A device is for separating water and contaminants from fuel that is being supplied from an upstream fuel reservoir to a downstream internal combustion engine. The device comprises a housing configured to couple with the upstream fuel reservoir, the housing having an inlet receiving fuel, water and contaminants, and an outlet discharging the fuel; a gravity separator disposed in the housing between the inlet and the outlet, the gravity separator separating the water from the fuel; and a filter disposed in the housing between the inlet and the outlet, the filter filtering the contaminants from the fuel.

A corrosion inhibiting system is provided with the ability to allow both primary and secondary portions of the circuit to be used in the alternative without having the primary and secondary systems interfere with each other by operating at the same time. By incorporating a continuity controller, such as a switch or a diode to selectively disconnect the sacrificial anode from the circuit, the primary and secondary systems can both be provided on a marine vessel, but used independently from each other. In that way, the primary and secondary corrosion inhibiting systems are prevented from interfering with each other during normal operation.

A shift assist mechanism is provided with a position identification device that incorporates one or more probes in association with one or more depressions that identify alignment between various positions on the piston and cylinder of the shift assist mechanism. Electrical conductivity or non-conductivity of three electrical conductors identifies the relative axial positions of these components. In addition, the electrical conductors of the system allow the detection of water within the lubricating oil of the transmission.

Position sensor for a gear shift assist mechanism in a marine propulsion device

A marine propulsion system is provided with inner and outer bellows, or tubes, which are rigidly attached to both the transom bracket and the driveshaft housing of the sterndrive system. Neither the inner nor outer tubes rotate with the driveshaft. Both the inner and outer tubes, or bellows, allow the driveshaft to rotate relative to the transom bracket about either a steering axis or trim axis. An exhaust passage is defined between the outer surface of the inner tube and the inner surface of the outer tube. This structure provides an efficient positioning of the two tubes while protecting the universal joint within the inner tube from the exhaust gases. Encompassing the inner tube within the outer tube increases the possible area that can be used for the exhaust passage in comparison to providing two individual tubes, one for the universal joint and the other as an exhaust passage.

A remote control manually movable handle for a gear selection and throttle selection device is provided with asymmetry in order to improve the mechanical advantage available to the operator when moving the selection handle from neutral gear position to forward or reverse gear position. The total neutral zone is increased in order to provide this improved mechanical advantage while maintaining the generally similar range of travel of the forward gear zone in comparison to known prior art systems. By changing the relative gear teeth arrangements of the remote control system, this asymmetry and resulting mechanical advantage is achieved. A handle shape is provided that results in a general perpendicularity between the handle and a reference line in order to improve the feel of the handle when used by the operator of the marine vessel.
