Methods and systems are provided for merging recirculated exhaust gas (EGR) with fresh intake air in an intake passage. In one example, a method may include introducing EGR to the intake passage via an angled annular slot and flowing unmixed EGR and ambient air through an intake compressor inlet. Ambient air may flow to a center of the intake compressor while the EGR may flow along a periphery of the intake compressor inlet.

Methods and systems for merging EGR with intake air

In one example, the dual turbocharger system may include two variable geometry turbines (VGTs), with each turbine being of the same size and operating in parallel, and with each compressor of the turbocharger operating in series, the first compressor of the first turbocharger being larger than the second compressor of the second turbocharger.

Methods and systems are provided for directing the flow of recirculated exhaust gas (EGR) delivered to an EGR cooler. In one example, a method includes flowing EGR through an EGR cooler positioned in an EGR passage, the EGR cooler comprising a bypass passage, a first cooler core flow path, and a second cooler core flow path, and adjusting a valve of the EGR cooler to selectively block flow of the EGR through the bypass passage, the first cooler core flow path, and the second cooler core flow path. In this way, fouling of the EGR cooler may be reduced.

Systems and methods for a valve in a dual-core EGR cooler

Methods and systems are provided for reducing air flow to an emission control device during a fuel shut-off event. In one example, a method may include adjusting a timing of an exhaust valve and a timing of an intake valve of a cylinder during the fuel shut-off event using a common actuator. The actuator may include a planetary gear system configured to rotate a first portion of a camshaft in a first direction and a second portion of the camshaft in a second, opposite direction.

In one example, a method includes flowing intake air in a first direction through a casing to an impeller of a compressor, selectively flowing intake air from the casing through a first chamber in an opposite, second direction, the first chamber circumferentially surrounding the casing, and selectively flowing intake air in the first direction through a second chamber to the impeller, the second chamber circumferentially surrounding the first chamber. In this way, compressor surge may be mitigated without reducing compressor efficiency at higher air flow rates.

Methods and systems are provided for diagnosing a cylinder valve deactivation mechanism in an engine system having cam-actuated valves. Movement of a latch pin of the deactivation mechanism is inferred from an induction current generated by a solenoid coupled to the latch pin, and the inferred movement is used to diagnose operation of cylinder valve deactivation mechanism. The inferred movement and a profile of the induction current is also used to estimate camshaft and crankshaft timing for improved cylinder fuel delivery in the absence of a camshaft sensor.

Methods and systems are provided for exhaust heat recovery and EGR cooling via a single heat exchanger. In one example, a method may include selecting a specific mode of operation of an engine exhaust system with the heat exchanger based on engine operating conditions and an estimated fuel efficacy factor. In one example, a method includes flowing intake air through a casing to an impeller of a compressor, and during first conditions, actuating an actuator to adjust a movable sleeve surrounding the casing from a first position to a second position and flowing intake air through a second chamber to the impeller, the movable sleeve adjusted in both a radial direction and an axial direction via a single actuating motion of the actuator. In this way, compressor surge may be mitigated without reducing compressor efficiency at higher air flow rates.

Systems and methods are provided for an engine system having a split exhaust system. In one example, a system may include an engine having a plurality of cylinders, each of the plurality of cylinders including first and second exhaust ports, the first and second exhaust ports arranged in a non-alternating pattern across the plurality of cylinders and along a cylinder head, a blowdown exhaust manifold coupled to the first exhaust ports and an exhaust passage, and a scavenge exhaust manifold coupled to the second exhaust ports and an intake passage of the engine. In this way, the first and second exhaust ports may be arranged to enhance turbocharger performance characteristics.
