A remote imaging apparatus, and corresponding method, includes a hyperbolic primary mirror that receives light from a remote object to be imaged. The primary mirror has a continuous surface that reflects, at least twice, the light from the remote object. The apparatus also includes a hyperbolic secondary mirror having a continuous surface that reflects, at least twice, the light from the remote object. The secondary mirror delivers the light to a field corrector via a port of the hyperbolic primary mirror, and the field corrector is configured to correct for an optical aberration of one or both of the hyperbolic primary and secondary mirrors. Embodiments can provide low distortion, small aspect ratios, and small form factors and moments of inertia for fleets satellite-based and other imaging systems.

Method and apparatus for remote imaging

Scanning beam display systems based on scanning light on a fluorescent screen. The screen can include fluorescent materials which emit visible light under excitation of the scanning light to form images with the emitted visible light. Multiple lasers can be used to simultaneously scan multiple laser beams to illuminate the screen for enhanced display brightness. For example, the multiple laser beams can illuminate one screen segment at a time and sequentially scan multiple screen segments to complete a full screen.

Optical designs for scanning beam display systems using fluorescent screens

Particle detection systems without knowledge of a location and velocity of a particle passing through a volume of space, are less efficient than if knowledge of the particle location is known. An embodiment of a particle position detection system capable of determining an exact location of a particle in a fluid stream is discussed. The detection system may employ a patterned illuminating beam, such that once a particle passes through the various portions of the patterned illuminating beam, a light scattering is produced. The light scattering defines a temporal profile that contains measurement information indicative of an exact particle location. However, knowledge of the exact particle location has several advantages. These advantages include correction of systematic particle measurement errors due to variability of the particle position within the sample volume, targeting of particles based on position, capture of particles based on position, reduced system energy consumption and reduced system complexity.

Method and apparatus for simultaneously measuring a three dimensional position of a particle in a flow

A diffraction grating for optical communication is disclosed. The diffraction grating includes a substrate and a reflective material adjacent the substrate, wherein one or more input optical signals incident the reflective material is diffracted into one or more output optical signals over a wavelength range of at least approximately 30 nm, within which the diffraction grating is substantially polarization insensitive.

Diffraction grating for wavelength division multiplexing/demultiplexing devices

An opto-mechanical platform for supporting truncated optical elements having at least one substantially flat side surface is disclosed. In one particular exemplary embodiment, the opto-mechanical platform may be realized as an apparatus for supporting truncated optical elements having at least one substantially flat side surface. Such an apparatus may comprise a platform having a substantially flat surface area for supporting the substantially flat side surface of the truncated optical elements. Such an apparatus may also comprise at least one substantially vertical wall formed on at least a portion of the platform for providing mechanical rigidity to the platform.

Opto-mechanical platform

A wavelength division multiplexer/demultiplexer (WDM) for use in an optical network and in an optical performance monitor that minimizes increases in insertion losses over temperature variations has a structure for holding at least one optical component. A diffraction grating assembly having a substrate is held in relation to the at least one optical component by the structure. A lens assembly having a focal length is held in relation to the at least one optical component. The coefficient of thermal expansion of the lens assembly and structure are approximately equal. The grating assembly has an angular dispersion that changes with temperature and the product of the focal length and angular dispersion remains constant over temperature. The WDM further comprises a prism having a change in index of refraction with temperature that is approximately equal to a negative of a coefficient of thermal expansion of the substrate.

Athermalization and pressure desensitization of diffraction grating based WDM devices

A wavelength division multiplexer/demultiplexer (WDM) for use in an optical network has a structure for holding at least one optical component. A diffraction grating assembly having a substrate is held in relation to the at least one optical component by the structure. A lens assembly having a focal length is held in relation to the at least one optical component. The grating assembly has an angular dispersion that changes with temperature and the product of the focal length and angular dispersion remains constant over temperature.

Improved wavelength division multiplexing/demultiplexing devices are disclosed. In the case of an improved wavelength division multiplexing device having a diffraction grating for combining a plurality of narrowband optical beams into a multiplexed, polychromatic optical beam, wherein the plurality of narrowband optical beams are received from a corresponding plurality of optical sources and the multiplexed, polychromatic optical beam is transmitted to a corresponding optical receiver, the improvement comprises employing a plurality of patterned optical input components corresponding to the plurality of narrowband optical beams and the plurality of optical sources for introducing a first patterned phase delay into the plurality of narrowband optical beams, wherein each of the plurality of patterned optical input components has an effective focal length such that each of the plurality of optical sources is disposed substantially inside the effective focal length of a corresponding one of the plurality of patterned optical input components. The improvement also comprises similarly employing a patterned optical output component for introducing a second patterned phase delay into the multiplexed, polychromatic optical beam.

Wavelength division multiplexing/demultiplexing devices employing patterned optical components

An optical performance monitoring device and corresponding diffraction grating are disclosed for utilization within a fiber optic communications network. The diffraction grating includes a substrate and reflective material adjacent the substrate, wherein the diffraction grating is substantially polarization insensitive over a wavelength range of approximately 30 nm.

Device and method for optical performance monitoring in an optical communications network

A device for monitoring wavelength division multiplexed optical signals for use in an optical network and in an optical performance monitor. A device has a structure for supporting components of the device. An optical component is supported at one end of the structure for transmitting the optical signals. A diffraction grating is supported at an opposing end of the structure for diffracting the optical signals from the optical component. An optical sensor is supported in relation to the diffraction grating by the structure for monitoring the optical signals. A telephoto lens assembly is supported by the structure and disposed between the optical sensor and the diffraction grating, the lens assembly having a focal length for focusing the optical signals in relation to the optical sensor. Thermal effects on the structure are balanced against thermal effects on the lens assembly. A prism is disposed between the lens assembly and diffraction grating. The prism is configured to anamorphically compress the diffracted optical signals. Thermal effects on the diffraction grating are balanced against thermal effects on the lens and prism.

Athermalization and pressure desensitization of diffraction grating based spectrometer devices

Improved wavelength division multiplexing/demultiplexing devices are disclosed. In the case of an improved wavelength division multiplexing device having a diffraction grating for combining a plurality of monochromatic optical beams into a multiplexed, polychromatic optical beam, the improvement comprises employing a plurality of patterned optical input components corresponding to the plurality of monochromatic optical beams, wherein each of the plurality of patterned optical input components introduces a first patterned phase delay into a corresponding one of the plurality of monochromatic optical. beams. The improvement also comprises employing a patterned optical output component for introducing a second patterned phase delay into the multiplexed, polychromatic optical beam, wherein the first patterned phase delay and the second patterned phase delay are added so as to reshape the passband of the improved wavelength division multiplexing device.
