A surgical instrument includes a housing having a shaft extending distally therefrom, an end effector assembly disposed at a distal end of the shaft, a handle assembly coupled to the housing for manipulating the end effector assembly, a deployable assembly, at least one actuator for deploying and retracting the deployable assembly, and a closure member. The closure member is keyed to the actuator(s) and operably positioned relative to the movable handle of the handle assembly such that, upon rotation of the actuator(s) relative to the housing from an un-actuated position to an actuated position, the closure member is urged into contact with the movable handle to urge the movable handle from an initial position to a compressed position, thereby moving the end effector assembly to an approximated position.

Gear assembly for surgical instruments

A latch assembly for use with a cabinet that includes a cabinet body having a cabinet face and a moving component that moves relative to the cabinet face, includes an attachment assembly and a locking assembly. The attachment assembly is selectively coupled to the cabinet face. The attachment assembly includes an attacher body having a first arm that provides pressure on a back of the cabinet face, and a second arm that provides pressure on a front of the cabinet face when the attachment assembly is coupled to the cabinet face. The second arm is flexibly coupled to the first arm. The locking assembly is coupled to the attachment assembly. The locking assembly is selectively movable between a locked position, when the moving component is inhibited from moving relative to the cabinet face, and an unlocked position, when the moving component can be freely moved relative to the cabinet face.

A surgical instrument includes a housing, first, second, and third actuators operably coupled to the housing, an at least partially semi-rigid shaft extending distally from the housing, an end effector assembly disposed at a distal end of the shaft, and first, second, and third bars extending through the shaft in non-coaxial arrangement. The first bar is operably coupled between the first actuator and the end effector assembly such that actuation thereof effects manipulation of the end effector assembly. The second bar is operably coupled between the second actuator and a first deployable component such that actuation thereof effects deployment of the first deployable component relative to the end effector assembly. The third bar is operably coupled between the third actuator and a second deployable component such that actuation thereof effects deployment of the second deployable component relative to the end effector assembly.

Surgical instrument having a bipolar end effector assembly and a deployable monopolar assembly

A deployment and retraction mechanism for a surgical instrument includes a gear box defining a longitudinal slot, a slider, a ring gear, and a planet gear. The slider is configured to engage a deployable component of the surgical instrument and is translatable along the longitudinal slot between a proximal end, corresponding to a storage condition of the deployable component, and a distal end, corresponding to a use condition of the deployable component. The planet gear is operably engaged with the ring gear and configured to orbit within the ring gear. The planet gear includes an off-center pin rotatably supporting the slider thereon. The planet gear and ring gear are configured such that a one-half orbit of the planet gear within the ring gear translates the slider from one end of the longitudinal slot to the other end of the longitudinal slot.

A surgical instrument includes a housing, a rotating assembly including a rotation wheel coupled to the housing, a shaft engaged with the rotation wheel within the housing and extending distally from the housing, an end effector assembly disposed at a distal end of the shaft, a drive assembly slidably disposed within the shaft and operably coupled to the end effector assembly for manipulating the end effector assembly, a knife assembly slidably disposed within the shaft translatable relative to the end effector assembly between a retracted position and an extended position, an elongated insulative sheath slidably disposed about the shaft, and an energizable member slidably disposed within the shaft. The instrument is configured such that rotation of the rotation wheel relative to the housing similarly rotates the shaft, end effector assembly, drive assembly, knife assembly, elongated insulative sheath, and energizable member relative to the housing.

A deployment and retraction mechanism for deploying and retracting a deployable component of a surgical instrument includes a gear assembly, a slider, and one or more actuators. The slider is translatable between a proximal position, corresponding to a storage condition of the deployable component, and a distal position, corresponding to a use condition of the deployable component. The actuator(s) is coupled to the gear assembly and is movable from an un-actuated position to an actuated position. The gear assembly is configured such that a full actuation and subsequent release of the actuator(s) translates the slider from one of the proximal or distal positions to the other of the proximal or distal positions while a partial actuation and subsequent release of the actuator(s) translates the slider from one of the proximal or distal positions to an intermediate position and back to the one of the proximal or distal positions.

A latch assembly () for use with a cabinet () that includes a cabinet body () and a moving component (C), comprises a transverse member () and a pivoting member (). The transverse member () is selectively coupled to the cabinet body (). The pivoting member () is pivotally secured to the transverse member (). The pivoting member () pivots relative to the transverse member () between a first position in which the pivoting member () inhibits large scale movement of the moving component (C) relative to the cabinet body (), and a second position in which the pivoting member () allows for large scale movement of the moving component (C) relative to the cabinet body (). Additionally, a portion of the pivoting member () can selectively engage a portion of the transverse member () to selectively inhibit the pivoting member () from pivoting relative to the transverse member () and to selectively inhibit large scale movement of the moving component (C) relative to the cabinet body ().

The present invention provides loading and unloading mechanisms, and data drives for data storage cartridges. Embodiments of the cartridge loading and unloading mechanisms for a data storage cartridge may: operate in a manner such that the drive door of the data drive may be fully closed before the disk medium is exposed, e.g., before opening of the associated shutter of the cartridge; be powered by the same drive motor assembly that is used to move or transport the cartridge to the optical head assembly used for writing and/or reading of data from the disk medium of the cartridge; and may fit within a standard configuration for a data drive. Embodiments of the cartridge loading and unloading mechanisms, as well as the data drives, may provide reliable operation, ease of assembly, and of the parts and components necessary for the reliable operation, and positive data cartridge positioning, as well as minimizing backlash in the drive motor/gear assembly.

Loading and unloading mechanism for data storage cartridge and data drive

The present invention provides loading and unloading mechanisms for data storage cartridges, drive door mechanisms for data drives, and data drives comprising such loading and unloading and/or drive door mechanisms. Embodiments of the cartridge loading and unloading mechanisms, drive door mechanisms and/or data drives, of the present invention can operate in a manner such that the drive door of the data drive is fully closed before the disk medium is exposed, e.g., before opening of the associated shutter of the cartridge. An embodiment of the cartridge loading and unloading mechanism of the present invention can be powered by the same drive motor assembly that is used to move or transport the cartridge to the optical head assembly used for writing and/or reading of data from the disk medium of the cartridge. Embodiments of the cartridge loading and unloading mechanisms and drive door mechanisms of the present invention can fit within a standard configuration for a data drive. Embodiments of the cartridge loading and unloading mechanisms, drive door mechanisms and/or data drives of the present invention can provide for reliable operation, ease of assembly, as well as simplification of the parts and components necessary for the reliable operation of the loading and unloading mechanism, drive door mechanism and/or data drive.

The cartridge may include a housing having a top, a bottom, a front side, a back side, a first lateral side, and a second lateral side, said housing having a first media access aperture on the top of the housing; and a data storage medium contained within the housing, the data storage medium including a disk with a top and a bottom; wherein the front side of the housing contains a first segment of reduced thickness adjacent to the first media access aperture.

A data storage cartridge and a method of opening a data storage cartridge are provided. The cartridge includes: a storage medium; a housing having at least one media access aperture, the storage medium being provided within the housing such that at least one media access aperture exposes a surface of the storage medium; and a shutter assembly movable from a closed position to an open position. The shutter assembly includes: a cover configured to cover at least one media access aperture when the shutter assembly is in the closed position and to expose at least one media access aperture when the shutter assembly is in the open position; and a shutter cam coupled to the cover, said shutter cam including a lock assembly and a cam portion. The method includes unlocking a lock in the shutter assembly using a shutter opener; and sliding the shutter assembly into an open position using the shutter opener.

A data drive and a method of operating a data drive are provided. The data drive includes a drive base; a data transfer mechanism coupled to the drive base; a carriage assembly for receiving a cartridge containing a data storage medium; and a carriage assembly actuator coupled to the drive base for translating the carriage assembly to expose a plurality of radial positions of the data storage medium to the data transfer mechanism. The method includes receiving a data storage cartridge containing a rotatable data storage medium into a carriage assembly; translating the carriage assembly across a data transfer mechanism; and reading data from the data storage medium using the data transfer mechanism as the carriage assembly is being translated across the data transfer mechanism.

A flexible multi-channel trace interconnect array has a head end for electrically connecting write and read trace pairs respectively to write and read elements of a data transducer head, a body formed of a flexible dielectric material and carrying the write and read trace pairs, and at least one circuit end for connecting the write and read trace pairs respectively to write driver and read preamplifier circuits of a data storage device. Each trace pair includes two trace conductors each having a trace width, and an inter-conductor separation space. Adjacent trace pairs are separated by an inter-pair space having a width greater than, and preferably two to twenty times greater than the inter-conductor separation space in order to decouple adjacent channel pairs.

Methods and apparatus for reducing electrostatic discharge damage to a read/write (R/W) head attached to a shutter/head assembly are disclosed. In accordance with one aspect of the present invention, a shutter/head assembly includes a lead screw, a head housing, and a shutter. The head assembly is configured to be coupled to a R/W head, and is rotatably coupled with the lead screw. The shutter is also rotatably coupled to the lead screw, but in such a manner that the shutter is able to rotate independently of the head housing. The shutter is also configured in such a manner so that it rotates to a radial position between the R/W head and the tape/leader ribbon when the lead screw brings the shutter toward a certain linear position, and rotates to another radial position away from the R/W head and the tape/leader ribbon when the lead screw brings the shutter toward a different linear position.
