This document relates to electricity management using modulated waveforms. One example modulates electricity to obtain modulated electricity having at least two different alternating current frequencies including a first alternating current frequency and a second alternating current frequency. The example delivers the modulated electrical power having the at least two different alternating current frequencies to multiple different electrical devices, including a first electrical device configured to utilize the first alternating current frequency and a second electrical device configured to utilize the second alternating current frequency. The modulated electricity can be delivered at least partly over an electrical line shared by the first electrical device and the second electrical device.

Electricity management using modulated waveforms

Computing devices receive power from multiple fuel cells, consuming natural gas and outputting electrical energy natively consumable by the computing devices. The fuel cells are sized to provide power to a set of computing devices, such as a rack thereof. The computing devices of a failed fuel cell can receive power from adjacent fuel cells. Additionally, the fuel cells and computing devices are positioned to realize thermal symbiotic efficiencies. Controllers instruct the computing devices to deactivate or throttle down power consuming functions during instances where the power consumption demand is increasing faster than the power being sourced by fuel cells, and instruct the computing devices to activate or throttle up power consuming functions during instances where the power consumption demand is decreasing faster than the power being sourced by the fuel cells. Supplemental power sources, supplementing the fuel cells' inability to quickly change power output, are not required.

This document relates to management of computing devices using modulated electricity. One example includes assigning a set of time slices to a computing device for drawing electricity and subsequently causing the computing device to adjust consumption of the electricity by assigning a different set of time slices to the computing device.

Management of computing devices using modulated electricity

The description relates to personal content distribution networks. One example can identify devices that are associated with a set of users and that are proximate to a location and obtain operational information about the devices. The example can establish a PCDN for the devices at the location. The PCDN can be configured to obscure identification of the devices to entities outside the PCDN and to aggregate content that may be requested by individual users among multiple individual devices.

Private content distribution network

A power supply system for a data center includes a cooling circuit, an electrochemical power generator, a sensor, and a processor. The cooling circuit includes a fluid configured to receive heat energy generated by a server located in the data center. The electrochemical power generator is configured to receive and/or generate the fluid of the cooling circuit and to generate electrical energy for the server using the fluid. The sensor is configured to obtain data regarding the server. The processor is configured to control an amount of heat energy transferred from the server to the fluid based on the data.

Power supply system and method of managing the same

This document relates to analyzing electrical grid conditions using server installations. One example obtains first grid condition signals describing first grid conditions detected by a first server installation during a first time period. The first server installation is connected to a first electrical grid and first previous grid failure events have occurred on the first electrical grid during the first time period. The example also obtains second grid condition signals describing second grid conditions detected by a second server installation during a second time period. The second server installation is connected to a second electrical grid that is geographically remote from the first electrical grid and second previous grid failure events have occurred on the second electrical grid during the second time period. The example also includes using the first grid condition signals and the second grid condition signals to predict a future grid failure event on the second electrical grid.

Server installation as a grid condition sensor

A self-powered processing device comprises both a processing device and a power generator that are physically, electrically, and thermally coupled to one another. The power generator can be a fuel cell that can be manufactured from materials that can also support processing circuitry, such as silicon-based materials. A thermal coupling between the power generator and the processing device can include a thermoelectric either generating electrical power from the temperature differential or consuming electrical power to generate a temperature differential. A computing device with self-powered processing devices also includes energy storage devices to store excess energy produced by the self-powered processing device and provide it back during times of need. The self-powered processing device comprises either a wireless or wired network connection, the latter being connectable to a slot on a backplane that can aggregate multiple self-powered processing devices and provide fuel delivery paths for them.

On-chip integrated processing and power generation

Discrete-component-level physical security is provided by the physical securing of defined hardware computing components through computer-controlled processes. Physical locking mechanisms are provided for individual components of a datacenter server chassis and are communicationally coupled to a computing device, which controls the state of the physical locking mechanisms, including in response to user identification and authentication information provided through a user input device that is also part of the server chassis. An access control list controlling physical access correlates user identities to the state of the physical locking mechanisms and other physical security devices and provides for one-time passwords and other like mechanisms. The state of physical security devices are also based on security requirements associated with processing being performed on one or more computing devices protected by such physical security devices. The server chassis can also comprise a backup power source for the physical locking mechanisms.

A bid-based network sells network capacity on a transaction-by-transaction basis in accordance with bids placed on transactions. A transaction is the transmission of a quantum of data across at least some portion of the network, where the quantum of data can be as small as a single packet. Bids for network capacity are ranked in order of monetary value, or other criteria relevant to the network service provider. The amount charged to the highest bidder is based on the maximum bid of the next highest bidder. Bids are evaluated on a real-time basis at the time when the link is ready to transmit data. An automated system makes individual bids at each link through which data is transmitted and can take into account additional criteria that can be specified as part of the bid information, including latency and routing requirements. Bid information is passed with data through the network.

Incremental valuation based network capacity allocation

A container includes first and second long sides parallel to the container's length. Racks are organized in rows parallel to the container's width. Each rack is receptive to installation of equipment along a height of the data rack parallel to the container's height. Openings are defined within the first and/or second long sides of the container. Heat exchangers may be installed, where each exchanger is installed on a rack to cool air exhausted by any equipment installed on this rack. Each row may include as many of the racks positioned side-to-side, length-wise, and parallel to the width of the container as can fit within the container. The racks of each row may be slidable in unison back and forth along the length of the container, between a first position at which the racks block an opening and a second position at which the racks block another opening.

Container-based data center having greater rack density

A computer system comprising a motherboard and a power supply having an associated power management bus controller with memory storing the power capacity of the associated power supply. A power circuit provides power from the power supply to the motherboard, wherein the motherboard has a processor and a baseboard management controller. The system further comprises a power management bus providing communication between the baseboard management controller and the power management bus controller associated with the selected power supply, wherein the power management bus controller provides the stored power capacity to the baseboard management controller. This allows the baseboard management controller to limit operation of the processor to control the amount of power consumed from exceeding the power capacity of the selected power supply. The power capacity of the power supply may be sent to the baseboard management controller in response to booting the motherboard.

System power capping using information received from the installed power supply

Data processing workload control in a data center is provided, where the data center includes computers whose operations consume power and a workload controller composed of automated computing machinery that controls the overall data processing workload in the data center. The data processing workload is composed of a plurality of specific data processing jobs, including scheduling, by the workload controller in dependence upon power performance information, the data processing jobs for execution upon the computers in the data center, the power performance information including power consumption at a plurality of power-conserving states for each computer in the data center that executes data processing jobs and dispatching by the workload controller the data processing jobs as scheduled for execution on computers in the data center.
