A system and method emulate an echo signal from an emulated target in response to a radar signal from a radar DUT. The system includes an antenna configured to receive the radar signal, and to direct a reflected portion of the radar signal away from an incident direction of the radar signal at a predetermined deflection angle to prevent the radar DUT from receiving the reflected portion; and a transceiver configured to provide an RF signal having an RF frequency shifted from a frequency of the radar signal in an amount indicating a distance to the emulated target, and to transmit the RF signal to the radar DUT as an emulated echo signal. An antenna pattern includes a peak beam angled away from a normal incidence of the antenna at a beam squint angle that compensates for the predetermined deflection angle to direct the peak beam toward the radar DUT.

System and method of emulating echo signals from emulated targets with reduced interference from reflection

A variable gain horn and a system for testing an antenna with the variable gain horn is disclosed. The variable gain horn includes a horn adapted to transmit electromagnetic signals to an antenna under test. The horn is adapted to have a diverging lens attached and detached without fasteners at its distal end of the horn by a form fit. When the diverging lens is not attached, the variable gain horn transmit the electromagnetic signals at a higher directivity than when the variable gain horn with the diverging lens attached to the distal end. The system also comprises a parabolic mirror adapted to reflect the electromagnetic signals incident thereon from the variable gain horn to an antenna under test (AUT).

A system for receiving a radar signal transmitted by a radar device under test (DUT) includes: a plurality of antennae disposed in an array of rows and columns; a plurality of radar target simulators (RTS's), one or more of the plurality of RTS's being selectively connected to each of rows or columns of the plurality of antennae. The plurality of antennae are adapted to receive signals selectively from the one or more RTS's connected to the column or row, and to transmit to the signals to the DUT. The system also includes a switching matrix adapted to selectively switch between selected antennae in each of the columns or each of the rows of the plurality of antennae to connect selected respective RTS's of the plurality of RTS's to selected active antennae of the plurality of antennae in a time division manner.

Emulation of spatially distributed objects with a sparsely populated array of radar target simulators

A system for providing a conduit for light to travel between an optical fiber and a photodiode includes a tapered light coupler. A first portion of the tapered light coupler is configured to receive light from at least one optical fiber and includes a tapered region that is tapered toward a tapered end. A second portion of the tapered light coupler is coupled to and extending from the tapered end of the first portion at a junction forming an ordinary angle. The second portion includes a tapered region that is tapered toward a distal end and is configured to transfer light from the distal end to a photodiode that has a smaller surface area than a cross sectional area of the at least one optical fiber. The tapered light coupler includes a slanted surface at an exterior of the junction.

Devices and methods for providing a conduit for light to travel between an optical fiber and a photodiode

Electro-optic (EO) modulators are disclosed. The EO modulators include a substrate and an EO material layer disposed over the substrate. The EO material layer and the substrate provide an optical waveguide having an optical group velocity (OGV). The EO modulators also include electrodes disposed over the EO material layer to provide a coplanar waveguide (CPW). The CPW has a radio-frequency (RF) phase velocity, and the electrodes have a gap therebetween. The EO modulators also include a superstrate disposed over the EO material layer and configured to be raised and lowered, or disposed and removed to tune the RF phase velocity to be substantially the same as the OGV, wherein a space exists between the superstrate and the EO material.

An apparatus is for generating an emulated radar reflection signal of a target moving at a relative velocity. The apparatus includes a radar detector, an emulation transmitter, and a processor. The radar detector is configured to detect radar chirps emitted by a device under test (DUT), where the chirps are emitted at random time intervals. The emulation transmitter is configured to generate emulated radar reflection signals of the target being emulated. The processor is configured to generate control signals at intervals corresponding to the random time intervals at which the radar chirps are emitted by the DUT, where each control signal controls the emulation transmitter to generate a radar reflection signal. A relative phase of the control signals is adjusted according to a duration of each of the random time intervals between successive chirps and a magnitude and sign of the relative velocity of the target.

Frequency modulated continuous wave (FMCW) radar target emulation with synchronized modulation reflection devices

A miniature radar target simulator (MRTS) and a system comprising a plurality of MRTS's are described. The MRTS and system are useful for emulating echo signals for a radar DUT with reduced interference. Illustrative radar test systems desirably generate the intended (emulated) radar targets and reduce unwanted ('ghost') signals, which can result in “ghost targets,” and errant/ambient electromagnetic radiation that reduces the performance and reliability of known re-illuminators and systems including same.

Separating receive and transmit antennas of a radar test system

A system tests a device under test (DUT) that includes an antenna. The system includes a probe antenna, a network emulator, and a near-field antenna. The probe antenna measures beam characteristics of a beam-locked beam emitted over the air by the antenna of the DUT as the DUT is moved relative to the probe antenna during testing of the DUT. The network emulator emulates a base station of a communications network in communications with the DUT. The near-field antenna maintains a call link between the network emulator and the DUT using surface waves between the near-field antenna and the DUT as the DUT is moved relative to the probe antenna.

A system for testing vehicular radar is described. The system include a free-space polarization adapter (FSPA) configured to alter a first polarization state of electromagnetic waves from a radar device under test (DUT) to a second polarization state, which is different than the first polarization state; and a re-illuminator adapted to receive the electromagnetic waves having the second polarization state from the FSPA.

An apparatus is for generating an emulated radar reflection signal of a target. The apparatus includes a radar detector configured to detect a radar signal frame emitted by a device under test (DUT), an emulation transmitter configured to generate an emulated radar reflection signal of a target being emulated, and a processor configured to generate control signals which control the emulation transmitter according to at least one characteristic of the target being emulated. The processor is further configured to determine a current radar parameter among plural possible radar parameters of the radar signal frame of the DUT, and to adapt the control signals which control the emulation transmitter according to the determined current radar parameter of the radar signal frame of the DUT.

A method and system are provided for generating a trigger signal from a radar signal received over the air from a radar under test. The method includes detecting power of the radar signal received from the radar under test at a radio frequency (RF) power detector, the radar signal including multiple bursts of RF energy in a burst pattern; identifying repeating radar frames from the burst pattern using the detected power of the radar signal, each radar frame having at least one burst; and creating trigger signals corresponding to the radar frames, respectively, by synchronizing to the at least one burst in each radar frame.

Method and system for generating trigger signals from radar signal

A system for testing vehicular radar is described. The system include a diffractive optical element (DOE) configured to diffract electromagnetic waves incident on a first side from a radar device under test (DUT). The system also includes a re-illumination element adapted to receive the electromagnetic waves diffracted from the DOE from a second side. The re-illumination element being adapted to transmit apparent angle of arrival (AoA) electromagnetic waves back to the DOE.

Multi-target radar emulator system

A method of testing vehicular radar includes acquiring binary phase codes of transmitters in a radar DUT; acquiring desired FOVs and desired angular resolutions of the transmitters to determine target angles of emulated targets; calculating far field phases of a PMCW signal for binary phase states of the transmit array at each of the target angles to determine resultant phase symbol streams; calculating excess roundtrip time delay for each emulation delay, between the DUT and the emulated targets, and each setup delay between the DUT and each emulator receiver; time-shifting the resultant phase symbol streams by the excess roundtrip time delays; subtracting the time-shifted resultant phase symbol streams from the resultant phase symbol streams to obtain difference phase symbol streams; modulating a PMCW signal transmitted by the DUT by the difference phase symbol streams; and emulating the echo signals at the target angles in response to the modulated PMCW signal.

Radar target emulation and multi-distance emulation using PMCW radar

A device for detecting and selectively reflecting an incident microwave signal or millimeter-wave signal is disclosed. The device includes a plurality of antennae disposed in an array; and a diode disposed at each input of each antenna, each diode having an input adapted to selectively receive a reverse bias signal, or a zero bias signal, or a forward bias signal. The device also includes a switching device connected to each input, and configured to selectively apply the forward bias signal, or the reverse bias signal or the zero bias signal to each of the diodes. In forward bias, each of the plurality of antennae reflects the incident microwave signal or millimeter wave signal; and in zero bias or reverse bias each of the plurality of antennae detects the incident microwave signal or millimeter wave signal.
