The present invention comprises a unique mounting frame for use in conjunction with a conversion kit for a conventional, combination baseball/softball pitching machine of the wheel type. Both machines are separately mounted on individual base plates that are pivotably mounted to the front of the frame. The plates are interconnected so as to move in an integral manner pivoting relative to the front of the frame. Movement is controlled by a linear actuator which permits them to be raised and lowered as a single unit by a single raise and lower mechanism.

Mounting frame for use with a kit for converting conventional pitching machine into a video pitching machine

The present invention consists of a conversion kit for converting a pitching machine of the type having at least one wheel into a video pitching machine. The kit includes: a projection screen; projector; ball injector; and control system. The projection screen, which is adapted to be positioned between the pitching machine and a batter, includes an aperture through which a ball may be delivered to the batter by the pitching machine. The video projector must be able to project the video image of an actual pitcher onto the projection screen. The injector is adapted to hold a ball in a queued position immediately behind the pitching machine and inject the ball into the pitching machine to be propelled toward the batter in synchronization with the video image. The injector includes an electric solenoid for injecting the ball into the pitching machine. The control system is for storing the video image and displaying the video image onto the screen as well as for causing the injector to inject the ball into the pitching machine in full synchronization with the video image displayed on the screen.

Kit for converting conventional pitching machine into a video pitching machine

A method is provided for profiling pitches of an actual pitcher using a programmable pitching simulator of the type having at least two wheels and a video display component. The method comprises the steps of: (a) creating pitch profile codes for all pitches that a pitcher can reasonably pitch, the pitch profile codes including information regarding pitch type, pitch speed and pitch movement; (b) developing a master pitch parameter table for each of the pitch profile codes, the pitch parameter table including all data reasonably necessary to program the programmable pitching simulator to throw profiled pitches; (c) developing pitch profile codes for a particular pitcher, the pitch profile codes also including a code for a video image to be displayed; (d) entering into the programmable pitching simulator the specific pitch profile codes for a particular pitcher by the use of a card containing the pitch profile codes; (e) and re-programming the programmable pitching simulator to deliver pitches with the same pitch profiles of the pitcher. The method can further include developing specific sequences of particular profiled pitches to a particular batter in the sequence that the pitcher has historically pitched to the batter.

Method for profiling pitches using a computerized, programmable pitching machine

The present invention consists of a conversion kit for converting a spring-actuated pitching machine of the Iron Mike type to a video pitching machine, i.e., a pitching machine that includes a video projection screen on which the video image of an actual pitcher is displayed in synchronization with the release of a ball from the pitching machine. The kit includes a projection screen; a projector; a clutch motor unit; a relay unit; and a control unit. The projection screen, which is adapted to be positioned between the pitching machine and a batter, includes an aperture through which a ball may be delivered to the batter by the conventional spring-actuated pitching machine. The video projector must be able to project the video image of an actual pitcher onto the projection screen. The clutch motor is adapted to hold a ball in a queued position within the spring-actuated pitching machine and, upon release, propel the ball toward the batter in synchronization with the video image. A control unit is provided for storing the video image and displaying the video image onto the screen as well as for causing the clutch motor to hold the ball in a queued position and, upon release, propel the ball toward the batter in full synchronization with the video image displayed on the screen.

Kit for converting conventional, spring-actuated pitching machine into a video pitching machine

A baseball is provided for repeated use with a pitching machine. The baseball has a smooth surface upon which a plurality of dimples or indentations are provided, said indentations being spaced in a regular pattern. These indentations serve to induce turbulent airflow over the surface of the baseball, thereby reducing the drag on the ball and serving to stabilize the flight of the ball. The ball further includes a plurality of slot-shaped depressions formed in a pattern similar to the stitch pattern of an actual baseball and wherein the inner surfaces of said slot-shaped depressions are colored with a dye or paint such that the rotational velocity of the baseball may be observed when the ball is in flight.

Ball for pitching machine

A ball-throwing machine is provided which may be used for throwing baseballs, softballs and the like. The machine includes a power head having at least two and preferably three coacting wheels for propelling a ball toward a batter to simulate a pitch. Three AC motors and companion motor drives are provided for causing the wheels to rotate at predetermined speeds. The motor drives include dynamic braking circuits to permit rapid deceleration of the wheels. A pair of linear actuators is provided to permit the power head to be moved to predetermined horizontal and vertical positions. A programmable controller is included for individually controlling the rotational speed of each individual wheel, the horizontal position of the power head and the vertical position of the power head. A smart card reader may be employed for programming of the controller and the machine is adapted to be used in conjunction with a video display to simulate the actual pitching of a baseball by a pitcher. The machine is able to interchangeably deliver pitches of different types to different locations at different speeds with less than ten-second intervals between pitches.

Ball throwing machine and method for profiling pitches

A pitching machine is provided for throwing balls, such as baseballs. The machine is synchronized with a video display, to permit a batter to view an image of a pitcher during a pitch. The machine includes motor-driven coacting wheels to propel the ball. The motors may include dynamic braking circuits to rapidly decelerate the wheels. A programmable controller is provided for controlling the wheel speeds and pitch direction. A smart card reader may be used for programming the controller. The machine is located behind a screen for displaying a moving video image of a pitcher, the screen having an aperture for passage of the ball.

Pitching system with video display means

A ball-throwing machine is provided for throwing baseballs, softballs and the like, which machine includes a power head having three coacting wheels for propelling a ball toward a batter to simulate a variety of pitches at different speeds and different locations. Three AC motors and companion motor drives are provided for causing the wheels to rotate at predetermined speeds. The motor drives include dynamic braking circuits to permit rapid deceleration of the wheels. A pair of linear actuators is provided to permit the power head to be moved to predetermined horizontal and vertical positions. The pitches are established by providing a table of five separate data elements for each of said pitches, three of said data elements corresponding to the rotational speed of each of said wheels, and the remaining two data elements corresponding to the horizontal and vertical angular position of the power head. Each of these data elements is computed using a mathematical formula that linearly relates each element to the speed of the ball being propelled. A programmable controller is included for individually controlling the rotational speed of each individual wheel, the horizontal position of the power head and the vertical position of the power head. A smart card reader may be employed for programming of the controller and the machine is adapted to be used in conjunction with a video display to simulate the actual pitching of a baseball by a pitcher. The machine is able to interchangeably deliver pitches of different types to different locations at different speeds with less than ten-second intervals between pitches.

System and method for establishing pitch parameters in a ball-throwing machine

A method of visually changing the release points of pitches from a video pitching machine ball-throwing machine, which comprises the steps of (a) providing a pitching machine which is mounted in close proximity to a projection screen having a fixed opening through which a ball can be thrown from the machine toward a batter; (b) providing a video projector for projecting the video image of a pitcher on the screen; (c) providing a programmable controller for synchronizing the release of the ball from the machine with the video image; and changing the visual release point of the pitcher by adjusting the position of the video image relative to the fixed release point in order to simulate the pitcher throwing from a different release point.

Method of modifying the release points of pitches from a video pitching machine

A pitching system is provided for throwing baseballs, softballs and the like, which machine is synchronized to work in conjunction with a video display means to permit a batter to visually view a pitcher prior to and during delivery of the pitch. A video display device is included for displaying a moving video image upon a screen situated adjacent to the pitching system. Said screen has an aperture therein for allowing unobstructed passage of the ball therethrough. The propelling of the ball and the moving image of the pitcher are synchronized by means of a programmable control unit, which chooses the video image appropriate for a particular pitch and instructs the wheels to rotate at the appropriate speeds for said pitch, as well as instructing the machine to assume a horizontal and vertical angular position appropriate for such pitch. When the programmable control detects that the wheels have assumed the appropriate speeds and the machine has assumed the appropriate horizontal and vertical angular position, the control unit initiates the playback of the video image and, after a predetermined interval of time, signals a solenoid to impel the ball into pitching machine so that the ball appears to be thrown by the image of the pitcher.
