A router includes a housing and a motor assembly disposed within the housing. The motor assembly includes a driven shaft having a cavity on a first end of the driven shaft. The router includes a collet that is configured to mate into the cavity of the driven shaft with the collet being configured to grip a shank of a router bit. The router includes a gear mechanism that is configured to couple and decouple from a second end of the driven shaft such that a rotation of the gear mechanism when the gear mechanism is coupled to the second end of the driven shaft causes at least one of tightening and loosening of the collet.

A bit retaining system for a rotary tool or device such as a router is disclosed. The bit retaining system may include a collet assembly and a control assembly. The collet assembly may include a spindle, a collet adapted to receive the bit, and a collet nut. The collet assembly may further include a collet gear mounted on the collet nut and/or a spindle gear mounted on the spindle. The control assembly selectively engages the collet assembly to drive the collet nut and/or secure the spindle in a fixed position, preventing its rotation. In operation, a hand tool is utilized to engage the control assembly. This configuration enables a user to capture and release the rotary tool bit using one hand.

A lock template includes an elongated body member that defines a substantially rectangular first opening having a first length and a first width and an elongated first member. The elongated first member is configured to be removably-inserted into first end recesses of the body such that the first member is located at least partially within the first opening. The first member, when inserted in the first end recesses of the body, defines a wall of a second opening having a length substantially equal to the first length and a width smaller than the first width. The second opening is configured to guide a cutting instrument to form a mortise for a lock component in a passageway component. When the first member is inserted into the first end recesses a longitudinal central axis of the first insert member is offset from a central axis between the first end recesses of the body.
