In some examples, a technique may include positioning a first part comprising a ceramic or ceramic matrix composite and a second part comprising a ceramic or a CMC adjacent to each other to define a joint region at the interface of the first part and the second part. In some examples, the joint region may be heated using at least one of a laser or a plasma arc source to heat the joint region to an elevated temperature. The first and second parts may be pressed together and cooled to join the first and second parts at the joint region. In other examples, a solid braze material including a filler material and a metal or alloy may be delivered to the joint region and locally heated to cause a constituent of the filler material and a constituent of the metal or alloy to react. When reacted, the constituents may form a solid material, which may join the first and second parts.

A freeform extrusion fabrication process for producing three-dimensional ceramic, metal and functionally gradient composite objects, including the steps of filling a plurality of paste sources with a respective plurality of aqueous paste compositions, operationally connecting respective syringes containing respective aqueous paste compositions to a mixing chamber, moving a first aqueous paste composition from a first respective paste source into the mixing chamber, moving a second aqueous paste composition from a second respective paste source into the mixing chamber, mixing the first and second aqueous paste compositions to define a first admixture having a first admixture composition, extruding the first admixture onto a surface to define an extruded layer having a first admixture composition, surrounding the sides of the extruded layer with an oil bath, radiatively drying the extruded layer.

Method and apparatus for fabricating ceramic and metal components via additive manufacturing with uniform layered radiation drying

A method of producing a ceramic weld, including identifying a ceramic first surface and a ceramic second surface to be bonded together, maintaining a non-oxidizing atmosphere over the first and second surfaces, and engaging the first and second surfaces to define a joint. An arc is generated between an electrode and the joint to create a liquid phase, and the liquid phase is cooled to yield a solid fusion layer, wherein the first and second surfaces are joined in the fusion layer.

Ceramic welds, and a method for producing the same

A method of sintering a ZrB&#x2014;SiC composite body at ambient pressures, including blending a first predetermined amount of ZrBpowder with a second predetermined amount of SiC powder, wherein both powders are characterized by the presence of surface oxide impurities. Next the blended powders are mixed to yield a substantially homogeneous powder mixture and a portion of the substantially homogeneous powder mixture is formed into a green body. The body is fired to a first temperature, wherein substantially all surface oxide impurities are reduced and/or volatilized to substantially eliminate oxides from the green body, and the body is heated to a second temperature and sintered to yield a composite body of at least about 99 percent theoretical density (more typically at least about 99.5 percent theoretical density) and characterized by SiC whisker-like inclusions distributed substantially evenly in a ZrBmatrix.

High-density pressurelessly sintered zirconium diboride/silicon carbide composite bodies and a method for producing the same

A method of sintering a composite body characterized by a transition metal carbide phase (such as a ZrC phase) substantially evenly distributed in a second, typically refractory, transition metal (such as W) matrix at ambient pressures, including blending a first predetermined amount of first transition metal oxide powder (such as ZrO) with a second predetermined amount of second transition metal carbide powder (such as WC powder). Next the blended powders are mixed to yield a substantially homogeneous powder mixture and a portion of the substantially homogeneous powder mixture is formed into a green body. The body is fired to a first temperature, wherein the first transition metal oxide is substantially reduced and the simultaneously generated CO and gas are evolved from the body to substantially eliminate oxides from the green body, and the body is heated to a second temperature and sintered to yield a composite body of about 99 percent theoretical density and characterized by a first transition metal carbide phase distributed substantially evenly in a second transition metal matrix.

Reaction sintered zirconium carbide/tungsten composite bodies and a method for producing the same

A solid oxide fuel cell having a multichannel electrode architecture and method for preparing the same, the method including forming a first carbon laden composition, including a first thermoplastic binder, into a rod, applying a first zirconia laden composition, including a second thermoplastic binder, onto the rod to form a composite feed rod, extruding the composite feed rod to form a controlled geometry filament, bundling the extruded composite feed rod to form a multicellular feed rod, extruding the multicellular feed rod to form a multicellular rod, cutting the multicellular rod into multicellular discs, applying a zirconia laden material to one surface of a multicellular discs to form a multicellular structure, and heating processing the multicellular structure. The fuel cell is completed by adding anode and cathode materials to the multicellular structure.

Method of preparing a solid oxide fuel cell

A process for continuous composite coextrusion comprising: (a) forming first a material-laden composition comprising a thermoplastic polymer and at least about 40 volume % of a ceramic or metallic particulate in a manner such that the composition has a substantially cylindrical geometry and thus can be used as a substantially cylindrical feed rod; (b) forming a hole down the symmetrical axis of the feed rod; (c) inserting the start of a continuous spool of ceramic fiber, metal fiber or carbon fiber through the hole in the feed rod; (d) extruding the feed rod and spool simultaneously to form a continuous filament consisting of a green matrix material completely surrounding a dense fiber reinforcement and said filament having an average diameter that is less than the average diameter of the feed rod; and (e) arranging the continuous filament into a desired architecture to provide a green fiber reinforced composite.

Continuous composite coextrusion methods, apparatuses, and compositions

A ceramic or metal feedstock composition useful for manufacture of prototype elements using a filament or ribbon deposition apparatus, includes a ceramic or metal powder, a binder of ethylene/acrylate copolymer or homopolymer, a wax and liquid plasticizer mixed together in the form of a ribbon or rod which may then be used in a prototyping device.
