A skin status monitoring apparatus that includes one or more sensors for sensing the applied energy density to an operative site in real time based on one or more monitored variables is provided. Based on the sensed applied energy density, the applied power level of the cold plasma beam may be adjusted, such that, the applied energy density to the operative site remains within the beneficial range that achieves the desired physiological effect to the operative site. The skin status monitoring apparatus of the present disclosure may be coupled to a distal end of an electrosurgical device capable of generating cold plasma.

Skin status monitor and method thereof for electrosurgical apparatuses

An electrosurgical apparatus with a retractable blade for use in cold plasma applications, electrosurgical cutting and mechanical cutting is provided. The electrosurgical apparatus employs a tip of the retractable blade as a sharp conductive point to generate a plasma beam or discharge. When the blade is retracted within the electrosurgical apparatus, it is electrically energized while an inert gas flows over it, producing a cold plasma discharge. In the de-energized state, the blade is advanced and used as a traditional, mechanical surgical blade.

An electrosurgical apparatus for generating a plasma discharge beam is provided. In one aspect, the electrosurgical apparatus includes a first fluid flow housing, a second fluid flow housing, and an electrode. A first gas is provided to the distal end of the first fluid flow housing, where the electrode is energized to ionize the first gas and generate a plasma discharge beam. A second gas is provided to the distal end of the second fluid flow housing, where the distal end of the second fluid flow housing injects the second gas into the plasma discharge beam. In another aspect, the electrosurgical apparatus includes a single fluid flow housing having an external electrode and an internal electrode. In another aspect, the electrosurgical apparatus includes a transformer assembly having a plurality of serially-connected transformers.

Devices, systems and methods for enhancing physiological effectiveness of medical cold plasma discharges

The present disclosure is directed to an electrosurgical apparatus for generating plasma in electrosurgical applications. The electrosurgical apparatus includes an end effector disposed on a distal portion of a tube of the electrosurgical apparatus. The end effector mixes ambient air with an inert gas to increase the production of radical species. In one aspect of the present disclosure, the end effector includes a cylindrical augmenter disposed over a distal end of the tube with one or more tilted vanes disposed between the cylindrical augmenter and the tube. In another aspect of the present disclosure, the end effector includes one or more tilted vanes disposed on an inner surface of a wall of the distal end of the tube. In another aspect of the present disclosure, the end effector includes one or more advection apertures on the wall of the distal end of the tube.

An electrosurgical snare device is provided which uses a flow of inert gas to assist in the cutting and sealing process of tissue, while substantially reducing the formation of eschar and collateral tissue damage. The electrosurgical device includes a housing having a longitudinal axis; a support shaft attached to a distal end of the housing, and an end effector coupled to a distal end of the support shaft. The end effector includes a tube including a plurality of apertures and an electrically conducting spring disposed around the tube, where a spacing of the coils of the spring coincides with a spacing of the plurality of apertures, wherein a gas assisted electrosurgical effect is formed at each of the plurality of apertures when an inert gas flows through the tube and the spring is energized. The tube may be configured as a loop or snare.

A multi-mode electrosurgical apparatus for use in cold plasma applications, electrosurgical cutting, electrosurgical coagulation and mechanical cutting is provided. The electrosurgical apparatus includes a housing having a passage extending therethrough, an electrically conducting tube being disposed in the passage of the housing; an insulating outer tube disposed around the electrically conducting tube coupled to the housing, the electrically conducting tube being movable along a longitudinal axis of the housing and outer tube; an electrically conducting blade coupled to the distal end of the electrically conducting tube, and a transformer assembly disposed on a proximal end of the housing, the transformer assembly including a first transformer and a first switch for selectively coupling the first transformer and an external second transformer to the electrically conducting tube for providing electrosurgical energy thereto.

Multi-mode electrosurgical apparatus

An electrosurgical apparatus including an automatic applicator identifier used to communicate between an applicator and a generator unit, automatically presetting various values, is provided. These values may be stored in a one-wire serial memory storage device located in the applicator or connector coupled to the applicator. Communication from the applicator to the generator unit of these values is affected by a one-wire serial communication protocol. This information can be transferred over a direct electrical path through the connector that attaches that applicator to the generator unit, or instead by a wireless link.

System and method for identifying and controlling an electrosurgical apparatus

Systems and methods for discriminating between various gases, e.g., argon and helium, for enhanced safety of medical devices are provided. The present disclosure may take the form of a dedicated-use embodiment where a specific gas, helium for example, is expected, and an enabling or 'Go' signal is issued when that gas is detected, or an inhibitory or 'No-Go' signal when a gas is present that is not identified as helium. Alternately, a control line or input command can be used to select between helium and argon as the expected gas and then issue the appropriate &#x201c;Go/No-Go&#x201d; signal, depending on which gas is identified.

Systems and methods of discriminating between argon and helium gases for enhanced safety of medical devices

The present disclosure relates to an electrosurgical apparatus to generate a dual plasma stream to perform electrosurgery on a surgical site on a patient. The apparatus and method of the present disclosure generates a hot gas jet to a surgical site by generating two plasma beams that are electrically up to 180 degrees out of phase from each other. Since each beam uses the other beam to establish plasma currents at a load, the combined dual plasma stream can be used on non-conductive surfaces, e.g., a tissue at the surgical site. Furthermore, by applying different flow rates to the plasma beams, various scanning effects by the hot gas jet can be achieved.

An electrosurgical system to generate a pulsed plasma stream and method thereof are provided. The system includes an electrosurgical generator coupled to an electrical power source to supply power for the electrosurgical system; a plasma generator including a noble gas conduit and an electrode disposed with the noble gas conduit, the electrode operatively coupled to the electrosurgical generator to selectively receive electrical energy therefrom such that the electrode at least partially ionizes a carrier gas feed to the noble gas conduit to create a plasma discharge; and a flow controller coupled to the noble gas conduit to pulse the flow of the carrier gas from a gas source to the noble gas conduit such that when the electrode is energized pulses of plasma discharge are generated at the surgical site.

Electrosurgical system to generate a pulsed plasma stream and method thereof

A cold plasma jet hand sanitizer and method of use are provided. A pair of opposing two-dimensional arrays of atmospheric pressure cold plasma jets is used to create a sterilizing volume. Any object placed into that volume will have its surface sterilized. The opposing arrays of plasma jets are operated electrically 180 degrees out of phase so that the opposing arrays of plasma jets essentially fire into each other in the absence of an intervening object, or directly impinge on the surface of an intervening object.
