A laser ignition assembly comprises first and second mounting surfaces opposed to each other. A central cavity is formed through the surfaces and sized to receive energetic material therein. A vertical solder bridge is formed between the surfaces and an edge emitting laser diode disposed between the surfaces. The laser diode is oriented such that a light fluence therefrom is directed in a radial direction into the central cavity. The surfaces can be circuit boards, e.g., copper clad, rigid circuit boards, and have an annular shape. The central cavity can be further defined by an interboard gap between the surfaces. The ignition assembly can fit within a primer cup of a munition.

A weapon system effectively, efficiently and safely transmits high energy radio frequency energy into the confines of the breech environment to initiate propelling charges. Legacy components are leveraged, along with advanced manufacturing techniques, to create antenna structures which transmit the radio frequency energy throughout the breech to initiate radio frequency-based primers.

An ignition system for energetics including artillery charges includes a radio frequency transmitter and a radio frequency igniter. The radio frequency igniter receives and converts radio frequency energy into heat or electrical energy for the purpose of igniting energetics, such as propellants or pyrotechnics. The radio frequency igniter may be applied to the exterior of the energetic container or may be integral to the container.

An ammunition cartridge for a gun is optically initiated by a mechanism wholly within the cartridge case itself. The case has as optical primer initiation means producing light fluence to ignite an optical sensitive mix, which ignited optical sensitive mix may in turn ignite into a flashtube, and which ignited flashtube may in turn ignite a bed of propellant in said cartridge. The optical primer initiation means may be an LED, a laser diode, a VCSEL, or some other light emitting device in general. The cartridge optically initiated primer package is so sized and made electrically and mechanically seamlessly physically compatible with current ammunition cartridges such that these new cartridges are completely interchangeable. If the cartridge primer initiation means is of a percussion type, the cartridge is adapted to include an in-line piezoelectric crystal so that electrical power will be generated when the cartridge assembly is struck by a firing pin during percussion type operations; the power is then used to initiate the light emitting device.

A modular artillery charge system module includes a central igniter container and cap end and body end igniter containers fixed to the central igniter container. The central igniter container is a rigid, longitudinal tube with opposing ends. The end igniter containers are fixed to the opposing ends of the central igniter container. Each end igniter container includes a large container portion and a small container portion that extends from the large container portion toward the central igniter container. The central igniter container and end igniter containers are made of a rigid material, such as foamed celluloid.

Disposable, miniature internal optical ignition source for ammunition application

A diode pumped solid-state laser for high shock, high vibration environments such as those found in laser ignition systems for artillery systems which internally integrate into the breech of an artillery system such as a 155 mm howitzer. The diode pumped solid-state laser employs a unique gain medium mounting which permits its use in such high shock/high vibration environments. Contributing further to robustness is a monolithic design based on diode arrays mounted in a linear configuration along with an advanced polycrystalline gain medium laser rod. Advantageously, and in sharp contrast to laser ignition systems incorporating flash lamps, the diode pumped solid-state laser of the present invention permits a seamless integration into a howitzer artillery weapons system without other complex mounting provisions or shock isolation system(s). Of further advantage, the diode pumped solid-state laser of the present invention facilitates integration into existing breech hardware with relatively only minor modification. This simplifies design of allied such breech and laser assemblies, their integration requirements, and further results in a reduced total system weight.

A fiber optic based probe has been designed to sample the fluorescence or phosphorescence signal from animal or human tissues, such that the light intensity is not multiply scattered. This type of measurement allows a linear detection of the concentration of the luminescent compound non-invasively from the tissue. The basic principle of the fiber probe is to use fiber optics which are smaller in diameter that the average scattering length of the tissue. In order to increase the detected signal to a stronger level, multiple fibers are used by spacing them out on the surface of the tissue so that each fiber samples an isolated section of tissue. Each fiber delivers the excitation light to the tissue, and receives the emission light from the tissue. All fibers are coupled into the same detector to integrate the overall signal. Sampling of the scattered excitation signal intensity is also done to correct for changes in the scattering coefficient between tissues. This fiber bundle can be used to quantify the concentration of fluorescence or phosphorescent chemicals in vivo non-invasively. One application of this device is as a dosimetry tool, to monitor photosensitizer drug concentration within tissue for photodynamic therapy.

A window assembly for transmitting light into and from a vessel containing a high pressure, high temperature, highly reactive environment includes a truncated conical window which is substantially transparent to radiation, a truncated conical metal seal which circumferentially engages the window, and a case to which the window and the seal are secured. To facilitate automatic cleaning of the window, the surface of the window which is exposed to the high-pressure environment is seated substantially flush with the high-pressure surface of the case. By initially seating the window assembly by means of mechanical pressing, then subjecting the window assembly to a series of successively higher transient combustion pressures, a window assembly can be fabricated which can withstand prolonged service in a harsh environment such as that encountered in a large caliber artillery cannon or equivalent scientific and industrial applications.
