A method of introducing additives to an air intake system of an engine in order to overcome one or more of the various problems created by formulation of additives in fuels. The method controls at least one of the amount, aerosol particle size and timing of introduction of additives based on information relevant to operation of the engine. The introduced additives form an air-additive mixture and are carried by the airflow in the air-intake system to the combustion chamber of the engine. Another aspect of the invention is an additive introduction system that includes one or more containers for additives, a control system for determining at least one of the amount, aerosol particle size and timing of introduction of the additives, and a device to introduce the additives into the air intake system under the control of the control system.

Airborne engine additive delivery system

A lubricant composition, lubricant concentrate and method for reducing engine deposits. The composition and method include a base oil of lubricating viscosity; an organo-molybdenum compound; a deposition reducing amount of a reaction product of an alkyl-substituted dicarboxylic acid compound selected from the group consisting of alkyl-substituted dicarboxylic acids, alkyl-substituted dicarboxylic acid anhydrides, and mixtures thereof, and a basic salt of aminoguanidine, in an amount sufficient to provide a product rich in alkyl bis-3-amino-1,2,4-triazole; and optionally a phenate detergent. The lubricant composition and method provide engine deposits that are less than an amount of engine deposits in the absence of component (c) and/or optional component (d).

Lubricating method and composition for reducing engine deposits

The present invention provides an additive composition comprising (a) at least one ash-containing phosphorus compound prepared by a primary or secondary alcohol or mixtures thereof, and (b) a salt of at least one hydrocarbylamine and at least one hydrocarbyl acid phosphate. Further, the present invention provides a lubricating composition comprising (a) at least one ash-containing phosphorus compound prepared by a primary or secondary alcohol or mixtures thereof, and (b) a salt of at least one hydrocarbylamine and at least one hydrocarbyl acid phosphate, and methods of use thereof.

Lubricating compositions having improved friction properties

Lubricated surfaces and lubricant compositions for lubricating a surface. The lubricated surface is provided by a lubricant composition including a base oil of lubricating viscosity, at least one metal salt of phosphorothioic acid, and an ashless, sulfur-free organophosphorus compound providing a metal to phosphorus weight ratio ranging from about 0.25:1 to about 1.0:1 by weight. The lubricant composition is substantially devoid of molybdenum.

Additives and lubricant formulations for improved antiwear properties

Lubricant formulations and methods for producing lubricant formulations are described that provide improved wear protection in engines operated using ethanol-based fuels. The improved wear protection may be provided by an increased amount of overbased calcium detergent present in the formulation.

Engine wear protection in engines operated using ethanol-based fuel

The embodiments described herein relate to particular formulations and methods that provide reduced engine deposits. The lubricant composition includes a base oil having a NOACK volatility of from about 5 to about 15 and a zinc dialkyl dithio phosphate composition. The zinc dialkyl dithio phosphate composition has at least about 65 mole percent of zinc dialkyl dithio phosphate compounds derived from all primary alcohols, wherein the zinc dialkyl dithio phosphate composition has greater than about 40 mole percent zinc dialkyl dithio phosphate compounds having alkoxy moieties derived from alcohols having four carbon atoms.

Lubricant formulations and methods

A method and compositions for lubricating surfaces with lubricating oils exhibiting increased phosphorous retention. The lubricated surface includes a lubricant composition containing a base oil of lubricating viscosity, an amount of a phosphorus-containing compound and an amount of at least one hydrocarbon soluble titanium compound that is effective to provide an aged catalyst temperature that converts at least fifty percent of exhaust gas hydrocarbons, carbon monoxide, and NOthat is lower than an aged catalyst temperature that converts at least fifty percent of exhaust gas hydrocarbons, carbon monoxide, and NOof the lubricant composition devoid of the hydrocarbon soluble titanium compound.

Additives and lubricant formulations for improved catalyst performance

An emissions control system for the after treatment of a fuel combustion process exhaust stream includes an exhaust passageway. The exhaust passageway allows for passage of an exhaust stream containing exhaust byproducts from the combustion of a fuel that includes a manganese compound. The exhaust stream includes a manganese compound which complexes with at least one of the exhaust byproducts.

Emissions control system for diesel fuel combustion after treatment system

A lubricant composition comprising a phosphorus-containing compound and a base oil comprising less than about 3% by weight of tetracycloparaffins is disclosed. Methods of making and using the lubricant composition are also disclosed.

Lubricant compositions

A fully formulated lubricating oil, lubricated surface, and lubricant additive concentrates for lubricants providing reduced sludge formation. The fully formulated lubricating oil composition has therein at least one succinimide dispersant derived from a polyalkylene compound having from about 50 to about 85% vinylidene double bonds in the compound, a metal containing detergent, at least one wear reducing agent, at least one antioxidant, and a hydrocarbon soluble titanium compound as a friction modifier. The lubricating oil composition is also substantially free of molybdenum compounds.

Titanium-containing lubricating oil composition

A lubricating oil composition comprising a) an oil of lubricating viscosity having a viscosity index of at least about 95; b) at least one calcium detergent; c) at least one oil soluble titanium compound; d) at least one friction modifier; and e) at least one metal dihydrocarbyldithiophosphate compound. The composition has a Noack volatility of about 15 wt. % or less, and contains from about 0.05 to about 0.6 wt. % calcium from the calcium detergent, titanium metal in an amount of at least about 10 ppm up to about 1500 ppm titanium from the titanium compound, and phosphorus from the metal dihydrocarbyldithiophosphate compound in an amount up to about 0.1 wt. %.

A fully formulated lubricating oil, lubricated surface, and lubricant additive concentrates for lubricants providing reduced sludge formation. The fully formulated lubricating oil composition has therein at least one succinimide dispersant, a metal containing detergent, at least one antioxidant, and a hydrocarbon soluble titanium compound. The lubricating oil has improved sludge reducing properties compared to the same lubricating oil composition devoid of the titanium compound.

The present invention relates to an apparatus and method for delivering manganese from a lubricant source into a fuel combustion system or to the exhaust therefrom. By the present invention, manganese from the lubricant will interact with phosphorus, sulfur, and/or lead from the combustion products. In this manner, the manganese scavenges or inactivates harmful materials which have migrated into the fuel or combustion products, and which can otherwise poison catalytic converters, sensors and/or automotive on-board diagnostic devices. The present invention can also lead to improved durability of exhaust after treatment systems.
