The present invention is for a guide wire comprising a core wire with a first diameter and the distal end having at least one section having a second, lesser diameter and a radiolucent coil surrounding the distal end at the second core wire diameter with a radiopaque wire located at the distal end within the radiolucent coil and a means for securing the radiopaque wire to the core wire. Another embodiment of the present invention is a guide wire comprising a core wire having a radiolucent portion and a radiopaque portion, the radiopaque portion being distal of the radiolucent portion and contiguous with the radiolucent portion, the proximal end of the core wire having a first diameter and the distal end having at least one step down diameter section, a radiolucent coil surrounding the step down diameter section of the core wire, the proximal end of the radiolucent coil being fixedly mounted to the proximal end of the step down diameter section of the core wire, and a tip ball fixedly attached to the distal end of the core wire and to the distal end of the radiolucent coil.

Guide wire

A guide wire extension assembly for angioplasty comprising a guide wire and an extension wire that utilize a peg and hole connection. The proximal end of the guide wire and the distal end of the extension wire have connector members attached that allow for mating the ends of the guide wire and extension wire together. In one embodiment the first connector member has a horizontal surface with a hole that is perpendicular to the horizontal surface. The second connector member has a horizontal surface with a peg extending upwardly from the horizontal surface, such that when the first connector member and the second connector member are joined, the peg and the hole fit together. In another embodiment, the first connection member and the second connection member are made from magnetic material so that when the peg is inserted in the hole, it is held in place by magnetic attraction. In another embodiment, the first connector member has a horizontal surface with a longitudinal slot that is perpendicular to the horizontal surface and extends through the first connection member. The second connector member has a horizontal surface with a peg extending upwardly from the horizontal surface with a latch on the end, the latch being dimensioned to be complementary to the slot, such that the latch fits through the slot and when the connection members are rotated away from each other, the latch locks the members together.

Guide wire extension peg and hole with 90 degree latch

The present invention is for a guide wire with an improved flexible distal section with both a radiolucent coil and radiopaque coil. The guide wire comprising a core wire having a proximal end and a distal end, the proximal end of the core wire having a first diameter and the distal end having one or more reduced diameters, a radiolucent coil surrounding the reduced diameter of the core wire, the radiolucent coil having a proximal end and a distal end, the radiolucent coil having a length that is shorter than the reduced diameter of the core wire, the proximal end of the radiolucent coil being fixedly mounted to the proximal end of the reduced diameter of the core wire, a radiopaque coil surrounding the reduced diameter of the core wire, the radiopaque coil having a proximal end and a distal end, the radiopaque coil having a length that is shorter than the reduced diameter of the core wire such that the total length of the radiolucent coil and the radiopaque coil added together are approximately the same length as the reduced diameter of the core wire, the proximal end of the radiopaque coil being concentrically welded to the distal end of the radiolucent coil, the distal end of the radiopaque coil being welded to the distal end of the reduced diameter of the core wire forming a tip ball and a spring brace located distal of the welded connection between the radiolucent coil and the radiopaque coil, the spring brace attaching the radiopaque coil to the reduced diameter of the core wire.
