A method and system for use with actuation system to control a plurality of vanes disposed within a turbine engine, wherein a vane position sensor provides a vane position signal corresponding to a vane position of the plurality of vanes, the actuation system includes a plurality of motors engaged in response to the vane position signal, and a differential gearbox having a plurality of inputs operatively coupled to the plurality of motors and an output operatively coupled to the plurality of vanes, wherein an output speed of the output is a sum of a plurality of input speeds of the plurality of inputs.

Redundant speed summing actuators

A movable vane control system is disclosed for use with a gas turbine engine having a turbine axis of rotation. The system includes a plurality of rotatable turbine vanes in a gas flow path within a turbine case of the gas turbine engine. A first vane position sensor having a first distance sensor is configured to sense the distance between the first distance sensor and a surface portion of a first of said plurality of vanes or a first movable target connected to the first vane. Additionally, the first distance sensor, the first vane surface portion, the first movable target, or a combination thereof is configured to provide a variable distance between the first distance sensor and the first vane surface portion or first movable target that varies as a function of a position of the first vane.

A turbine is provided and includes an outer duct, a turbine casing formed to define a turbine interior, the turbine casing being disposed within the outer duct to define an annulus, a vane element pivotably coupled to the turbine casing via a spindle to extend spanwise into the turbine interior and a sensor element supportively coupled to the outer duct and configured to sense a characteristic of the spindle within the annulus from which a pivot angle of the vane element is derivable.

A device and method for measuring the rotational position of a rotating feature, the device employing rotary to linear magnification. A connecting member is operatively connected to the rotating feature, the connecting member extending through one or more structural layers of an enclosure. An arm is operatively connected to the connecting member and located outside the enclosure. A target is arranged with respect to a position sensor, with the position sensor configured to measure the linear position of the target with respect to the position sensor. A cable is connected to the arm at an attachment point, the cable also being connected to the target. One or more pulleys are arranged to control the path of the cable between the attachment point on the arm and the target.

A sensor assembly includes a first structure and a second structure disposed radially outwardly of the first structure. Also included is a sensor body extending through the first and second structures, the sensor body having first and second ends, the second end disposed in an ambient environment. Further included is a sensor mounted to the sensor body proximate the second end, the sensor configured to detect a characteristic of a target disposed within the first structure. Yet further included is a first sealing assembly configured to operatively couple the sensor body to the second structure and to accommodate movement of the sensor body. The first sealing assembly includes a mounting body, a radial seal, a slider plate and a slider plate retainer disposed in a recess of the mounting body and in abutment with the slider plate.

A sensor assembly includes a first structure and a second structure disposed radially outwardly of the first structure. Also included is a sensor body extending through the first and second structures, the sensor body having first and second ends, the first end disposed proximate a first environment defined by the first structure and the second end located radially outwardly of the second structure. Further included is a first sealing assembly configured to operatively couple the sensor body to the second structure and to accommodate movement of the sensor body. Yet further included is a position sensor operatively coupled to the sensor body, the position sensor configured to determine a position of a target located within the first interior volume. Also included is at least one biasing member in contact with the target to bias the target into constant operative contact with the sensor body.

Also included is a sensor body extending through the first and second structures, the sensor body having first and second ends, the second end located radially outwardly of the second structure. Further included is a first sealing assembly configured to couple the sensor body to the second structure and to accommodate movement of the sensor body due to relative movement between the first and second structures. Yet further included is an interior cavity of the sensor body, a linear position sensor operatively coupled to the sensor body, and a rotary linkage assembly located within the interior cavity and coupled to a target. Also included is a rotary-to-linear interface disposed between the rotary linkage assembly and the sensor and configured to convert rotational motion of the rotary linkage assembly to linear motion.

Rotary-to-linear conversion for sensor assembly and method of detecting angular position of a target through multiple structures

An electronic control configuration includes at least one secondary microprocessor operable to control a device. The at least one secondary microprocessor assumes protection control of the device responsive to a first type of failure by transmitting a protection control signal to a first effector. The at least one secondary microprocessor assumes backup control of the device responsive to a second type of failure by transmitting a backup control signal to a second effector. The backup control functionality of the at least one secondary microprocessor can be selectively disabled.
