may lie outside the infrared to near-infrared range. In many applications of the apparatus the frequency will be shifted upward to a frequency higher than near-infrared. The nonlinear interaction occurs in such a manner so as not to destroy the two-dimensional image carrier by the time-gated beam. A detector operative at the shifted frequency detects the time-gated and frequency-shifted beam to directly record the two-dimensional image.
