A handheld system that is used with an endotracheal tube to facilitate endotracheal intubation is disclosed. The device includes a lighted bougie and an intubating channel, a handle, at least one sensor, a midline alignment light, a tongue grasper, a power source, and electronics. These components combine to form an integrated airway management system. During operation of the system, the light transilluminates the anterior neck tissue of the patient and glows brightly in the midline when the bougie is placed in the trachea.

Endotracheal intubation assistance system

A replaceable liner, for a respiratory mask comprising an elastic substantially tubular shaped body dimensioned to stretch around the mask cushion. The liner is made of a knitted fabric in radially-continuous tubular structure that is preferentially formed through a circular knit to create a seamless tube. The ends of the fabric tube may be hemmed, finished with a fabric or elastic welt, or otherwise finished to prevent unraveling of the knit. The seamless tubular body may be knitted from a variety of natural yarns, such as wool or cotton, or from synthetic yarns, such as nylon, polyester, spandex, or elastic, to achieve a balance of comfort and wicking of skin oils and moisture, while maintaining sufficient radial elasticity to stretch around the respiratory mask. The fabric may be treated with antimicrobial coatings to provide protection against bacteria, fungus and reduce propensity of odors/stains.

Respiratory mask liner

A low-cost and simple-to-use system and method to facilitate a prophylactic pleural lavage protocol at the time of thoracostomy tube placement for traumatic hemothorax in order to reduce the need for secondary intervention for the management of retained hemothorax. The invention may be used in conjunction with existing chest tubes and be administered at the time of initial chest tube placement, and continued at the bedside (by a bedside nurse) over the duration of chest drainage, as necessary. The system includes an operator device that semi-automatically administers a pleural lavage protocol consisting of saline instillation, and suction to slow the clotting process, prevent 'gelling' of blood, and maintain drainability.

System for improving fluid drainage

A device () for medical procedure localization that provides a template that indexes the site of interest along a first axis or plane that is defined by anatomical landmarks of a patient. An embodiment is disclosed in which a first axis is an axillary line from the patient's axilla (armpit) toward the iliac crest (pelvis) and the site of interest is a distance away from the axilla along said first axis. The site of interest is the 3rd, 4or 5intercostal space, into which a needle/catheter and/or chest tube may be placed for decompression.

Device for medical procedure localization and/or insertion

A device to assist performing medical procedures that references anatomical landmarks through adjustable components to identify and stabilize a procedure site and provide guidance in performing the procedure. In one embodiment, an airway creation assist device (ACAD) can be dimensionally adjusted for different patient sizes and properly aligned using anatomical landmarks. The ACAD provides an adjustable template that enables accurate identification of the airway creation site, including but not limited to the cricothyroid membrane. The ACAD uses an insertion guide to guide the obturator and airway tube safely and consistently into the trachea, with a mechanical stop to prevent damaging the posterior trachea wall. The ACAD improves efficacy of the procedure, and makes perforating an incorrect airway creation procedure difficult. In another embodiment, a chest decompression assist device (DAD) Is disclosed for decompression treatment of air and/or fluid in the chest.

Assist device for medical procedures

A device () for medical procedure localization and/or insertion that can be dimensionally adjusted for different patient sizes and properly aligned and stabilized using anatomical landmarks. The device () for medical procedure localization and/or insertion provides an adjustable template that indexes the site of interest at the intersection of a first axis or plane and a second axis or plane. An embodiment is disclosed in which a first axis is the axillary line through the patient's axilla (armpit) and iliac crest (pelvis), and a second axis is the patient's ideal horizontal nipple line. The intersection of the first and second axes is the 4th or 5th intercostal space, into which a needle and/or chest tube may be placed for decompression.

A softgoods seat covering convertible into vehicle extraction device for immobilizing a patient while still seated in the seat of a vehicle, and for safe extraction and transport thereafter. The device uses a plurality of inflatable panels enclosed within a woven cover and connected together by inflation tubing to an inflator for simultaneous or sequential inflation. In normal, pre-blast operations, the durable, uninflated device simply acts as the outer fabric of the seat back and seat cushion, with deployable structures folded/tucked behind the seat back and under the seat pan. Upon arrival of the medic, sections of the device are sequentially deployed through inflation and secured around the patient by wraparound straps to immobilize the patient in the sitting position, and to facilitate extraction and removal in a supine position. The device is intended to mitigate injuries/casualties caused by exposure to landmine or IED blasts.

Vehicle extraction device

Method and apparatus for quantitative and qualitative determination of heart rate, stroke volume, cardiac output, and central fluid volume. Phonocardiography based technique using multiple transducers and multi-sensor processing algorithms provides a non-invasive method of evaluating the output of the heart. This basic system coupled with additional sensor elements provides a wide range of potential capabilities. A system comprising these techniques in a wearable form provides a non-invasive method of determining hydration status and blood volume status. Phonocardiography augmented with multi-sensor signal processing techniques improves signal quality to analyze heart sounds and associated features (e.g. S1 and S2, amongst others). Noise compensation and cancellation techniques for phonocardiography further improve signal to noise ratio to reject external disturbances.

Method and apparatus to monitor physiologic and biometric parameters using a non-invasive set of transducers

A wearable spinal support system having an upper body adapter engaging the head and/or torso of a wearer and a lower body adapter engaging the hips/pelvis, the upper and lower body adapters joined by an articulated structural column. The structural column is made up of stacked vertebral elements each having an aperture provided there through such that a tendon can be fed through the aligned apertures of the vertebral elements. The tendons are fixed at one end and each engaged to mechanical control element at the other end such that the tension/payout in each tendon is independently variable under direction of a controller receiving sensor feedback in order to support the loaded upper body of the wearer and position it relative to the lower body when desirable according to the controller.

Active spinal support system

A compact and failsafe magnetorheological energy absorber design including both a light weight piston (LWP) embodiment in which linear motion is subjected to a linear damping force, and a light weight rotary vane (LWRV) embodiment in which linear motion is converted into rotary motion and is subjected to a rotary damping force. Both embodiments allow increased damper stroke within a compact mechanical profile. A new lightweight Magnetorheological energy attenuation system (LMEAS) for a vehicle seat is also disclosed using the new LMRW MREA.

Failsafe magnetorheological (MR) energy absorber

A Comprehensive and Retrofittable Occupant Sensor Suite (CROSS) for logging of accurate occupant dynamics during blast events encountered on the battlefield. The CROSS system is low cost, can be retrofit to any vehicle seat, will not restrict soldier mobility, and is highly expandable to include both wired and wireless sensors. The CROSS system reliably measures and sends all data channels to a vehicle data recorder (VDR), and internally stores data (with its own power backup) in case connectivity to the VDR or vehicle power is lost during a blast event. The CROSS system yields critical information for forensics analysis, the modeling of occupant dynamics during blast events, and the design of protective devices.

Comprehensive and retrofittable occupant sensor suite (CROSS)

An adaptive energy absorption system for a vehicle seat is disclosed, utilizing an adaptive energy absorber or variable profile energy absorber (VPEA) for mitigating occupant injury due to extreme vehicle movement (e.g., during a vehicle shock event), and/or for mitigating vibration experienced by an occupant of the vehicle seat during normal vehicle operating conditions. The adaptive energy absorption system achieves the aforementioned objectives for a wide range of occupant weights and load levels. An alternate configuration of a dual-goal energy absorption system is also disclosed that enables both shock mitigation and vibration isolation.

Method of determining impact severity and adaptive impact attenuation

A rotary vane magnetorheological energy absorber, which enables a longer stroke capability in a more compact configuration than conventional magnetorheological devices, is disclosed. This novel device design is attractive for applications where long stroking capability, high force dynamic range, device size, and device weight are important. The improved magnetorheological energy absorber comprises an internal or external flow valve and a hollow body enclosing fixed and rotary vanes as well as magnetorheological fluid. Fluid flow in the valve is restricted as a solenoid is activated, thus adjusting the capability of the device to react torque. Various flow valve configurations are disclosed, as well as various motion translation mechanisms for translating linear motion to rotary motion for use of the rotary vane magnetorheological energy absorber. The improved design minimizes the amount of magnetorheological fluid required as compared to conventional linear stroke energy absorbers, thus minimizing device weight.

Rotary vane magnetorheological (MR) energy absorber

An adaptive energy absorption system for a vehicle seat that functions in dual-modes, including a primary mode during severe (shock event) operation and a secondary mode during normal (non-shock event) operation. When operating in primary mode, the present system automatically adjusts a VPEA in real-time to keep loads transmitted to the occupant's body below acceptable injury threshold levels, and can recover to perform said function for multiple shock events. When operating in secondary mode the system reduces vehicle vibration transmitted to the occupant, thereby reducing fatigue and increasing situational awareness.
