An operating environment emulation system includes a separate peripheral emulation system having a memory device. The memory device is operable to store one or more executable programs, referred to as emulators. The emulators are operable to emulate an original operating environment. Multiple emulators may be deployed on the emulation system to allow execution and presentation of an original operating environment on several different host computers. The system also includes a method for connecting the emulation system to a host computer or accessory device upon which the emulation will run. The emulator may employ insulation processes to limit interaction between the emulation system and host computer resources.

Transportable volume, local environment repository

A messaging device has a message reception component configured to receive a printable message from a message originator, and a printer that prints the received message and that also prints an origin identifier of the message originator on the print medium. After the message is printed, a user marks it up for reply to the message originator. The messaging device has an optical scanner and optical recognition logic that detects the origin identifier and that instructs the messaging device to send the annotated message back to the message originator. In addition, the optical recognition logic recognizes instructions written on handwritten cover sheets. By preparing such a cover sheet with handwritten instructions, a user can instruct the message device regarding various transmission parameters such as recipients and recipients' telephone or facsimile numbers.

Handwritten instructions for messaging appliances

A communication device configured in accordance with the invention enables communication between a user and a message server that holds plural messages for the user. The communication device includes a processor that is responsive to a user's connection signal to establish communication with the message server and to receive a download from the message server of a list of message identifiers for plural messages awaiting a response by the user. The communication device includes a device for displaying the list of message identifiers, along with indications of potential actions which may be taken with respect to each message identifier. The display apparatus is preferably a printer which outputs a media sheet with the list of message identifiers and associated indicated actions. The communication device includes an input device that is adapted to receive user instructions regarding which of the actions is/are to be executed with respect to each message. The processor accumulates all of the user instructions for the plural messages and dispatches a single command message to the message server. The single command message passes the accumulated user instructions to the message server which responds by carrying out the actions instructed by the user. The preferred input device is a scanner which reads user instructions from the media sheet and inputs them to the processor.

Message database manipulation using a single command to evoke multiple operations on multiple messages

An intuitive menu for visual displays is provided. Modern complex printed pages consist of several printed objects which may be overlaid upon each other. Examples are a main object such as text, a background such as a picture, colored or gray scale field, and the texture or watermark of the page itself. When duplicating such a page using a scanner, a user must choose the relative visibility of the background and watermark with respect to the main object. The invention provides a series of choices representing the relative visibility of the printed objects. Several images are presented to the user who selects the image most closely representing the desired output.

User interface for selecting scanner sensitivity

An educational game for teaching the fundamentals of dimensional analysis, including a chip imprinted with an equal sign, and at least one set of cards. Each set of cards includes at least three (3) cards, each card having first and second faces, each face imprinted with a line bisecting the face to form top and bottom generally rectangular halves. On each card a first symbol is imprinted on the top half of the first face and the same symbol is imprinted on the bottom half of the second face, while a different symbol is imprinted on the bottom half of the first face and that symbol is also imprinted on the top half of the second face. Each symbol appears on an even number of cards. To play the game, one card, denoted the target card, is placed on a surface to the right of the equal sign chip, while the remaining cards are arranged in random order in a row to the left of the equal sign chip, with random faces exposed and the corresponding second faces hidden, the bisecting line of all cards being generally colinear. The cards to the left of the equal sign chip are then, if necessary, flipped to expose the hidden faces until the symbol on the top half of each source card is matched by a symbol on the bottom half of another source card, except for one top half symbol and one bottom half symbol, which match the top half and bottom half symbols, respectively, of the target card.
