Bearing assemblies for use in low-temperature conditions are provided. The bearing assemblies include polycrystalline diamond bearing elements having diamond bearing surfaces and opposing bearing elements having metal bearing surfaces. The metal bearing surfaces include a metal that contains at least 2 weight percent of a diamond solvent-catalyst based on a total weight of the metal. The metal is ductile at temperatures ranging from −150° C. to −253° C. The metal bearing surface is in sliding contact with the diamond bearing surface.

Polycrystalline diamond-on-metal bearings for use in cryogenic conditions

A radial bearing assembly is provided. The radial bearing assembly includes polycrystalline diamond elements, each having an engagement surface in sliding engagement with an opposing engagement surface. The opposing engagement surface includes a diamond reactive material. The radial bearing assembly may be deployed in a variety of components and applications, including in rotor and stator assemblies. Also provided are methods of use of the radial bearing assembly, as well as methods of designing the radial bearing assembly.

A downhole tool for use in a downhole drill string is provided. The downhole tool includes a rotor movably coupled within a stator, and a drive shaft movably coupled within a bearing housing. The drive shaft has a first end coupled with the rotor and a second end coupled with a drill bit. Bearing assemblies interfaces engagement between the drive shaft and the bearing housing, including polycrystalline diamond elements, each with an engagement surface, and an opposing engagement surface of a non-superhard metal.

Drivelines have double conical bearing joints incorporated therein. The double conical bearing joints provide the drivelines with multiple degrees of freedom and allow the driveline to bear load in any direction. The conical bearing joints of the driveline include polycrystalline diamond bearing surfaces.

Bearings and valves are provided that include diamond engagement surfaces that are engaged with opposing, metal engagement surfaces that include diamond solvent-catalyst. Also provided are methods of making and using the bearings and valves.

A roller ball assembly is provided. The assembly includes a primary roller ball supported by a support element that is composed of a superhard material. The assembly includes a cup defining a cavity within which the support element is positioned. A cap is coupled with the cup and positioned to retain the primary roller ball within the cavity. Also, a cup is disclosed for supporting roller halls. Additionally, disclosed are system and apparatus incorporating the assembly, as well as to methods of making and using the same.

Bearings assemblies are provided that include polycrystalline diamond bearing surfaces that are engaged with opposing, metal bearing surfaces that include more than trace amounts of diamond solvent-catalyst. In the bearings, the opposing bearing surface is slidingly engaged with the polycrystalline diamond bearing surface along a diamond contact area of the polycrystalline diamond bearing surface, and the polycrystalline diamond bearing surface is a continuous surface along the diamond contact area. Also provided are methods of making and using the bearing assemblies.

Directional drilling is an extremely important area of technology for the extraction of oil and gas from earthen formations. The technology of the present application relates to improved non-stabilizer guidance positioning members for directional drilling assemblies and for drill strings. It also relates to an improved method for analyzing the fit and engagement of a directional drilling assembly in curved and straight wellbores in order to produce improved guidance positioning members. It also relates to a method of designing guidance positioning members for directional drilling. It also relates to drilling directional wellbores using the guidance positioning members of the present technology.

Articulable joints having diamond bearing surfaces engaged with metal bearing surfaces are provided herein. The articulable joints provide multiple degrees of freedom to components, such as drivelines, and bear loads in multiple directions. The articulable joints include diamond bearing surfaces slidingly engaged with opposing metal bearing surfaces that include more than trace amounts of diamond solvent-catalyst.

A threaded installation is provided. The threaded installation includes a nut, a bolt, and a housing. The housing includes a threaded hole. A first threaded connection is formed where the bolt is threadably coupled with the nut, and a second threaded connection is formed where the bolt is threadably coupled with the threaded hole. Methods and apparatus for providing compliance in bearings of rotating machinery are provided. The rotating machinery may include a drive shaft movably coupled within a bearing housing. Compliant bearing assemblies may interface engagement between the drive shaft and the bearing housing, including polycrystalline diamond bearing elements, each with an engagement surface, and an opposing engagement surface of a metal that contains diamond solvent-catalyst.

A cam follower is provided. The cam follower includes a polycrystalline diamond element, including an engagement surface. The engagement surface of the polycrystalline diamond element is positioned on the cam follower for sliding engagement with an opposing engagement surface of a cam. The cam includes at least some of a diamond reactive material.
