A gauge assembly 10 having improved accuracy due to its correction of certain errors. The assembly 10 includes a controller 12 which is communicatively coupled to at least one sensor 14 and a gauge driver 16 by use of a communications path or bus 28. Gauge driver 16 selectively and rotatably moves a staff 18 and pointer 26 within a gauge display 22 in response to the certain error compensated data received from controller 12.

A clamping circuit for protecting circuits operatively connected between a control circuit, a driving circuit, a power source, and an output circuit includes an inductive flyback circuit to add current to the output circuit through the driving circuit, and a reverse power protection circuit operatively connected between the inductive flyback circuit and the control circuit wherein the reverse power protection circuit opens the inductive flyback circuit and provides an electrical connection between the power source and the output circuit allowing current to flow through the output circuit when the power source is connected to the driving circuit incorrectly.

A method for detecting a fault in an automotive system is disclosed, the method including the steps of energizing the system, monitoring the power supply value of the vehicle power supply during a predetermined interval; detecting an inability of the system to be placed into a desired operating state and generating a fault signal in response thereto; and recording each occurrence of a fault signal only when the power supply value is within predetermined limits.

Method of detecting a fault in an automotive system

A variable effort steering system disclosed herein changes the steering effort required to maneuver a vehicle which lacks power-assisted steering by modifying an electromagnetically applied holding torque exerted upon the steering shaft. By increasing or decreasing the applied holding torque, a change in the steering wheel's resistance to movement can be sensed by the driver. The device of the present invention allows the same high mechanical advantage steering gear ratio having a mechanical advantage to be deployed effectively over the spectrum of vehicle dynamic states. The resistive force exerted is a function of any dynamic state of the vehicle, such as its speed, thereby producing, for example, high speed steering stability. The variable effort steering system proposed includes a variable load actuator having a rotary member which is mounted upon the steering shaft, a stationary member surrounding the rotary member and at least one core which extends towards the rotary member. Windings are provided around the cores. When a current is delivered through the windings, a magnetic field is produced and a holding torque is exerted on the rotary member. The holding torque resists the turning motion of the rotary member, the steering shaft, and consequently, the manually applied torque.

Variable effort steering system

A vehicular control with differential wheel speed input senses and operates with differential rotation of wheel speeds and uses information obtained from individual wheel speed sensors to control steering and/or suspension systems of a vehicle.
