A toner container installable in an image forming device having a controller according to one example embodiment includes a housing having a reservoir for storing toner. A chip is positioned on the housing and configured to, after sending a first busy response to the controller of the image forming device, receive a second write command from the controller of the image forming device that is abbreviated relative to a first write command received from the controller of the image forming device and that requests the chip to send a response to the first write command. The chip is further configured to send a response to the first write command to the controller of the image forming device if upon receiving a read command corresponding to the second write command the chip has completed processing the first write command.

Communication between an image forming device and a replaceable supply item

A toner container installable in an image forming device having a controller according to one example embodiment includes a housing having a reservoir for storing toner. A chip is positioned on the housing and configured to receive a first write command from the controller of the image forming device. The chip is further configured to determine whether a transmission cycle bit of the first write command matches a transmission cycle bit of a second write command received by the chip from the controller of the image forming device previous to the first write command. The chip is further configured to resend to the controller of the image forming device a response to the second write command if the transmission cycle bit of the first write command matches the transmission cycle bit of the second write command.

A supply item has toner for use in an imaging device. A chip has memory storing quanta indicating allowed usage of the supply item over its lifetime and a multiplier correlating the quanta to toner mass. The imaging device requires quanta to conduct imaging operations and loads the quanta and multiplier by way of a certificate stored in the memory. The imaging device retrieves quanta from the chip over time and both devices keep tally. Initialization between the supply item and imaging device includes providing encrypted and unencrypted instances of firmware versions and certificates from the supply item that the imaging device can compare for security. Alternatively, the supply item defines a fuser assembly, imaging unit, intermediate transfer member, or other component installed for use in the imaging device.

Component circuitry for a replaceable printer component, including a dynamic address generator which selectively generates component addresses, wherein substantially immediately following an event, the component circuitry performs in succession a plurality of sets of operations, each set of operations including receiving an address change request from a master and generating a new component address by the dynamic address generator in response, a last one of the new component addresses generated being available as the component address for the component circuitry in one or more subsequent communications with the master.

Dynamic address change optimizations

A method and apparatus for configuring an electronics device. The method includes receiving, by the electronics device, a request for a command to perform a predetermined operation by the electronics device and sending the command in response to receiving the request. The electronics device then receives a signature based upon the command, whereupon the electronics device verifies the signature by the electronics device and, following an affirmative verification, executes the command for performing the predetermined operation. In this way, the electronics device may be reconfigured remotely without knowledge of the particular command for performing the predetermined operation by the electronics device.

Method and apparatus for configuring an electronics device

A method of setting an address of a component that includes determining a characterization value associated with a consumable, calculating a number of address change operations based upon the characterization value, and setting a last address generated from the number of address change operations as the new address of the component, wherein the characterization value is determined based upon a usage of the consumable.

A system and method for automatically determining the appropriate printhead/ink tank installation position to move a carrier transporting the printhead/ink tanks for a printing device is presented. The carrier transporting the printhead/ink tank moves along a carrier frame and is covered by a protective cover. Once the protective cover is raised on the printing device, the status of the ink tank is sensed. Based on the ink tank status, the printing device carrier is moved to the appropriate printhead/ink tank installation position. In one embodiment, the status of the ink tank is determined by using the ink presence sensor. In another embodiment, the status of the ink tank is determined by using near field wireless communication with the memory of the ink tank.

Automatic printhead and tank install positioning

A method of controlling a micro fluid ejection device by sensing a middle zone temperature, and selectively applying an amount of power to a middle zone heater to achieve a target temperature. An edge zone temperature is also sensed and power is selectively applied to edge zone heaters to achieve a target temperature for the edge zones, whereby uniform ejection of fluid droplets along an ejector array may be achieved.

A device verification method includes the steps of providing a device including a memory and a print pattern generator communicatively coupled to the memory, the print pattern generator generating image data based at least in part on a first value actually stored in a first memory location in the memory; printing the image data to produce a printed verification pattern; scanning the printed verification pattern to generate a verification value; reading a memorized value purportedly stored in the first memory location of the memory; comparing the memorized value with the verification value; and evaluating the device based on a result of the comparing step.
