Some embodiments provide a method that provides tools for defining a scene including media objects in a multi-dimensional space. The method provides a set of user interface tools for adjusting a region of focus for rendering the space from a particular location within a particular field of view. In some embodiments, the region of focus is a first region in the space within the particular field of view and the space further includes a second region outside of the region of focus within the particular field of view. In some embodiments, the method also provides a set of effects for applying to the second region but not the first region to visually indicate the first region as the region of focus within the space and the second region as a region outside of the region of focus within the space.

Depth of field for a camera in a media-editing application

An electronic device may be provided with a display. A content generator such as a camera may capture images in high dynamic range mode or standard dynamic range mode. The images may have associated image metadata such as face detection information, camera settings, color and luminance histograms, and image classification information. Control circuitry in the electronic device may determine tone mapping parameters for the captured images based on the image metadata. The tone mapping parameters for a given image may be stored with the image in the metadata file. When it is desired to display the image, the control circuitry may apply a tone mapping process to the image according to the stored tone mapping parameters. The algorithm that is used to determine tone mapping parameters based on image metadata may be based on user preference data gathered from a population of users.

Tone mapping techniques for increased dynamic range

For a media-editing application, some embodiments provide a method for creating a media presentation that combines several media clips. During an editing process to define a particular media project, the method receives a first set of edits to the particular media project while the media-editing application is in a first resolution mode that uses content stored at a first resolution to generate the particular media project. The method receives a selection of a user interface tool to modify the resolution mode. The method switches to a second resolution mode that uses content stored at a second resolution to generate the particular media project without interrupting the editing process. After switching to the second resolution mode, the method receives a second set of edits to the same particular media project during the same editing process to define the particular media project.

Media-editing application with multiple resolution modes

Some embodiments provide a method of performing several shading operations for a graphic object in a scene that is displayed on a device. The device includes several processing units. The method receives a set of criteria that can define a set of parameters that relate to the shading operations. The method determines an allocation of the shading operations to the processing units based on the received criteria. The method allocates the shading operations to the processing units based on the determined allocations. The method renders the graphic object based on several instructions that comprise the shading operations. In some embodiments, the set of criteria is received during execution of the operations.
