A service-area repeater for deployment in a service area to provide capacity supplied by a base station located remotely from the service-area repeater includes downlink circuitry to receive, via a donor antenna coupled to the service-area repeater, transformed RF downlink signals transmitted from the base station or a base-station repeater, the base station transforming original RF downlink signals or the base-station repeater transforming original RF downlink signals received from the base station to produce the transformed RF downlink signals. The downlink circuitry includes a signal transformation circuit to de-transform the received transformed RF downlink signals to generate non-transformed downlink signals and a frequency correction circuit to apply a frequency correction to the downlink signals to produce corrected downlink signals. The downlink circuitry wirelessly transmits the corrected downlink signals via a coverage antenna to user equipment in the service area.

Repeater system using umbrella base station

One embodiment is directed to a repeater system for use with a Fifth Generation (5G) New Radio (NR) base station. The repeater system includes repeater circuitry configured to switch between a downlink mode and an uplink mode. The repeater circuitry is configured to determine basic time-division duplexing (TDD) parameters for a 5G NR cell served by the 5G NR base station. The repeater circuitry is configured to determine timing of 5G NR time-division duplexing of the 5G NR cell based at least in part on correlating a waveform of a downlink signal with one or more of: a 5G NR Primary Synchronization Signal expected to be in the downlink signal as indicated by at least some of the basic TDD parameters and a 5G NR Secondary Synchronization Signal expected to be in the downlink signal as indicated by at least some of the basic TDD parameters.

Certain aspects are directed to an intermodulation detection sub-system. The intermodulation detection sub-system includes a test signal generation module, at least one intermodulation detection device, and a controller. The test signal generation module is integrated into a unit of a telecommunications system. The test signal generation module is configured to provide a test signal to a remote antenna unit of the telecommunications system. The intermodulation detection device is integrated into the telecommunications system. The intermodulation detection device is configured to detect intermodulation products generated by mixing a first signal component and a second signal component of the test signal. The controller is integrated into the unit. The controller is configured to control the test signal generation module and the at least one intermodulation detection device.

Certain aspects and features of the present disclosure relate to a validation sub-system for determining whether access points in a telecommunication system provide suitable performance for a specified configuration of the telecommunication system. For example, a wireless receiver can simultaneous receive beacon signals at a common frequency from multiple access points. Each beacon signal has a data sequence that is different than the other beacon signals. A processing device can determine, based on the data sequences received by the wireless receiver, channel responses for channels between the access points and the wireless receiver. The processing device can output, based on the channel responses, an indicator that the access points are suitable for a specified configuration of a telecommunication system for providing wireless coverage using the access points.

A telecommunications system may include a distortion cancellation subsystem for use with a circulator device coupling an antenna to a transmit path and a receive path. The distortion cancellation subsystem may include a correction circuit and a cancellation circuit. In some aspects, the correction circuit may include a processing device or adaptive filter to correct imperfections in transmit signal samples generated by directional couplers. The correction circuit may also include a summing device to remove receive signal components from the transmit signal samples. The cancellation circuit may receive the output signal of the correction circuit via an adaptive filter. The output of the adaptive filter may be summed with a receive signal to minimize distortion of the receive signal.

Certain aspects and aspects of the present invention are directed to a distributed antenna system having a downlink communication path, an uplink communication path, and a non-duplexer isolator sub-system. The downlink communication path can communicatively couple a transmit antenna to a base station. The uplink communication path can communicatively couple a receive antenna to the base station. In one aspect, the non-duplexer isolator sub-system can be electronically configured for isolating uplink signals traversing the uplink communication path from downlink signals. In another aspect, a non-duplexer isolator sub-system can be configurable in one or more mechanical steps selecting a frequency response. In another aspect, a non-duplexer isolator sub-system can include an active mitigation sub-system.

Antenna system having an antenna array with multiple sub-arrays, each having one or more antenna elements, is calibrated using a distributed calibration antenna element, such as a leaky coaxial cable, that spans across at least two and possibly all of the sub-arrays. To calibrate the transmit (TX) paths of the sub-arrays, TX calibration test signals are transmitted by the sub-arrays, captured by the distributed calibration element, and processed by a corresponding calibration radio. To calibrate the receive (RX) paths of the sub-arrays, an RX calibration test signal is generated by the calibration radio, transmitted by the distributed calibration element, captured by the sub-arrays, and processed by their corresponding radios. Cross-correlation between the calibration and captured signals is performed to derive the complex gain of each sub-array transmitter and receiver, which provides information for aligning the gain, phase, and delay of the different TX and RX paths of the antenna array.

Multi-element antenna calibration technique

A method and apparatus of mitigating multipath coupling interference in a wireless repeater systemincludes measuring an error signal E(z) in a signal path of the repeater which contains the desired communication signals and the multipath coupling interference and determining a cepstrum c[n] of the error signal E(z), wherein the cepstrum c[n] is reflective of the open-loop gain G(z) of the system. The method further includes extracting the impulse response of the open-loop gain G(z) from the cepstrum c[n] of the error signal E(z), calculating a plurality of cancellation filter coefficients using the extracted impulse response, and adaptively applying the plurality of filter coefficients to an adjustable filter to generate the cancellation signal necessary to mitigate the multipath coupling interference.

Canceling narrowband interfering signals in a distributed antenna system is provided. In one aspect, a cancellation sub-system includes a decimator module, a filter, an interpolator module, and a combiner module coupled to the uplink path and a reference path in parallel with the uplink path. The reference path includes the decimator module, the filter, and the interpolator module. The decimator module decimates a reference signal sampled from an uplink signal traversing an uplink path of the remote antenna unit. Each of the uplink signal and the reference signal includes a narrowband interfering signal component. The filter generates a cancellation signal from the reference signal by attenuating the reference signal outside a frequency band that includes the interfering signal component. The interpolator module interpolates the cancellation signal to a sampling rate of the uplink signal. The combiner module can subtract the cancellation signal from the uplink signal.

A signal repeating element for repeating a signal includes a housing, at least one transmit antenna element positioned on one side of the housing and at least one receive antenna element positioned on the same one side of the housing. Receiver and transmitter circuitry is coupled with respective ones of the receive and transmit antenna elements. Phase circuitry for affecting the phase of signals from the at least one receive antenna element and at least one transmit antenna element is coupled between the respective receive or transmit antenna element and the receiver or transmitter circuitry.
