The current application discloses compositions and methods for treating a subterranean formation. CO2 swellable elastomers can be used in a treatment fluid to at least partially block a high permeability region, therefore improving the performance of an operation such as matrix stimulation, acidizing, and acid fracturing.

Swellable elastomer and its use in acidizing or matrix stimulation

This invention relates to compositions and methods for treating subterranean formations, in particular, oilfield stimulation compositions and methods using water-in-water polymer emulsions to uniformly dissolve a rheologically active polymer, such as a thickener or friction reducer, in the treatment fluid. The emulsions have a low viscosity and are easily pumped for mixing into a treatment fluid, where upon dilution with an aqueous medium, the polymer is easily hydrated without forming fish-eyes. The partitioning agent in the water-in-water emulsion does not generally affect the rheology of the treatment fluid. The invention also relates to further processing of the emulsion by wet grinding, high shear mixing and/or heating to enhance the hydration rate in the preparation of the well treatment fluid.

Polymer delivery in well treatment applications

A wellbore treatment fluid is formed from an aqueous medium, a gas component, a viscosifying agent, and a surfactant. The surfactant is represented by the chemical formula:[R&#x2014;(OCHCH)&#x2014;O&#x2014;YO]Xwherein R is a linear alkyl, branched alkyl, alkyl cycloaliphatic, or alkyl aryl group; O is an oxygen atom; Y is either a sulfur or phosphorus atom; m is 1 or more; n is a integer ranging from 1 to 3; p is a integer ranging from 1 to 4; q is a integer ranging from 0 to 1; and X is a cation. The fluid may be used in treating a subterranean formation penetrating by a wellbore by introducing the fluid into the wellbore. The fluid may be used in fracturing a subterranean formation penetrated by a wellbore by introducing the fluid into the formation at a pressure equal to or greater than the fracture initiation pressure.

Foaming agent for subterranean formations treatment, and methods of use thereof

A thickened aqueous composition is delivered to a subterranean location accessible via a wellbore by steps of i. providing a biphasic aqueous mixture comprising two aqueous solutions which, at surface temperature and pressure, are able to co-exist as separate aqueous phases in contact with each other, ii. pumping said biphasic aqueous system down the wellbore to the subterranean location, and iii. converting the biphasic mixture below ground so that its phases combine into a single aqueous phase which is more viscous than the biphasic mixture. The two phases of the aqueous biphasic mixture contain dissolved solutes which segregate between the two phases such that at least one first solute is present at a greater concentration in the first aqueous phase than in the second aqueous phase while at least one second solute is present at a greater concentration in the second aqueous phase than in the first aqueous phase. The solute in the first phase may be a thickening polymer or other thickening material such as viscoelastic surfactant. The solute in the second phase may be a different polymer, surfactant or salt. Conversion to a single phase may be carried out in various ways including dilution, change in pH, change in salinity, increase in temperature and adsorption of one solute onto formation rock.

Provision of viscous compositions below ground

A method of treating a subterranean formation penetrated by a wellbore to mitigate the production of unwanted fluids from the wellbore is carried out by forming a treatment fluid containing at least one of an oil-wetting or water-repelling surfactant and a carrier fluid. The treatment fluid is then introduced into the wellbore. The treatment or treatments may be performed remedially or prophylacticaly. The treatment may include the completion and production of zones containing the undesirable fluid(s) and the deliberate formation of cones therein.

Methods for manipulation of the flow of fluids in subterranean formations

The invention discloses a method of delivering a first chemical component to a subterranean formation in a wellbore comprising: providing a fluid comprising a carrier fluid and at least two different sizes of solid particulate materials selected from a group consisting of: very large particles, large particles, medium particles, fine particles, very fine particles and ultrafine particles; wherein the packed volume fraction (PVF) of the two sizes of solid particulate materials exceeds 0.80, and wherein first type of solid particulate materials contains the first chemical component able to be released by a first downhole trigger and second type of solid particulate materials contains the first chemical component or a second chemical component able to be released by a second downhole trigger; pumping the fluid into the wellbore; allowing the first chemical component to be released by the first downhole trigger.

Method for treatment of a well using high solid content fluid delivery

A method of plugging a fracture in a subterranean formation which includes placing into the fracture a composition comprising microspheres or microbeads, wherein the microspheres are created by surface crosslinking of droplets in a water-in-water emulsion. Such microspheres may form a filter cake in the formation. The microspheres may include a chemical agent to be released when the microspheres dissolve.

Polymeric microspheres as degradable fluid loss additives in oilfield applications

A method of treating a shale-containing subterranean formation penetrated by a wellbore is accomplished by forming a carbon dioxide treatment fluid having a viscosity of less than about 10 mPa-s at a shear rate of about 100 s. The carbon dioxide treatment fluid is introduced into the formation through the wellbore at a pressure above the fracture pressure of the formation. In certain embodiments, the treatment fluid may be comprised of from about 90% to 100% by weight carbon dioxide and may contain a proppant. A method of treating hydrocarbon-bearing, shale-containing subterranean formation penetrated by a wellbore may also be carried out by forming a carbon dioxide treatment fluid and introducing the carbon dioxide treatment fluid into the formation through the wellbore at a pressure above the fracture pressure of the formation. The formation being treated may have a permeability of less than 1 mD.

Use of carbon-dioxide-based fracturing fluids

A low viscosity wellbore polymer fluid gelling system comprising an aqueous medium and a water-in-water emulsion comprising a plurality of polymers or oligomers, including at least one removable polymer or oligomer, and at least one gelling polymer or oligomer, wherein said fluid has a low viscosity when injected, and the gelling polymer forms a gel downhole which has a storage modulus of at least about 60 Pa after the removable polymer is removed from the fluid. A method of isolating at least one zone of a subterranean formation penetrated by a wellbore includes the steps of preparing a water-in-water emulsion comprising a plurality of polymers or oligomers including at least one removable polymer or oligomer, and at least one gellable polymer or oligomer; and combining the water-in-water emulsion with an aqueous medium to prepare a low viscosity polymer fluid.

In one embodiment, a system includes a cased wellbore disposed in a formation of interest. The system includes an emulsion positioned in the wellbore at a depth of the formation of interest. The emulsion includes an oil external phase and an aqueous internal phase. The oil external phase includes particles having calcium hydroxide. The aqueous internal phase includes insoluble silica particles. The system further includes a perforating tool that generates perforation tunnels through the cased wellbore into the formation of interest. The system further includes a well flow control device that shuts in the wellbore for a specified period of time. The emulsion breaks during contact with the formation in the perforation tunnels, and the calcium hydroxide and silica particles form a cementitious material that consolidates the perforation tunnels.

Delayed breakers are given that break viscoelastic surfactant fluids inside the pores of formations into which the fluids have been injected. The breakers comprise proteins, proteins that contain breakers, or cells that contain breakers. Proteins become breakers, and proteins and cells release breakers, due to a triggering mechanism that may be, for example, a change in temperature, pH, or salinity.
