An example method includes storing status data for a network communication device connected to a host device by a pluggable connector in a memory of the network communication device. A change in the status data is signaled using a signal on the pluggable connector. The status data is sent from the memory of the network communication device to the host device over the pluggable connector. The status data is displayed on a local indicator of the host device.

A method may include transmitting an open contention-based grant to optical network units (ONUs) and receiving, from at least one of the ONUs, a response to the open contention-based grant. The method may also include determining whether a collision has occurred in response to the open contention-based grant. The method may further include provisioning grants to ONUs in response to determine that a collision has occurred.

Systems and methods of open contention-based grant allocations

An optical device may include a communication interface and processing logic configured to receive a broadcast contention-based allocation from an optical line terminal (OLT), wherein the contention-based allocation is associated with activation of the optical device in an optical network. The processing logic may also be configured to transmit a message in response to the contention-based allocation, wherein the message includes information identifying the optical device and receive, from the OLT, an assignment message or a feedback message in response to the transmitted message. The processing logic may be further configured to execute a retransmission procedure based on the assignment or feedback message indicating that a collision occurred.

A method may include determining a number of categories associated with optical network units (ONUs) in a system and assigning an allocation identifier to each of the respective categories. The method may also include transmitting the assigned allocation identifiers to the ONUs and transmitting a contention-based allocation to the ONUs, wherein the contention-based allocation includes a first one of the allocation identifiers.

Dynamic assignment of broadcast allocation identifiers

A patch panel that provides a more flexible test bed for copper based broadband services using male or female pin-type connectors (commonly referred to as 'telco' or 'champ' connectors) that meets ANSI/T1A/E1A-568-B.2 standards is disclosed. The connectors, depending upon whether they are male or female, have a pin or receptacle, respectively, for each conductor that comprises the pairs of a Cat5e compliant cable assembly. The patch panel provides a &#x201c;cleaner&#x201d; installation in systems requiring Cat5e compliance as cables are routed to a centralized point (the patch panel) for distribution to and from communications devices and network elements.

Uninterrupted digital communications are provided between a central office and a customer premises by using a high-pass or bandpass filter to bypass local loop generation equipment. In many present-day telecommunications installations, local loop generation equipment may be placed in series with a communications path that runs between the central office and the customer premises. This communications path is adapted to convey digital signals as well as voice information and/or other types of baseband communications signals. In order to avoid interference between baseband signals and digital signals, each of these signals is allowed to occupy only a specified portion of the frequency spectrum. When activated, the local loop generation equipment breaks the entire communications path, interrupting voice signals, as well as any digital signals which may be carried thereon. The techniques disclosed herein solve the problem of interrupted digital communications by bridging a frequency-selective filter across the local loop generation equipment so as to provide an alternate path for digital signals around the activated local loop generation equipment. In cases where the digital signals occupy frequencies above baseband, the frequency selective filter may be implemented using a high-pass filter and/or a bandpass filter. In this manner, a digital communications path between the central office and the customer premises is provided at all times.
