When coal is combusted, such as in the process of generating electricity, fly ash is produced in abundant quantities. Methods and systems are provided for extracting materials, such as rare earth elements critical for national security or nuclear power generation, from fly ash. A method of processing fly ash includes installing a collection system in a fly ash pond. The method further includes applying water to the top surface of the fly ash pond, such that the water leaches through fly ash and into the collection system. The leached water is processed to remove materials, such as rare earth elements. Systems are also provided.

Methods and systems for extracting materials from fly ash

The present invention consists of an optical mirror element to be used in combination with a light source. Light from a light source contained within the mirror element shank provides illumination in front of and behind the mirror head. In this way, for example, the invention can be used in dentistry both for illuminated, indirect vision in the mouth and as an illuminated cheek or tongue retractor. The invention can be used in combination with any suitable light source including, but not limited to, a conventional lamp, a light emitting diode, or a light pipe.

Optical mirror element

An ambient air cooled high intensity light emitting instrument in which the lamp is contained in a heat sink mounted within the housing. The housing contains a plurality of vent holes which circumscribe the heat sink. As heat from the light is conducted along the heat sink when the instrument is in use, the heat emanates into the chamber surrounding the heat sink, and rises through the vent holes to the surrounding atmosphere, generating a thermal current which replaces the departing hot air with cooler air from the atmosphere.

Ambient air cooled light emitting instrument

A holder assembly for a medical instrument having two sections releasably coupled together. One section is mounted to a support, while the second section, which contains a holder for a medical instrument, can be easily detached from the first section without the use of tools, such that the instrument holder may be sterilized along with the instrument.

Removable instrument holder

The present invention consists of a mirror to be used in combination with a light source. Light is transmitted from the light source through the body of a light conductive shank to a shank heel and face, from which illumination is provided in front of and behind the mirror head. In this way, for example, the invention can be used in dentistry both for illuminated, indirect vision in the mouth and as an illuminated cheek or tongue retractor. The invention can be used in combination with any suitable light source including, but not limited to, a portable pen light type light source (which is maneuverable and easily transportable) or a conventional fiber optic lighting system.
