Integrated voice and data services are provided that utilize wired cordless access with unlicensed/unregulated connectivity sources. A digital cordless telephone operates over unlicensed/unregulated spectrum in conjunction with one or more wireless access points (WAPs) that are installed in homes, businesses, entertainment venues, and the like. The WAPs are connected to a communications service provider's broadband packet data network. A user may use the device when they are in range of another wireless access point in a public or private building that also is connected to their communications service provider's broadband packet data network.

A system for supporting a notification capability for a plurality of applications utilizing a next generation network having a network layer includes an application services middleware between the applications and the network layer comprising a plurality of common infrastructure elements usable by the applications. The plurality of common infrastructure elements includes a notification service that is configured to facilitate the sending of messages from authorized services to recipients.

Incoming calls simultaneously ring the user's mobile wireless telephone and IP telephone. The user may be provided a personal voice mailbox that may be accessed from their mobile wireless telephone or from their IP telephone. A dual mode telephone operates as a digital cordless handset of a wired data network in a structure equipped with one or more wireless access points to allow voice over Internet protocol communication via the wired data network. The dual mode telecommunications device also operates as a conventional mobile wireless telephone via a licensed spectrum wireless network when the telephone is moved outside the range of a wireless access point of the user's home or business or other venue.

Support of a plurality of different applications utilizing a next generation network having a network layer is provided by an application services middle layer between the applications and the network layer that includes a plurality of common infrastructure elements usable by the different applications. The common infrastructure elements provide services associated with use of the network and services that are not associated with use of the network. The common infrastructure elements may provide a common infrastructure element to an end user such that use of the service by the end user is accessible to each of the different applications utilizing the at least one common infrastructure element. A common infrastructure element may be accessible by an end user so as to provide a common infrastructure element to the end user for the different applications. The different applications may include both third party applications and network service provider applications.

Application services infrastructure for next generation networks

A Service Control Point (SCP) has a call list associated with the main telephone number of a called party. When a calling party attempts to contact the called party by calling the main number, a Service Switching Point (SSP) or a Mobile Switching Center (MSC) fires a trigger. The trigger causes the SCP to access the call list and to cause the SSP/MSC to simultaneously ring the main (called) telephone number and at least one alternative telephone number associated with the main telephone number. A simultaneous ring service subscriber can remotely access the SCP to modify a call list, to add or delete a call list and to select an active call list. When a subscriber has multiple call lists, the subscriber can set account parameters to automatically select the active call list, based on various call factors, such as call time and calling party.
