Sulfonated substantially random interpolymers made from monomer components comprise from 1 to 65 mole percent of (a) at least one vinyl or vinylidene aromatic monomer, or (b) at least one hindered aliphatic or cycloaliphatic vinylidene monomer, or (c) a combination of at least one vinyl or vinylidene aromatic monomer and at lest one hindered aliphatic or cycloaliphatic vinylidene monomer, and from 35 to 99 mole percent of at least one aliphatic &#x3b1;-olefin having from 2 to 20 carbon atoms; and optionally, from 0 to 20 mole percent of a diene containing from 4 to 20 carbon atoms; wherein the sulfonated interpolymer contains at least one mer (or moiety) of a group represented by the formula &#x2014;SOM where M is hydrogen or a group 1, 7 or 12 metal in ionic form or combination thereof. Blends of these polymers with polyamides and polyolefins are made.

Compositions comprising Group 4 metal complexes containing a diene moiety and activating cocatalysts are used as catalysts for polymerizing olefins, diolefins and/or acetylenically unsaturated monomers. Vinylidene aromatic monomers, particularly styrene are polymerized to form highly syndiotactic polymers.

Polymerization process using diene containing catalysts

A process for preparing a vinylically-unsaturated product compound comprises reacting a halogenated organic compound with a hydrolytically-stable, vinylically-unsaturated precursor compound in the presence of (a) a homogeneous zerovalent palladium catalyst complex, (b) an organic hydrogen halide acceptor and (c) a diluent, wherein the diluent is water or an aqueous solution containing up to 95% by volume of an organic solvent. The halogenated organic compound is selected from aryl halides, benzyl halides or vinylic halides. The hydrolytically-stable, vinylically-unsaturated precursor compound is selected from organosilicon compounds, hydrocarbon compounds or compounds containing at least one of an oxygen atom, a nitrogen atom, a sulfur atom, a phosphorus atom or a combination thereof.

Process for preparing vinylically-unsaturated compounds

An improved process for the preparation of aluminoxanes comprising contacting an aluminoxane precursor such as a hydrocarbyl substituted aluminum compound with a porous organic or inorganic aqueous imbiber material containing water sorbed or imbibed therein.

Preparation of polyhydrocarbyl-aluminoxanes

Diphenylmethanes such as o-benzyltoluene are prepared by contacting a benzyl halide with a benzene in the presence of a catalytic amount of a normally solid, insoluble perfluorosulfonic acid polymer under reaction conditions. The o-benzyltoluenes are useful intermediates in the production of anthraquinone and anthracene.

Polymers of vinyl aromatic monomers having a high degree of syndiotacticity are prepared by contacting with a catalyst comprising a cyclopentadienyl zirconium (IV) complex and polymethylaluminoxane under polymerization conditions.

Zirconium containing catalysts and method of use

Catalyst compositions are disclosed which are a combination of a supported titanium compound such as titanium tetraisopropoxide supported on magnesium dichloride and at least one other supported metallic catalyst such as dicyclopentadienyl zirconium dichloride supported on alumina and a cocatalyst such as aluminoxane. These catalysts are useful in the polymerization of .alpha.-olefins.
