The method further includes Receiving at least one inverter characteristic. The method further includes generating a target thermal profile of the propulsion system inverter corresponding to thermal fatigue associated with the at least one thermal characteristic. The method further includes generating a signal to selectively instruct the adjustment of at least one of the vehicle speed control input, a torque demand corresponding to the vehicle speed control input, and the portion of the route based on the target thermal profile of the propulsion system inverter to improve inverter life.

A method of operating a particulate matter sensor having a pair of spaced apart electrodes and a heater includes accumulating particulate matter on the sensor, thereby changing resistance between the pair of spaced apart electrodes. The particulate matter sensor includes a sensing cycle that includes a deadband zone, followed by an active zone, which is followed by a regeneration zone in which the heater is operated to elevate the temperature of the particulate matter sensor to a first predetermined temperature for a first predetermined time in order to oxidize the particulate matter accumulated on the particulate matter sensor. The method also includes interrupting the sensing cycle with a modified regeneration zone which is either higher in temperature or length than the regeneration zone.

Particulate matter detection system and method

A method for starting a compression ignition engine having at least one cylinder with a reciprocating piston located therein, an intake valve configured to control the intake of air to an intake port of the cylinder and an exhaust valve configured to control the expulsion of gas from an exhaust port of the cylinder. The method includes the steps of: cranking the engine, conditioning intake air at the intake port of the cylinder to raise the temperature of air in the cylinder, controlling a valve timing the intake valve and/or the exhaust valve to allow the piston to compress the air within the cylinder, thereby increasing the temperature of the air within the cylinder, and injecting fuel into the cylinder when the air within the cylinder has been heated to a temperature sufficient to support compression ignition of a gasoline and air mixture within the cylinder.

Cold start strategy and system for gasoline direct injection compression ignition engine

A method of quantifying a particulate matter in an exhaust stream includes the steps of accumulating a particulate matter on a sensor. The sensor provides a signal that varies based upon an amount of the particulate on the sensor. The sensor includes a measurement cycle that includes a deadband zone, followed by an active zone, which is followed by a regeneration zone. The particulate matter is calculated after an end of the deadband zone is reached and prior to an end of the measurement cycle.

A system includes an exhaust system fluidly configured to define an exhaust stream. A sensor is arranged in the exhaust system and is configured to be exposed to the exhaust stream and accumulate particulate matter on the sensor. The sensor provides a signal that varies based upon an amount of particulate matter on the sensor. A control system is in communication with the sensor. The control system includes a controller configured to calculate a differential of a conductance signal related to the signal, compare consecutive differentials to identify an erroneous differential in an abnormal signal based upon an anomaly relating to the accumulation of the particulate matter, and reconstruct the abnormal signal by correcting the erroneous differential to produce a corrected, decimated conductance signal. The control system is configured to determine a total accumulated particulate matter adjusted for the anomaly.

A system for controlling the combustion behavior of an engine is provided. The engine is equipped with a plurality of control subsystems that influence combustion in the engine. The system includes a controller configured to receive a plurality of inputs, to determine a desired subsystem states to operate the engine, and to determine a target value for each of a plurality of control parameters, wherein the target values for one or more control parameters depends on the values of the plurality of inputs. The controller is further configured to communicate the target values of control parameters to the control subsystems.

Supervisory control of a compression ignition engine

A GDCI engine control system determines if in-cylinder conditions are sufficient to achieve combustion in a given cylinder or if a misfire is likely. Fuel is delivered to that cylinder if combustion is probable, but fuel is disabled to that cylinder if a misfire is probable.

Adaptive individual-cylinder thermal state control using intake air heating for a GDCI engine

A system for a multi-cylinder compression ignition engine includes a plurality of nozzles, at least one nozzle per cylinder, with each nozzle configured to spray oil onto the bottom side of a piston of the engine to cool that piston. Independent control of the oil spray from the nozzles is provided on a cylinder-by-cylinder basis. A combustion parameter is determined for combustion in each cylinder of the engine, and control of the oil spray onto the piston in that cylinder is based on the value of the combustion parameter for combustion in that cylinder. A method for influencing combustion in a multi-cylinder engine, including determining a combustion parameter for combustion taking place in in a cylinder of the engine and controlling an oil spray targeted onto the bottom of a piston disposed in that cylinder is also presented.

Adaptive individual-cylinder thermal state control using piston cooling for a GDCI engine

A particulate matter sensor includes a first pair of sensing electrodes with a gap therebetween and a second pair of sensing electrodes with a gap therebetween. A method for determining an amount of soot on the particulate matter sensor includes determining the electrical resistance between the first pair of electrodes and the electrical resistance between the second pair of electrodes. The amount of soot deposited on the particulate matter sensor is determined based on the electrical resistance values. The time rate of change of resistance between the first pair of electrodes and the time rate of change of resistance between the second pair of electrodes are determined. The first and second rates of change are compared to each other and to threshold values, and the determination of soot amount may be modified depending on the results of these comparisons.

A low-profile integrated catalytic converter with a coupling assembly comprises a catalytic converter with a coupling assembly integrated into the inlet end of the catalytic converter, which is attached to a mounting flange or exhaust pipe. The coupling assembly comprises two or more flexible bellows, joined together at their periphery, and containing a plurality of undulating ribs. The respective ends of the flexible bellows assembly are secured to the catalytic converter. A coupling travel limiter can optionally be concentrically disposed within the bellows assembly to limit the flexibility of the coupling and direct an exhaust gas stream into the catalytic converter.

The flexible bellow is secured to an end of the catalytic converter at one or more interface points along the periphery of the flexible endcone assembly.
