In one implementation, a shifter assembly for a vehicle transmission, may include a shifter adapted to move between at least two positions corresponding to different modes of operation of the transmission, a cable connection feature associated with the shifter, and a cable connected to the cable connection feature and adapted to be connected to the transmission such that movement of the shifter is transmitted to the transmission by the cable. The cable may include a conduit, a core received within the conduit, and a dampener connected to the conduit. The dampener in the preferred embodiment bends the conduit and engages the core with the conduit.

A cable assembly includes a mount and an anchor. The mount may include a bracket having an edge, a slot formed in the bracket and extending from the edge, and a recess extending at least partially around the slot. The anchor may be an end fitting that includes an adjuster body having a flange, a slide collar movable toward and away from the flange, and a spring member biasing the slide collar toward the flange. The adjuster body may extend through the slot with the flange and the slide collar on opposed sides. The spring member may bias the slide collar into the recess to form an interlock between the end fitting and the bracket that resists removal of the end fitting from the slot. A preferred end fitting has a drop in swivel tube and an internal isolator that completely isolates a conduit sleeve.

Cable assembly

A motion transmitting cable assembly includes a cable having a conduit and a core longitudinally movable within the conduit, a core attachment secured to an end of the core, and a conduit abutment fitting secured to an end of the conduit. The core attachment is molded of plastic and is over-molded onto the end of the core. The core is preferably provided with both an upset and a wire wrap within the core attachment. The core attachment includes a terminal and a rod extending from the terminal and is molded as a unitary component. A guide tube extends from the conduit abutment fitting and slidably receives the rod therein. The core meets the core attachment within the guide tube and preferably extends within the rod for the entire length of the rod and a portion of the terminal.

Plastic core attachment for a push-pull cable assembly

A cable assembly includes a cable having a conduit and a core longitudinally movable within the conduit, a core attachment secured to an end of the core, a conduit abutment fitting secured to an end of the conduit, and a guide tube extending from the conduit abutment fitting and slidably receiving the core attachment therein. The guide tube includes a main member secured to the conduit abutment fitting and an extension member longitudinally extending from the main portion such that the core attachment is slidably received in both the main portion and the extension portion. An end of the core attachment is located within the guide tube over an entire stroke of the core attachment. The extension member is longitudinally separable from the main member to expose the end of the core attachment during assembly so that the end of the core attachment can be secured to the core.

A fitting for a terminal connection in a core-adjuster assembly has a generally annular isolator with a generally central bore defining a connector pin socket and a reverse clip cap socket, and a reverse clip cap configured to be received substantially concentrically by the reverse clip cap socket of the isolator and defining a connector pin end socket.

A cable assembly may include a cable, a connector and a retainer coupled to the connector. The connector may be carried by the cable and include a reduced diameter portion and a head extending from the reduced diameter portion with at least a portion that is larger than the reduced diameter portion. The retainer may be coupled to the connector and include a body with a cavity and a tip that defines an opening leading to the cavity. In assembly, the head is received within the cavity with the reduced diameter portion extending out of the cavity and into the opening. The opening is noncircular and has a minimum diameter that is smaller than at least the largest diameter portion of the head so that at least a portion of the tip radially overlaps the largest diameter portion of the head to retain the head within the cavity.

A modular core adjuster for a cable assembly includes an adjuster body and a slider body arrangeable with the adjuster body to accommodate the cable in more than one configuration. The modular core adjuster includes a multi-piece adjuster body having a first body portion and a second separate body portion configured to be combined to define the adjuster body. A slider body is supported by the adjuster body for movement relative to the adjuster body wherein the slider body is arrangeable with the adjuster body to accommodate the cable in more than one configuration. A lock cavity is formed through an outer peripheral surface of the first and second body portions and a lock member is disposed in the lock cavity and is movable from a shipping position to a locked position.

A method of manufacturing is disclosed for a motion transmitting cable assembly having a conduit and a core longitudinally movable within the conduit. The method includes the steps of securing a conduit abutment fitting to an end of the conduit, inserting the core through the conduit, placing an end of the core into a mold while the core is extending through the conduit, injection over-molding a core attachment onto the end of the core, removing the core attachment from the mold. Finally, at least a portion of a guide tube over the juncture of the core and the core attachment.

Method of manufacture for a push-pull cable assembly

A core adjuster assembly includes an adjuster body having a pin engagement end and a locking end. The adjuster body has a central longitudinal bore and a lock cavity formed through an outer peripheral surface. A slider body is formed on an end of a rod and is disposed in the central longitudinal bore of the adjuster body. A primary lock member is disposed in the lock cavity and is moveable from a shipping position to a locked position. A secondary lock member is associated with the adjuster body and the primary lock member and is adapted to maintain the primary lock member in the shipping and locked positions.

An integrated operator cable-connector and base housing for an automotive shifter mechanism includes a generally cylindrical opening in the base housing, an isolator installed onto one end of a steel sleeve compressed against one or more shoulders in the opening and held therein with a cap snap fitted to a protrusion on the base housing. A swivel tube has a head portion captured between facing partially spherical seats formed on an end of the isolator and an interior portion of the base housing respectively, and a rod laterally supported and slidable therein. The operator cable has its case crimped into a protruding end of the sleeve and its core wire passed through a plastic tubular insert in the sleeve, an opening in the end of the isolator, and the inside of the swivel tube to a rod to which it is attached to the rod slidable in the swivel tube.

Novel terminal connectors or fittings and terminal connector assemblies using such novel terminal connectors are disclosed. The terminal connector assemblies have uses which include, for example, on load- or motion-transmitting cable assemblies, e.g., for aircraft, automotive, and marine vehicle applications. Certain exemplary embodiments of the terminal connectors and terminal connector assemblies have features that, either alone or in combination, provide desirable characteristics such as, e.g., reduced lash or vibration in such cable assemblies. Such features include, but are not limited to groove(s) disposed in an arm of the fitting, tab member(s) extending from an arm of the terminal connector, projection(s) positioned on an arm of the fitting, etc.

A lift and secure latch assembly for a vehicle tailgate includes a pair of cables capable of applying upward force to the tailgate and a tensioning mechanism positioned within the tailgate and connected to the support members to apply tension thereto. One of the cables extends from a first lateral end of the tailgate and the other of the cables extends from a second lateral end of the tailgate. The tensioning mechanism is operable between a first position wherein the cables are retracted with the tailgate closed and a second position wherein the cables are extended with the tailgate open. The tensioning mechanism includes a spring member biasing the tensioning mechanism toward the first position. A latch selectively engages the tensioning mechanism to releasably secure the tensioning mechanism in the first position with the tailgate closed. Preferably, the latch is centrally positioned between lateral ends of the tailgate.

A conduit end fitting includes a length of conduit having a core wire extending therethrough and a fitting at an end of the length of conduit. An abutment is rotatably secured to the fitting and has an exterior groove configured to be seated on a substantially U-shaped bracket and a central aperture extending therethrough. A swivel guide tube has an aperture through which the core wire extends and extends through the central aperture of the abutment. A flexible joint member secures one end of the swivel guide tube to the abutment such that the swivel guide tube is rotationally fixed with respect to the abutment.
