Various methods and systems are provided for an oil filter system for a vehicle system. In one example, an oil filter system comprises a housing within which a plurality of oil filter elements are disposed and a frame supporting the housing, the frame including one or more mountings configured to support one or more vehicle sub-assemblies.

Various methods and systems are provided for an exhaust gas recirculation (EGR) EGR cooler for an engine system. In one example, the EGR cooler includes a first section with a first group of tubes adapted to flow exhaust gases, and also includes a first group of passages formed by exterior surfaces of the first group of tubes and adapted to flow coolant from a coolant source. The EGR cooler also includes a second section including a second group of tubes adapted to flow coolant from the coolant source, and a second group of passages formed by exterior surfaces of the second group of tubes and adapted to flow the exhaust gas from the first group of tubes.

Various methods and systems are provided for adjusting flow resistances in an engine cooling system. In one example, a method for an engine includes adjusting a first resistance of a radiator main return line to be greater than a second resistance of a sub-cooled return line in response to an engine speed below a threshold speed, the sub-cooled return line arranged in parallel with the radiator main return line in an engine cooling system.

Various embodiments for a thermal management system are provided. In one example, a thermal management system includes a coolant pump that provides coolant to a first cooling circuit and a second cooling circuit in parallel. The first cooling circuit includes an air-to-coolant radiator system and the second cooling circuit includes an engine coolant jacket. The thermal management system further comprises a fan and a cooling shutter for controlling a flow of air through the air-to-coolant radiator system.

Thermal management systems and methods related to controlling temperature of internal combustion engines are provided. In one embodiment, a thermal management system includes an air intake structure defining an air intake passage therethrough coupled to a plurality of cylinders in an engine, a multi-stage cooling assembly, positioned in the air intake passage, including an air-to-coolant intercooler for cooling intake air and an air-to-air heat exchanger for cooling intake air, an air-to-coolant radiator fluidly coupled with the air-to-coolant intercooler of the multi-stage cooling assembly, a first fan operable to provide air flow to the multi-stage cooling assembly and the air-to-coolant radiator, and a second fan operable to provide air flow to the air-to-coolant radiator.

Thermal management systems and methods

A resistive grid enclosure for a vehicle having a dynamic braking capability, the grid enclosure defining an air inlet, an air outlet, and an airflow path through the enclosure from the air inlet to the air outlet. A resistive grid disposed within the enclosure is cooled by air flowing through the airflow path from the air inlet to the air outlet. The airflow path is configured so that an inlet airflow is heated by absorbing heat from the resistive grid and directed toward the air outlet forming a heated outlet airflow. The airflow path is further configured to direct at least a portion of the heated outlet airflow into the air inlet to reduce blockage of the air inlet by ice or snow.

A system for cooling an engine on a vehicle without a coolant based intercooler and intermediate duct, the system including an air-to-oil radiator system configured to cool oil that flows through an engine, an air-to-air radiator system configured to cool air that flows through the engine and further configured to operate in conjunction with the air-to-oil radiator system to provide cool air for use with the air-to-oil radiator system, and a slow flow coolant radiator configured to cool a coolant provided to cool the engine and further provided to operate in conjunction with the air-to-oil radiator system. In a locomotive having a dynamic braking capability, a method for maintaining an airflow path to a resistive grid disposed within a resistive grid enclosure having an enclosure inlet and an enclosure outlet is provided, wherein the method includes generating an inlet airflow into the enclosure inlet, creating a heated inlet airflow by associating the inlet airflow with the resistive grid such that the inlet airflow absorbs heat generated by the resistive grid, directing the heated inlet airflow toward the enclosure outlet to generate a heated outlet airflow, redirecting at least a portion of the heated outlet airflow to be thermally associated with a structural portion of the enclosure inlet such that the temperature of the structural portion of the enclosure inlet is increased above a predetermined temperature to reduce blockage of the enclosure inlet by snow and recirculating the redirected heated outlet airflow with ambient air being drawn into the resistive grid enclosure.

A system, kit, and service method for exhaust gas recirculation cooling are described. In one example, a removable cooling system for an engine, the engine in a vehicle car body, the system comprising: a removable package including a first exhaust gas recirculation cooler, a second exhaust gas recirculation cooler, and a third exhaust gas recirculation cooler, the first, second, and third coolers coupled together in series, where the removable package is located at a top of the vehicle car body and where the removable package is removably coupled to the vehicle as a unit.

A method of operating an engine having exhaust gas recirculation from an exhaust manifold of the engine to an intake manifold of the engine, the engine in a locomotive or other vehicle car body, the engine further having an intake system turbocharger with an air-cooled intercooler, the method including cooling the exhaust gas recirculation via a first airflow generated by car body motion, cooling compressed engine induction air in the air-cooled intercooler via a second airflow, and cooling the exhaust gas recirculation via the second airflow.
