If an additional power source is introduced at the distribution level it is then possible for power to flow back into the grid. This is a potentially undesired scenario, so much so that some entities enacted laws to regulate/control this scenario. There are also regulations in some places that restricts off-grid scenarios. The present disclosure is directed to embodiments that can operate with the grid, or islanded, with a range of grid load from 0-100%. 10% grid load is described as a model for abiding by legal interconnection/tax requirements. At the interconnection point/points there is typically protection and or control technology such as fuses in a circuit-breaker that limit current to a particular load or loads. A solution to this scenario, using split load configuration according to embodiments of the present disclosure, allows for both distributed generation and no power flow back into the grid.

The present disclosure is directed to self-synchronizing devices that can connect and self-synchronizes voltage, frequency and phase of two or more power sources. The disclosed embodiments enable a modular power system to serve as the primary or secondary source of power for applications requiring loads from a few kilowatts (KW) to the scale of megawatts (MW). The modular system is generalized to use either a single or multiple power generation sources at once, with the ability to connect and self-synchronize voltage, frequency, and phase of a variety of different types of power sources. Power control systems designed to function with self-synchronizing technology enable a modular power system to satisfy a wide variety of needs, simplifying the existing method of achieving synchronization and enabling new features of resiliency and expandability. The self-synchronization can be implemented into a wide variety of electronics including but not limited to inverters and generator controllers.

Modular microgrid systems and methods

A clutch assembly includes a clutch mechanism and an energy harvesting device. The clutch mechanism includes an input member, an output member, and an actuating mechanism to govern selective torque transmission from the input member to the output member. The actuating mechanism is powered by electrical current. The energy harvesting device is electrically connected to the actuating mechanism, and the energy harvesting device is configured to scavenge available energy to generate the electrical current that powers the actuating mechanism.

An optical device is provided which includes a plurality of optical modules and an alignment compensation module. Each optical module includes an optical component fixedly coupled to a relative reference mount. The relative reference mount is configured to attach to a substrate. A plurality of optical modules mount on the substrate to form the optical device. The alignment compensation module removes residual alignment errors of the optical device.

An optical module for use in an optical device is provided. The module includes an optical component and relative reference mount. The optical component is fixed spacially relative to a registration feature. The registration feature is configured to couple to a fixed reference mount.

The relative reference mount is configured to attach to a substrate. A plurality of optical modules mount on the substrate to form the optical device.

A first optical module has a first optical component prealigned with respect to a reference feature, the first optical module is subsequently mounted to a first predetermined location on the fixed reference. The invention features a fly height measurement system for measuring fly height of a slider over a storage disc. The fly height measuring system includes a source of light, a slider, a detector module and a processor. The source of light produces light along a light path. The slider includes an objective lens positioned such that light from said source hits the objective lens and is directed toward a surface of a disc. Light propagating from the disc is directed to a detector. The processor estimates the fly height of the slider based on detector module output.

An optical alignment system is provided for aligning an optical module of the type which is suitable for use in an optical device. The system includes a reference base having a registration feature that aligns with a registration feature of the optical module. An optical sensor senses an optical characteristic of the optical element and optical element manipulator moves the optical element relative to the registration features of the optical module. A controller operates the optical element manipulator.

An optical module for use in an optical device is provided which includes an optical component. The optical component is bonded to a relative reference mount which can be attached to couple to a fixed reference mount. The bond is formed by solder.

In general, the mode field pattern of a single-mode polarization-maintaining fiber is symmetric. There are preferred axes for the polarization states, but the intensity pattern emerging from the fiber is rotationally symmetric. If a short piece of multi-mode fiber is spliced onto the end of a polarization-maintaining single-mode fiber, it is possible to change the apparent shape of the mode field. The use of a fusion splicer affects the stress pattern in polarization-preserving fiber, and introduces asymmetry into the shape of the fiber mode field. If the spliced fiber is cleaved near the splice, and the asymmetry of the fiber mode field is matched to the asymmetry of a laser diode beam, then the laser beam is coupled efficiently into the fiber without the use of additional beam-shaping optics. The asymmetric beam from the laser is brought to a focus, which is also asymmetric. By matching the asymmetries of the focused spot and the distorted mode field (caused by the addition of the short piece of multi-mode fiber), good coupling is achieved into the fiber. Once the light has entered the spliced fiber and propagated past the splice, the mode field returns to its original symmetric pattern and the light propagates in a single mode, as it would in an unspoiled, single-mode polarization-maintaining fiber. The output from the unspoiled end is still symmetric, and there is little attenuation caused by the splice.
