The invention is a system for recording and reading both program data and acoustical control data and playing back the data to optimize performance of audio reproduction and recreate the effect of an original acoustic environment. The system has a recording apparatus, a playback apparatus and a recording media. The recording apparatus produces recording media having both acoustic control information and audio data. The playback apparatus gives the user some ability to override otherwise automatic parameter adjustments. Optionally, a metadata display system takes information about the physical arrangement of instruments and other characteristics of the recording session and the recording studio and makes that visually available to the listener. A player type register identifies the characteristics of the playback device to cause an adjustment of the characteristics of the playback system.

Recording and playback control system

Methods and apparatus for recording on DVD-like recording media in which audio content is stored in a high-capacity multi-channel (e.g., six-channel) format are provided. Various channels may use various resolutions. A two-channel audio output may be derived from the multi-channel audio data stream during playback. To facilitate an accurate derivation, the mixing coefficients to be used in generating the derivation can be supplied along with the six-channel audio data.

Recording and playback of multi-channel digital audio having different resolutions for different channels

An electronic book includes pages with printed materials, a display showing selectively a plurality of images and a control circuit arranged to cause pictures to be displayed in accordance with pages being viewed by a reader. In one embodiment, a sensor is used to detect which page is the reader looking at. In other embodiments, an automatic sensor or a sensor operated by the reader is used to determine what images are to be shown. Multiple images are also displayed in sequence to form moving images. In addition, speakers may also be provided to reproduce sounds.

A container for a beverage or other foods or household goods includes a wall with a display generating digital images). A controller is also provided associated with a memory, said memory storing digital imaging data. The controller selectively retrieves the data from the memory and generates electrical signals to the display. Data may also be transmitted from or received by the container through an external interface controlled by the controller. Switches, sensors and other selector elements may be provided to activate the display and to select the images to be shown. Additionally, miniature speakers may also be provided which cooperate with the display to show multimedia presentations.

An electronic baseball card and an associated adapter is disclosed for showing images of baseball players or other personalities. The card includes a flat body similar to a standard pre-printed baseball card with an electronic display and a memory storing imaging data. The display shows images based on the data from the memory. The stand includes its own memory and an external interface for receiving data from an external source and for storing it into its memory. When the card is coupled to the stand, the data from the stand memory may be transferred and stored in the card memory. In addition to images, the card and/or the stand can also display other information such as statistical or biographical information of one or more players.

A composite multi-layered display device consists of two components: a light emitting component which can be used to generate and display images, and a generating component such as a solar cell which generates an electrical current in the presence of light. The two components are incorporated into corresponding co-extensive layers, with the light emitting component being light transmissive to allow external light to impinge on the generating component. Preferably, the light emitting component includes a light emitting polymer material and the generating component includes a solar cell which includes amorphous silicon.

The frame includes a base, and a border forming a window through which a display area is visible. Electronic displays are attached to the base and/or the border, and a control circuit generates signals for the displays to display various images. The displays can be either color LCD devices or light emitting polymer devices. Imaging data for the displays is stored in an internal or replaceable memory.

The present invention provides an adapter for replaceable flash memory cards which can be used in existing stereo systems having a standard cassette player interface. The adapter is constructed and arranged to interface with a conventional stereo system so as to maintain full functionality of the included cassette player even when used with an adapter. Disposed within the housing is a flash card, or other solid state memory, which contains digital data. Audio data is retrieved form the card, decompressed, converted into corresponding analog signals and then fed to the play head of a standard cassette player. Circuits are provided to maintain substantially all the function of the cassette player, including fast forward and reverse.

An analog signal, for example in a sound recording process, is converted into an input series of digital signals and is then encoded using a special differential encoding scheme. The scheme involves generating two series of signals, one series corresponding to some of the terms of the input signals, while other terms of the input series are excluded. For example the first series may include every second term of the input series. The second series includes terms corresponding to a difference between at least two terms of the input series, at least one of which is not included in the first series. Preferably the two terms of the input series defining a term of the second series are sequential or at most separated by one other term. The two series can be combined and can be either transmitted to a receiver or recorded on a medium. A high quality output is then obtained by reconstructing the input series from the two series. Alternatively, allow quality output is generated by using the first series and only some of the terms (if any) if the second series.

Dual rate encoding scheme and apparatus using the same

A decorative article such as a wristwatch, pin or pendant having a case with a substantial visible surface area is provided with a display mounted on said area and an electrical circuit arranged to provide signals for said display so that a predetermined image appears on, or is displayed by, said display. One or more external members are also provided which can be selectively mounted on the case. Imbedded in each external member is a memory storing digital imaging data. When a particular external member is mounted on the case, its memory is accessed by the electrical circuit and the corresponding data is retrieved and used to generate the image on the display. Changing the external member to a different member results in a different image being displayed on the display.

Watch or other jewelry article with replaceable electronic images

Methods and apparatus for recording and playing back multi-channel digital audio having different sampling rates for different channels are provided. Recording is accomplished by sampling a plurality of channels of audio data and arranging the samples of the plurality of channels of audio data in most nearly the order needed during playback. Playback is accomplished by accessing the samples of the plurality of channels of audio data and converting the samples from digital to analog form. The playback may include deriving audio signals in a different format from the format in which the programming is recorded.
