In one or more embodiments, a disclosed method for cooling a vehicle involves routing, by a bypass line, boil-off of a cryogenic fuel of the vehicle past a cold plate to cool a subsystem mounted proximate the cold plate. The method further involves purging the boil-off in a direction away from the vehicle, after the boil-off passes the cold plate. In one or more embodiments, the cryogenic fuel involves liquid hydrogen (LH2), liquid oxygen (LO2), and/or liquid methane (LCH4). In at least one embodiment, the boil-off of the cryogenic fuel involves gaseous hydrogen (GH2), gaseous oxygen (GO2), and/or gaseous methane (GCH4). The vehicle is a space vehicle, an airborne vehicle, a terrestrial vehicle, or a marine vehicle. In at least one embodiment, the vehicle is a fuel cell vehicle (FCV).

Advanced cooling for cryogenic powered vehicles

A method including supporting a plurality of lithium-ion cells disposed within respective isolation chambers of a thermally insulating cell support structure, and disposing a thermal dissipation member between a housing and the plurality of lithium-ion cells so as to collectively form a heat sink with each lithium-ion cell of the plurality of lithium-ion cells and the housing, where the plurality of lithium-ion cells are disposed within the housing, the thermal dissipation member closes a respective open end of each of the respective isolation chambers to physically isolate each isolation chamber from each other isolation chamber, and the thermal dissipation member is thermally coupled to the plurality of lithium-ion cells so as to dissipate thermal energy from one of the plurality of lithium-ion cells to the housing and at least another of the plurality of lithium-ion cells, through the thermal dissipation member.

Apparatus and method for lithium-ion cells

A system includes a cell support having a first opening defined therethrough. The first opening is configured to have a first battery cell positioned at least partially therein. The system also includes a first insulator positioned at least partially within the first opening and at least partially around the first battery cell. The first insulator comprises a first solid diamond-like carbon insert that fills a first gap between the first battery cell and the first opening.

System and method for maintaining thermal control of battery cells

A system includes a cell support and an insulator. The cell support has an opening defined therethrough. The opening is configured to have a battery cell positioned at least partially therein. The insulator is positioned at least partially within the opening. The insulator is configured to be positioned between the battery cell and the cell support such that the insulator electrically-insulates the cell support from the battery cell.

An apparatus including a plurality of lithium-ion cells, a cell support structure having a plurality of chambers, each of the plurality of chambers has at least one open end and is configured to support a respective lithium-ion cell, a housing in which the cell support structure is received, and a thermal dissipation member disposed between the cell support and the housing, wherein the plurality of lithium-ion cells are thermally coupled to the thermal dissipation member through a respective open end of a respective chamber, and the thermal dissipation member is thermally coupled to the housing.

A system includes a battery cell and a graphene layer positioned on an outer surface of the battery cell. If the battery cell experiences a thermal runaway event, the graphene layer may help to direct any rupturing of the battery cell in a direction that may prevent the thermal runaway event from propagating to neighboring battery cells.
