A jarring tool can include a longitudinally displaceable piston, a first fluid chamber having a volume that decreases in response to displacement of the piston, a flow controller that controls flow of fluid between the first fluid chamber and a second fluid chamber, and a plug seat secured to the piston. A method of applying a jarring force can include applying a pressure differential across a plug in a jarring tool, the plug restricting flow from a first flow passage section to a second flow passage section, then increasing a flow rate of fluid from the first flow passage section. Another jarring tool can include an outer housing with a longitudinal flow passage and seal surfaces at opposite ends of the outer housing, and a flow obstruction, fluid flow through the flow passage being increased in response to application of a pressure differential across the obstruction.

Jarring tool and method of use

A system for use with a subterranean well can include a deployment apparatus configured to deploy one or more plugging devices into a fluid flow. The plugging devices are conveyed into the well by the fluid flow. The deployment apparatus can include multiple queues, different numbers of the plugging devices being contained in respective different ones of the queues. A method of deploying plugging devices can include connecting multiple queues of the plugging devices to a conduit, and deploying the plugging devices from a selected combination of the queues into the conduit. In another system, each of the plugging devices may include a body, and lines or fibers extending outwardly from the body.

A method of dislodging a tubular string or well equipment connected to the tubular string can include connecting a dislodging tool in the tubular string, so that a flow passage of the dislodging tool extends through the tubular string, deploying a plug into the dislodging tool, applying a pressure differential across the plug, thereby displacing the plug through a seat of the dislodging tool, and dislodging the tubular string or the component in response to the displacing. A dislodging system can include a dislodging tool connected as part of a tubular string, the dislodging tool including a flow passage and a seat configured to sealingly engage a plug deployed into the tubular string, and at least one of a jarring force, load, impact, shock wave, elastic strain release and pressure pulse being generated in the tubular string in response to displacement of the plug through the seat.

Dislodging tools, systems and methods for use with a subterranean well

A system can include a disconnect tool connected as part of a tubular string, the disconnect tool including an outer housing, and an inner mandrel in the outer housing, in which an abrasive slurry is directed to flow through the tubular string and from the inner mandrel to an annulus between the inner mandrel and the outer housing, and the abrasive slurry erodes through the outer housing. A method can include installing a tubular string in a well, then deploying a disconnect assembly into the tubular string, and flowing an abrasive slurry through the disconnect assembly, thereby parting the tubular string. A disconnect tool can include a rotational flow structure configured to induce rotational flow, and an inner diameter decrease downstream of the rotational flow structure.

A frac valve can include an outer housing with at least one port which provides for fluid communication between an interior and an exterior of the outer housing, and a sleeve releasably secured against displacement between a closed position in which the sleeve blocks flow through the port and an open position in which flow through the port is permitted. The sleeve may be press-fit in the outer housing as a result of the displacement. A method of operating a frac valve can include connecting the frac valve in a tubular string, and displacing a sleeve of the frac valve between closed and open positions. The displacing step can include deforming the sleeve and/or an outer housing of the frac valve, thereby preventing relative rotation between the sleeve and the outer housing.

A plugging device can include a body configured to engage and substantially block flow through a passageway, and the body including a winding of at least one of fiber, line, rope, tube, filament, film, fabric, mesh and weave. A method of plugging a passageway can include releasing a plugging device into a fluid flow, thereby causing the plugging device to be carried by the fluid flow to the passageway, the plugging device including a body formed with at least one winding, and the plugging device engaging the passageway and thereby blocking the passageway. A well system can include a plugging device conveyed through a tubular string by fluid flow in the well, the plugging device including a body configured to engage and resist extrusion through a passageway in the well, the body including a winding, and in which the winding substantially blocks the fluid flow through the passageway.

An electric coupling for two electric circuits in a well includes an electric contact and a contact receiver connected to respective ones of the circuits so that a contact/receiver pair is formed when the contact and receiver are moved together The receiver is sealed by a sealing member. The sealing member is disposed so that it is penetrated by the contact when the contact and receiver are moved together. A coupling including two such pairs is preferably used to connect two electric wires in the well to form a current conductive loop linking two electric coils. One of the coils is adapted to be moved in the well relative to the other coil which is adapted to be fixed in the well. In a preferred embodiment, one coil is on a wireline tool and the other coil is on a downhole tool. The current conductive path established across an intervening space between the tools is electrically insulated from the bodies of the tools and preferably has a resistance sufficiently low that the current conductive path is not effectively short-circuited by fluid in the intervening space which the path crosses.
