A drivetrain layout that includes a primary gear reduction, a continuously variable transmission (CVT), a peak torque limiting (PTL) device and a range box is provided. The primary gear reduction is operationally engaged to an output of a motor. The CVT includes a primary pulley and a secondary pulley. The primary pulley of the CVT is operationally engaged to the primary gear reduction. The primary gear reduction reduces a rotational speed of the output of the motor that is coupled to the primary pulley of the CVT. The range box is operationally engaged with the secondary pulley of the CVT. The range box is configured to coupled torque between the CVT and wheels of a vehicle. The PTL device in operational engagement between the secondary pulley of the CVT and the range box, the PTL device configured to protect the drivetrain layout from torque transients.

A smart driveline disconnect assembly having a torque coupling assembly, an actuator, at least one sensor and a controller is provided. The torque coupling assembly is configured to selectively couple torque between a transmission and a final drive assembly. The actuator is configured to activate the torque coupling assembly. The at least one sensor is used to generate sensor information. The controller is configured to control the actuator based at least in part on the sensor information. The controller is further configured to determine at least a thermal energy level associated with the torque coupling assembly based on the sensor information and at least in part control the actuator based on the determined estimated thermal energy level.

Smart driveline disconnect

A locking angle gear box is provided. The locking angle gear box includes a torque transfer assembly, a ring gear, at least one connection drive assembly and an actuator. The torque transfer assembly is configured to communicate torque between the torque transfer assembly and a pair of outputs to halfshafts. The ring gear is rotationally supported on the torque transfer assembly. The ring gear is configured to transfer torque between at least a portion of a driveline and the torque transfer assembly. The at least one connection drive assembly is configured to selectively lock rotation of the torque transfer assembly with the rotation of the ring gear to selectively couple torque between the torque transfer assembly and the ring gear. The actuator is in communication with the at least one connection drive assembly to selectively manipulate the at least one connection drive assembly.

Locking angle gear box

A shifting system is provided that includes at least one shift fork and shift collar. The at least one shift fork is axially movable on a shift rail. The at least one shift fork further has a second end with spaced side walls and a shift fork pin. The shift collar is axially movable on the shift rail between the spaced side walls of the at least one shift fork. The at least one shift collar has a shift collar pin. A biasing member is configured to bias the at least one shift collar against one of the spaced side walls of the at least one shift fork. A rotating shift drum has at least one shift guide profile that receives at least one of the shift fork pin and the shift collar pin to guide the at least one shift fork during a shift of the shifting system.

Dual cam spring-loaded shifting transmission assembly

A torque limiting clutch that includes an input member and at least two output members is provided. The input member is configured to receive torque. Each output member is in operational communication with the input member to transfer torque between the input member and each output member. Each output member is configured to slip the operational communication with the input member when a torque above a set torque limit is encountered. Further wherein the slip of the operational communication between the input member and one output member of the at least two output members is independent of the operational communication between the input member and any other output member of the at least two output members.

Torque limiting clutch

A hybrid driveline assembly that includes a mode clutch, a driving member and a mode clutch shift fork is provided. The mode clutch dog has a first portion that is selectively coupled to a rotation of a first shaft. The first shaft is coupled to receive torque from a first type of motor. The mode clutch dog further has a second portion that is coupled to a rotation of a second shaft. The second shaft is coupled to receive torque from a second different type of motor. The driving member has a first end that is selectively coupled to the mode clutch dog to selectively lock rotation of the driving member with rotation of the mode clutch dog. The driving member further includes at least one gear. The mode clutch shift fork is engaged with the mode clutch dog to selectively manipulate a position of the mode clutch dog.

Hybrid driveline assembly

A shift on the fly transmission is provided. The shift on the fly transmission includes a continuously variable transmission portion, a discrete transmission portion, at least one input shaft and a disconnect clutch. The continuously variable transmission portion is operationally coupled to receive torque from an engine. The discrete transmission portion includes a gear assembly. The at least one input shaft is operationally coupled to an output of the continuously variable transmission portion. The disconnect clutch operationally couples the at least one input shaft to the discrete transmission portion. The disconnect clutch is further configured to selectively decouple torque from the at least one input shaft to the discrete transmission portion during a range ratio shift of the discrete transmission portion.

Shift on the fly transmission

A shift-by-wire transmission system is provided. The system includes a gearbox that is configured and arranged to receive a rotational input and provide a select rotational output. The gearbox includes a plurality of gear assemblies that are operationally coupled together to provide the select rotational output from the rotational input. A shift assembly is operationally coupled to the plurality of gear assemblies of the gearbox to selectively change gearing of gearbox. An electric motor is operationally coupled to the shift assembly to activate the shift assembly to selectively change the gearing of the gearbox. A manual shift override is employed that is coupled between the shift assembly and the electric motor. The manual shift override is configured and arranged to manually disconnect the electric motor from the shift assembly and activate the shift assembly.

Shift-by-wire transmission

A method of controlling a shift-by-wire transmission is provided. The method monitors a setting of a shift assembly that sets a select gear from gearing of the transmission. A motor is activated to adjust the setting of the shift assembly when the monitoring of the shift assembly indicates that the then current setting of the shift assembly is outside of a course window of a desired gear. The course adjustment window is centered about a nominal target position for the desired gear while being within an acceptable range of the select gear. The motor is shut off when the monitoring of the setting of the shift assembly indicates the setting is within a fine adjustment window of the desired gear. The fine adjustment window is also centered about the nominal target position for the desired gear. The fine adjustment window is narrower than the course adjustment window.

Method and apparatus for controlling a shift-by-wire transmission

A brake system () includes a differential carrier () and output gear () operatively connected. At least one carrier rotary friction surface () is operatively connected to the differential carrier (). At least one side gear rotary friction surface () is operatively connected to one of the side gears (). At least one limited rotary friction surface is operatively connected to the case, whereby during a braking operation the carrier rotary friction surface and the side gear rotary friction surface are pressed together causing braking of the differential carrier and the first and second differential side gears (). The carrier () is supported by the first and second differential side gears ().

Wet brake system for vehicles

A differential () includes a clutch pack that is activated by rotational movement of a ball ramp () that results in a linear force applied to the reaction plates () and friction plates (). The ball ramp () is controlled by a DC motor () that has a high efficiency of a gear train to allow the use of the DC motor to control the activation of the clutch pack.
