A method for cold start emissions diagnostic of a catalytic treatment device of an internal combustion engine includes determining a torque reserve; determining a catalyst light off (CLO) state; integrating the total torque reserve over a time period established by the CLO state; determining if a value from the integration exceeds an integration threshold; and if the value from the integration exceeds the integration threshold, indicating that the cold start emissions diagnostic is positive.

Method for cold start emissions diagnostic

An engine control system for a vehicle includes a shutdown control module that generates a command to shut down an engine of the vehicle when at least one of: a driver requests the shutdown of the engine via an ignition system; and when one or more predetermined conditions are satisfied for shutting down the engine without the driver requesting shutdown of the engine via the ignition system. A valve control module, when the command to shut down the engine is generated, advances an exhaust camshaft phaser based on a predetermined exhaust park position. When the exhaust camshaft phaser is in the predetermined exhaust park position, an exhaust valve of a cylinder is fully closed during an exhaust stroke of the cylinder before a piston of the cylinder reaches a topmost position for a next intake stroke of the cylinder.

Park positions for variable camshaft phasing systems and methods

An engine control system for an auto-stop/start vehicle includes an auto-stop/start module that generates an auto-stop command for shutting down an engine while an ignition is ON and subsequently generates an auto-start command for re-starting the engine. The system includes an actuator control module that disables an engine load, parks exhaust and intake cam phasers, disables fuel, sets a first throttle opening, monitors a crankshaft rotational position, speed, and deceleration, sets a second throttle opening for a predetermined duration if a piston simultaneously crosses a target position below a target engine speed and below a target degrees of rotation remaining, sets a third throttle opening, and determines if an engine speed is below a threshold speed before setting a fourth throttle opening when the engine speed is below the threshold speed, and causes the piston to rest in a predetermined position range.

Engine stop position control system and method

A first target module determines a first target output pressure of an engine oil pump based on a speed of the engine oil pump and an oil temperature. A second target module, based on a runtime period of an engine, sets a second target output pressure of the engine oil pump to one of greater than and equal to the first target output pressure. A third target module, based on an engine load, sets a third target output pressure of the engine oil pump to one of greater than and equal to the first target output pressure. A selection module selects one of the second and third target output pressures, sets a selected target output pressure based on the selected one of the second and third target output pressures, and controls displacement of the engine oil pump based on the selected target output pressure.

Oil pump control systems and methods

An engine control system of a vehicle includes a first temperature module, a second temperature module, and an exhaust gas recirculation (EGR) control module. The first temperature module determines a temperature of gas within an intake manifold of an engine. The second temperature module determines a temperature of an EGR conduit that is coupled to the intake manifold. The EGR control module reduces opening of an EGR valve when the temperature of the gas and the temperature of the conduit is greater than a predetermined temperature.

A control system for an engine includes a target air per cylinder (APC) module, a target area module, and a phaser scheduling module. The target APC module determines a target APC based on a target spark timing, a target intake cam phaser angle, and a target exhaust cam phaser angle. The target area module determines a target opening of a throttle valve of the engine based on the target spark timing, the target intake cam phaser angle, and the target exhaust cam phaser angle. The target area module controls the throttle valve based on the target opening. The phaser scheduling module determines the target intake and exhaust cam phaser angles based on the target APC. The phaser scheduling module controls intake and exhaust cam phasers of the engine based on the target intake and exhaust cam phaser angles, respectively.

A system according to the principles of the present disclosure includes a timing control module and a diagnostic module. The timing control module controls engine valve timing by sending fluid to an advancing chamber of a cam phaser to adjust the cam phaser to an advanced position and by sending fluid to a retarding chamber of the cam phaser to adjust the cam phaser to a retarded position. The diagnostic module identifies a fault in a variable valve lift (VVL) mechanism based on a first difference between an advancing pressure of the advancing chamber and a retarding pressure of the retarding chamber.

An exhaust control system for a vehicle comprises an exhaust system modeling module and an actuator control module. The exhaust system modeling module estimates an input gas temperature, an output gas temperature, a mass temperature, and a pressure for an exhaust system component of an exhaust system implemented in the vehicle. Exhaust gas flows through the exhaust system component. The actuator control module selectively adjusts an engine operating parameter based on at least one of the input gas temperature, the output gas temperature, the mass temperature, and the pressure.

A method and control module includes a control hold duty cycle module generating a control hold duty cycle signal and a voltage correction module generating a voltage correction signal. The control module also includes a correction module generating a corrected proportional correction signal based on a proportional correction signal and the voltage correction signal, and generating a corrected integral correction signal based on an integral correction signal and the voltage correction signal. The control module also includes a force determination module controlling a duty cycle to a phaser operator based upon the control hold signal, the corrected proportional correction signal and the corrected integral correction signal.

A control system includes a throttle control module, an exhaust gas recirculation (EGR) control module, and a diagnostic control module. The throttle control module selectively maintains a desired throttle area when a vehicle is in a coastdown mode. The EGR control module opens an EGR valve when the desired throttle area is maintained. The diagnostic control module selectively diagnoses an error of an EGR system based on a pressure increase measured in an intake manifold of the vehicle when the EGR valve is open.

A camshaft phasor control system for an engine includes a camshaft position sensor that generates a current camshaft position signal based on position of a camshaft. A first comparator generates a camshaft position signal based on the current camshaft position signal and a crankshaft position. The second comparator generates an error signal based on the relative camshaft position signal and a commanded camshaft position signal. A control module determines a current control hold duty cycle (CHDC) for a camshaft phasor based on an engine state parameter. The control module also generates a correction signal based on the error signal, adjusts the current CHDC based on the correction signal to generate a commanded CHDC signal, and generates another CHDC based on the commanded CHDC signal.

A stuck lock-pin release system for a lock-pin in a cam phaser includes a stuck lock-pin detection module and a stuck lock-pin module that communicates with the stuck lock-pin detection module. The stuck-lock pin detection module periodically determines whether a lock-pin in a cam phaser is in a stuck park condition. When the lock-pin is in the stuck park condition, the stuck lock-pin module alternately biases the cam phaser in a first and second direction until the lock-pin is no longer in the stuck park condition.

An available engine torque is determined based on the engine torque array and the at least one engine operating parameter and the engine is regulated based on the available engine torque.

Cam phaser compensation in a hybrid vehicle system

A torque control system for regulating operation of a displacement on demand engine that is operable in an activated mode and a deactivated mode includes a throttle that regulates air flow into the engine and a cam phaser that regulates a torque output of the engine. A first module determines a throttle area based on a desired deactivated manifold absolute pressure (MAP) and a desired mass air flow (MAF) and a second module determines a desired cam phaser position based on an engine speed and a transitional air per cylinder (APC) that is determined based on one of a desired deactivated APC and desired activated APC. A third module generates a throttle control signal to control the throttle based on the throttle area and a fourth module generates a cam phaser control signal to control the cam phaser based on the desired cam phaser position.

CAM phaser and DOD coordination for engine torque control

An exhaust gas recirculation (EGR) valve coil temperature is estimated non-intrusively using only existing sensors. In one embodiment an EGR valve coil temperature estimator running on a powertrain control module estimates the EGR valve coil temperature as a linear function of estimated charge temperature, inlet air temperature, coolant temperature, and vehicle speed. Coefficients of the mathematical function, which describe the degree of association between the inputs and EGR valve coil temperature, are calculated by measuring the actual EGR valve coil temperature over wide operating conditions. The powertrain control module uses the EGR valve temperature estimated in this manner to vary the drive signal to the EGR valve coil to open the EGR valve a desired amount.
