A system for blending synchronous and asynchronous computer communication applications that determines when a user of a synchronous communication application, such as an instant messaging application, attempts to send a message to another user that is unavailable for synchronous communications, and that forwards the message from the synchronous communication application to an asynchronous communication application for delivery. The forwarded message may be an email message, and the system may operate to determine a destination electronic mail address of the destination user for inclusion in the forwarded message, and include an indication in the forwarded message that it has been forwarded from the synchronous communication application. This indication enables the asynchronous communication application to perform special processing with regard to the forwarded message.

Providing blended synchronous/asynchronous messaging

A method, operable on a processing device, for merging calendar entries may include receiving a plurality of calendar entries each associated with entry identification data. The method may also include comparing by the processing device at least a portion of the entry identification data associated with each of the calendar entries. The method may additionally include merging, by the processing device, the calendar entries based at least in part on comparing of at least the portion of the entry identification data associated with each of the at least two calendar entries. The method may further include comparing at least one time attribute associated with each of the calendar entries and comparing at least one textual attribute associated with each of the calendar entries and basing merging the calendar entries additionally on comparing the time attributes and the textual attributes.

A system for blending synchronous and asynchronous computer communication applications that determines when a user of a synchronous communication application, such as an instant messaging application, attempts to send a message to another user that is unavailable for synchronous communications, and that forwards the message from the synchronous communication application to an asynchronous communication application for delivery. The forwarded message may be an email message, and the system may operate to determine a destination electronic mail address of the destination user for inclusion in the forwarded message, and include an indication in the forwarded message that it has been forwarded from the synchronous communication application. This indication enables the asynchronous communication application to perform special processing when the receiving user retrieves the forwarded message from the asynchronous communication application. The special processing may include automatically determining whether the sending user is currently available for synchronous communications, and, if so, providing a synchronous communication session between the receiving user and the sending user. If the sending user is not currently available for synchronous communications, the receiving user is provided with the option of responding to the forwarded message using the asynchronous communication application.

A method, system and apparatus for the selective notification of incoming electronic messages. In this regard, a selective message notification method can include selectively generating a notification for a received message based upon pre-determined criteria irrespective of how the received message is handled. The pre-determined criteria can include a manually specified criteria, a rules based criteria, or a profile based criteria.

A system for conveniently removing recipients from a message being added to a message thread that enables a user to filter people from a recipient list of a message being added to a message thread. The system advantageously enables a user to filter out potential recipients based on a) their previous non-participation in the thread, b) their lack of registered interest in a topic of the thread, and/or c) their being listed only as recipients by way of their being contained in a group indicated in the recipient list.

Described is a method for generating a parametric search statement for finding a target document. The parametric search statement is generated in the text boxes of a search bar. A user action is performed in the text box. An in-place context menu having menu items responsive to the user action are displayed near the location of the user action. Each menu item includes at least one of an attribute of the target document, a comparison operator and a value. One of the menu items is selected from the in-place context menu based on a known characteristic of the target document. Parametric search statements are easily generated using the method without the need to access numerous dialogs boxes or to enter significant text.

A network device such as a server monitors user behavior and provides subscriptions to documents based at least in part on that behavior. Subscription triggers include requesting at least a predetermined percentage of the entire document, requesting at least a predetermined number of pages in a document, and requesting a document at least a predetermined number of times. If documents are organized in a root and branch structure, the subscription may be triggered based on the extent to which documents are requested in the structure, e.g., triggered upon request for a branch document related to a root document. Subscriptions may also be limited to a portion of a document, such as a branch document associated with a root document.

A method for providing personalized, shared bookmarks that determines which bookmarks are to be shared with a given user based at least in part on an interest profile associated with that user. The interest file can be used to define important other users, based on attributes, titles, or names associated with those other users. Shareable bookmarks defined by important other users are provided to the local user through the local navigation program. The list of important persons used to define which bookmarks should be shared may be determined in various specific ways. An interest profile may be automatically maintained containing a list of persons that are important for a specific user. The list may be automatically calculated based on information such as recent email traffic, and/or can be defined manually. Privacy issues may be addressed by enabling a user to prevent certain bookmarks they define locally from being shared.

System control of compression and decompression of data based upon system aging parameters, such that compressed data becomes a system managed resource with a distinct place in the system storage hierarchy. Processor registers are backed by cache, which is backed by main storage, which is backed by decompressed disk storage, which is backed by compressed disk storage then tape, and so forth. Data is moved from decompressed to compressed form and migrated through the storage hierarchy under system control according to a data life cycle based on system aging parameters or, optionally, on demand: data is initially created and stored; the data is compressed at a later time under system control; when the data is accessed, it is decompressed on demand by segment; at some later time, the data is again compressed under system control until next reference. Large data objects are segmented and compression is applied to more infrequently used data. A dedicated compression input/output processor (IOP) is controlled by host system defined data structures which include a bus transport mechanism (BTM) which is DMA loaded to the compression IOP storage. The BTM includes a request response control block (RRCB) comprising a compress or decompress operation command, a data out descriptor (DOD) for providing the address of data in host storage that needs to be compressed or decompressed, and data in descriptor (DID) for providing the address in host storage where the resulting decompressed or compressed data is to be stored.

A hierarchical cache system comprises first and second pluralities of data caches and first and second respective higher level caches. The first higher level cache is coupled to the first plurality of caches and stores data of the first plurality of caches. The second higher level cache is coupled to the second plurality of caches and stores data of the second plurality of caches. First and second storage controllers access first and second respective address ranges from a main memory and the higher level cache subsystems. The first higher level cache responds to a request for data not contained in the first higher level cache by determining which of the address ranges encompasses the requested data and forwarding the request to the storage controller which can access the determined address range. The second higher level cache responds to a request for data not contained in the second higher level cache by determining which of the address ranges encompasses the requested data and forwarding the request to the storage controller which can access the determined address range.

In a hierarchical, multi-level storage system, recovery from intermittent storage hardware failures is supported by establishing hardware checkpoints at storage system interfaces and by duplication of subsystem hardware within units of the storage system. When error is detected at an interface, all levels of the storage system are quiesced and backed up to a point preceding the occurrence of the error. If a hardware failure causes an error, the system is quiesced while the failed hardware is reconfigured with control logic copied from duplicate hardware. A single restart command restarts system operation.

A hierarchical cache system comprises a plurality of first level cache subsystems for storing data or instructions of respective CPUs, a higher level cache subsystem containing data or instructions of the plurality of cache subsystems, and a main memory coupled to the higher level cache subsystem. A page mover is coupled to the higher level cache subsystem and main memory, and responds to a request from one of the CPUs to store data into the main memory, by storing the data into the main memory without copying previous contents of a store-to address of the request to the higher level cache subsystem in response to said request. Also, the page mover invalidates the previous contents in the higher level cache subsystem if already resident there when the CPU made the request. A buffering system within the page mover comprises request buffers and data segment buffers to store a segment of predetermined size of the data. When all of the request buffers have like priority and there are fewer request buffers that contain respective, outstanding requests than the number of data segment buffers, the page mover means allocates to the request buffers with outstanding requests use of the data segment buffers for which there are no outstanding requests.
