A system for obtaining and providing enhanced PAP metrics of a patient's sleep period includes: a pressure support device for use in providing a flow of breathing gas to the patient; a processing unit; and a number of auxiliary devices in wireless communication with the processing unit. Each auxiliary device of the number of auxiliary devices is structured to detect and collect sleep-related data of the patient. The processing unit is programmed to: receive data obtained by a number of sensors of the pressure support device during operation of the pressure support device in providing the flow of breathing gas to the patient; receive supplemental data obtained by the number of auxiliary devices while the pressure support device is not providing the flow of breathing gas to the patient; and determine the enhanced PAP metrics of the sleep period of the patient utilizing the data and the supplemental data.

System and method for providing enhanced pap metrics

The present disclosure describes a sleep staging system. The sleep staging system comprising: one or more sensors configured to generate output signals conveying information related to one or more breathing parameters of subject; and one or more physical computer processors operatively connected with the one or more sensors, the one or more physical computer processors configured by computer readable instructions to: determine, based on the output signals, one or more breathing features of individual breaths of the subject; determine a distribution of the one or more breathing features over one or more time windows; detect presence of a breathing event based on the output signals; determine sleep states of the subject with a sleep stage classifier model based upon the distribution of the breathing features and the one or more breathing events; and provide feedback indicating the sleep states.

The present disclosure pertains to a system configured to enhance deep sleep in a subject during positive airway pressure therapy. A pressure generator is configured to generate a pressurized flow of breathable gas for delivery to an airway of the subject. Sensors are configured to generate output signals conveying information related to breathing of the subject. One or more hardware processors are configured to cause the pressure generator to generate the pressurized flow of breathable gas in accordance with a positive airway pressure therapy regime based on the information in the output signals; determine sleep stages of the subject based on the information in the output signals; and responsive to the sleep stages indicating the subject is in deep sleep, cause the pressure generator to adjust the pressurized flow of breathable gas to deliver a stimulus to the subject, the stimulus configured to enhance deep sleep in the subject.

Providing sleep therapy with a pressure therapy system

The present disclosure describes a sleep staging system. The system comprises: one or more sensors configured to generate output signals conveying information related to breathing parameters of subject during a respiratory therapy session; and one or more physical computer processors configured by computer readable instructions to: determine, based on the output signals, one or more breathing features of individual breaths of the subject; determine a distribution of the one or more breathing features over a plurality of time windows, at least one of the time windows having a length of at least 60 seconds; determine sleep states of the subject by mapping the distribution of the breathing features to one or more sleep states using a sleep stage classifier model, the sleep stage classifier model configured to determine the sleep states; and provide feedback indicating the sleep states during the respiratory sleep session.

A method for the concurrent treatment of obstructive sleep apnea and hypertension in a patient comprises providing a flow of treatment gas to the airway of the patient in accordance with a first set of flow parameters. Determining that the patient has achieved stable breathing while receiving the provided flow of treatment gas in accordance with the first set of parameters. Determining a set of target patient breath parameters from breath data collected from the patient. Adjusting the flow of treatment gas to a different set of flow parameters. Determining that the new patient breath data, collected from the patient, accords with the target patient breath parameters and providing the flow of treatment gas to the patient in accordance with the different set of flow parameters. The target patient breath parameters include a target tidal volume of the patient which is greater than a first tidal volume of the patient.

Systems and methods for concurrent airway stabilization and pulmonary stretch receptor activation

Concurrent treatment of obstructive sleep apnea and hypertension in a patient, via a pressure generating device, includes providing a flow of treatment gas to an airway of a patient in accordance with an initial set of flow parameters with respect to an obstructive sleep apnea mode. Responsive to determining that the patient has achieved stable breathing while receiving the flow of treatment gas, the flow parameters are increased above the initial set of flow parameters with respect to a hyper-ventilation mode. The flow of treatment gas is then provided to the airway of the patient in accordance with the increased flow parameters for a predetermined period of time. The increased flow parameters are configured to bring the patient's breath into accordance with target patient breath parameters configured to inflate the patient's lungs beyond a threshold for activating pulmonary stretch receptors of the airway of the patient.

Sleep apnea can be treated with pressure support therapy using a target pressure level. Detected respiratory events during consecutive multi-session testing period are compared to determine statistical metrics covering gradual changes in therapy efficiency. Adjustments to the target pressure level are based on changes in variability, and maybe made in between therapy sessions.

Pressure adjustment in a respiratory therapy device

Systems and methods for providing respiratory therapy to a subject respond and/or adapt to the detection of an occurrence of a respiratory event. For example, the pressure level of a pressurized flow of breathable gas may be increased responsive to the occurrence of one or more apneas. Based on usage information spanning more than one therapy session, such as the tracked pressure levels, a starting pressure level for a pressurized flow of breathable gas for a subsequent therapy session is determined. The starting level at the beginning of the subsequent therapy session(s) may be the 90% pressure level as determined during the preceding period during which usage information has been gathered.

Starting pressure for respiratory therapy devices

A method of detecting dyssynchrony between a patient and a pressure support system includes receiving patient flow data relating to a flow of gas provided to the patient by the pressure support system, receiving an I/E state signal representing a respiratory phase of the patient as determined by the pressure support system, and analyzing the patient flow data and the I/E state signal and declaring a dyssynchrony for a breath based on at least one of the patient flow data and the I/E state signal. The method includes determining whether at least one of a number of predetermined criterion is satisfied based on at least one of the patient flow data and the I/E state signal, and declaring the dyssynchrony for the breath if it is determined that at least one of the number of predetermined criterion is satisfied.

Patient-ventilator dyssynchrony detection

A monitoring system is used to measure various parameters of the sleep, respiration, and/or other bodily functions of a subject. One or more metrics are calculated that quantify deviation from the mean, trends, changes over time, and/or other changes in the parameters. The metrics are used to generate notifications of these changes that can be conveyed to caregivers and/or other users.

A pressure support methodology and system that utilizes at least two, and possibly all three, of information relating to (i) airway patency, i.e., the degree to which the patient's airway is open, (ii) the primary cause of the current sleep disordered breathing event, and (iii) the patient's response to previous pressure changes to automatically titrate pressure when presented with a sleep disordered breathing event. A system for delivering a flow of breathing gas to a patient's airway that includes a gas flow generator and a patient circuit for communicating the flow of gas to the patient's airway. A sensor measures a characteristic associated with the flow of gas, such as flow rate, maximum average inspiratory flow, tidal volume or minute ventilation. A controller determines a first characteristic based on the measured characteristic and provides positive pressure support to the patient if the first characteristic is below a first target and provides a negative support if the first characteristic is above a second target. When the positive pressure support is provided, the pressure provided during inspiration is higher than the pressure provided during expiration. When the negative pressure support is provided, the pressure provided during inspiration is lower than the pressure provided during expiration.

Servo ventilation using negative pressure support

A method of operating a ventilator or pressure support system that automatically determines a timed back up rate for the patient based on the patient's spontaneous breathing patterns. The aggressiveness of the determined rate increases as the patient takes less spontaneous breaths. Also, a method wherein one or more mechanisms are used to determine whether a machine breath should be issued. Each mechanism consists of a basic timing element coupled with one or more logical permits. Both the timing element and each of the one or more logical permits must be satisfied to allow the timing mechanism to trigger a machine breath.
