A system is configured to store a relationship data set of a plurality of diagnostic estimators and a plurality of failure modes, each failure mode represents a type of failure that can occur with a sensor or a vehicle component of a vehicle system, each diagnostic estimator is associated with a respective subset of the failure modes, each subset defines a control space within the vehicle system that contains at least one of (i) one or more sensors or (ii) one or more vehicle components. The system is configured to store a healthy diagnostic vector regarding nominal operational parameters of the vehicle system; acquire diagnostic information regarding current operational parameters of the vehicle system to generate an error diagnostic vector; apply the error diagnostic vector to the healthy diagnostic vector to generate a ratio diagnostic vector; and apply the ratio diagnostic vector to generate a value for each failure mode.

Fault isolation using on-board diagnostic (OBD) capability data

Methods and systems for estimating the loading of an air filter are disclosed herein. The method includes receiving upstream mass air flow data indicative of a mass air flow on an upstream side of an air filter (i.e., the 'dirty side of the filter'), receiving downstream air pressure data indicative of an air pressure on a downstream side of the air filter (i.e., the 'clean side of the filter'), and receiving downstream temperature data indicative of a temperature on the downstream side of the air filter. The method also includes determining a differential pressure (&#x394;P) across the air filter indicative of a loading of the air filter based on the upstream mass air flow data, the downstream air pressure data, and the downstream temperature data.

Methods and systems for monitoring loading of an air filter

An intake body, systems, and method for reducing acoustic resonance in pressure tap passages include determining and/or setting the length of the drilling tap passages to a value such that the natural frequency of each pressure tap passage is outside of or does not substantially overlap with operational frequency content of an air stream in the intake body. The intake body, systems and method reduce the possibility of exciting the natural acoustic frequencies of the pressure tap passages, and can lead to improved signal-to-noise ratio when detecting EGR flow using a delta-P measurement system.

The method includes determining an average bed temperature, and calculating a target maximum bed temperature based upon the average bed temperature.

Apparatus, system, and method for controlling soot filter regeneration using maximum soot filter temperature

An EGR measurement device for recirculating a portion of exhaust gas of an internal combustion engine that is adapted to allow accurate measurement of exhaust gas flow when the exhaust gas flows in a reverse direction that is opposite to the forward direction toward the intake of the engine. In one embodiment, an extension portion is used which extends over a second tap to allow measurement of pressure in the reverse flow direction so that flow rate can be calculated. In another embodiment, one or more pitot tubes are provided that allows accurate measurement of exhaust gas flows when the exhaust gas flows in a reverse direction.

Exhaust gas recirculation measurement device

An air-exhaust mixer assembly includes an air intake to supply air and an exhaust gas intake to supply exhaust gas. A mixer is fluidly coupled to the air intake and the exhaust gas intake. The mixer has an inner passage and an outer passage defined therein along a longitudinal axis. The inner passage and the outer passage are adapted to mix the air and the exhaust gas by expanding the air and the exhaust gas in radially opposite directions with respect to the longitudinal axis.

Air-exhaust mixer assembly

A pneumatic throttle system for maintaining sufficient exhaust pressure to maintain exhaust flow through an EGR system. The throttle system includes an apertured throttle plate positioned to selectively restrict the flow of exhaust gasses exiting the engine. Movement of the plate is controlled by a pneumatic piston assembly connected thereto. The piston assembly includes a piston movably mounted within a gas-tight chamber. The piston head functionally divides the chamber into two variable-volume portions. The first chamber portion is pneumatically connected to the intake manifold, while the second portion is pneumatically connected to the exhaust manifold. The gas pressure in one chamber portion relative the other determines the relative volume of each chamber portion according to P,V,&equals;P,V,. The piston moves within the chamber to satisfy the above relationship. As the piston moves in response to changes in the respective manifold pressures, the throttle plate moves to increase or decrease gas flow therethrough, accordingly changing the exhaust back-pressure.

Pneumatically controlled exhaust throttle for delivering EGR on turbocharged engines

An improved wastegated turbocharger including ejector nozzles such that the bypassed exhaust flow re-enters the main exhaust flow at a predetermined pitch angle and yaw angle so as to create a drop in turbine back pressure. The exhaust gas turbocharger includes a turbine housing having a turbine chamber, an exhaust housing portion, and an exhaust gas inlet to said turbine chamber wherein a turbine wheel is rotatably mounted in the turbine chamber and is rotatably responsive to exhaust gas flow from the exhaust gas inlet. In one embodiment, an outlet insert is provided which is rigidly attached to the exhaust housing portion and extends toward the turbine chamber thereby defining a bypass chamber and providing an exhaust gas outlet. A bypass flow passage which fluidly connects the exhaust gas inlet with the bypass chamber is also provided. The outlet insert includes a plurality of ejector nozzles for directing exhaust flow from the bypass chamber to the exhaust gas outlet. In another embodiment, an ejector nozzle ring with plurality of ejector nozzles is positioned between the turbine chamber and the outlet insert.

Multiple nozzle ejector for wastegated turbomachinery

A fuel measurement and control system for a gaseous fuel engine having a solenoid actuated fuel flow control valve which is electronically actuated to control a desired metering duration when the control system is operating in a fuel flow control mode. The fuel measurement and control system further includes mode control valve for switching the control system between a fuel flow control mode and a positive fuel shutoff mode, wherein the fuel flow control valve is prevented from opening when the control system is operating in a positive fuel shutoff mode. The fuel flow control valve includes a pressure balance chamber to balance the biasing forces acting on the valve from the gaseous fuel, wherein gaseous fuel is introduced into the pressure balancing chamber to provide the balancing forces. The mode control valve connects the pressure balance chamber to either the fuel supply or the air stream mixer inlet to provide the desired pressure in the pressure balance chamber, wherein the fuel flow control valve is biased to a closed position and prevented from opening when the pressure balance chamber is connected to the air stream mixer inlet and the fuel flow control valve is pressure balanced and may be actuated to control fuel flow when the pressure balance chamber is connected to the gaseous fuel supply. A damping chamber is connected to the pressure balance chamber for damping the oscillations of the solenoid actuator and further reducing the effects of engine vibrations on the solenoid actuator.

Integrated fuel measurement and control system for gaseous fuels

A gas flow network in combination with a highly turbocharged diesel engine for the blending of either EGR gas or blow-by gas from the crankcase vent with fresh charge air is disclosed. In the diesel engine assembly which incorporates the flow network for EGR gas, a venturi conduit and control valve combination is positioned between tile intake manifold and aftercooler and is connected to a flow line carrying the EGR gas. When the turbocharged diesel engine assembly is configured with a flow path for blow-by gas, the venturi and control valve combination is positioned between the intake manifold and aftercooler and is connected to a flow line carrying blow-by gas. These systems utilize a low static pressure at the narrow throat of the venturi so as to induce the flow of EGR gas or blow-by gas into the fresh charge air, the flow being controlled by the state of the control valve.

EGR and blow-by flow system for highly turbocharged diesel engines

An exhaust gas recirculation system for an internal combustion engine by which a portion of exhaust gases produced by the engine is recirculated from an exhaust line of the engine into an intake line of the engine introduces the EGR exhaust gas flow into the intake passageway via a mixer ejector which is provided with mixer lobes and a diffuser downstream of the lobes. The mixer ejector enhances the momentum transfer from the intake flow to the exhaust flow, and in this way, the static pressure of the exhaust flow at the entrance to the mixing region is decreased, thereby increasing the differential pressure across the EGR tube and increasing the exhaust flow. In a second embodiment, in addition to, or instead of, using the special ejector construction of the first embodiment, an ejector pump is located in the EGR tube. The ejector in the EGR tube is connected to the vehicle air system compressor or turbocompressor and serves to pump the exhaust gases to the engine intake passageway. This embodiment enables a more precise controlling of the EGR rate to be obtained, and can provide more EGR flow that which could be obtained with an intake ejector or venturi alone.

Ejector pump enhanced high pressure EGR system

A crankcase ventilation system for a vehicle includes an arrangement of flow conduits and control valves which cooperate with a two-chamber accumulator and with various vehicle components to route crankcase gases to the intake manifold. The primary vehicle components include a compressor, an aftercooler positioned downstream from the compressor, and an engine having an intake manifold and a crankcase. One chamber of the accumulator is coupled by one conduit to the inlet side of the compressor and by a second conduit to the outlet side of the compressor. These two conduits are controlled by a dual valve arrangement. The other chamber of the accumulator is connected by one conduit to the crankcase and by a separate conduit to the intake manifold. Each conduit includes a control valve. The system operates on pressure differences existing between these various components. The cycle begins by opening the conduit which is connected to the inlet side of the compressor. This creates a low pressure on that side of the diaphragm. Due to their higher pressure, the crankcase gases empty into the accumulator and when a predetermined pressure is reached, the various valves change state, allowing the high pressure side of the compressor to empty into the accumulator. This pushes the lower pressure crankcase gases out of the accumulator through a different conduit to the intake manifold. These crankcase gases are then burned in the cylinders and the crankcase gases are not vented directly to the atmosphere.

Crankcase ventilation system

A solid state, electronic, optical transition device includes a multiple-layer structure of semiconductor material which supports substantially ballistic electron/hole transport at energies above/below the conduction/valance band edge. The multiple layer structure of semiconductor material includes a Fabry-Perot filter element for admitting electrons/holes at a first quasibound energy level above/below the conduction/valance band edge, and for depleting electrons/holes at a second quasibound energy level which is lower/higher than the first energy level. Such an arrangement allows common semiconductor material to be used to produce emitters and detectors and other devices which can operate at any of selected frequencies over a wide range of frequencies.
