Systems and methods for removing material, e.g., linters, from seeds, e.g., ginned cottonseeds, are provided. The systems and methods involve rotating the seeds in a rotatable drum having a plurality of longitudinal brushes. The centrifugal force created by the rotation of the drum and the plurality of longitudinal brushes urge the seeds against an interior surface of the drum that is lined with a brush insert. In this way, work is performed that removes the material from the exterior of the seeds. The material is removed using reduced pressure and the processed seeds are removed. The system may include a brush insert that is easily removed from the rotatable drum. Other systems and methods are disclosed.

The lint cleaning system is a modified jet-type lint cleaner that includes a supplemental air control vane. The supplemental air control vane (among other things) segregates discharged foreign materials from incoming supplemental air so that the incoming supplemental air is not contaminated by the discharged materials. The current system also enables a user to more effectively control the volume and the pathway of supplemental air entering the cleaner and thereby optimize the function of the air cleaner.

The method is constituted of: providing a time varying signal at comprising frequency content over a range of frequencies; transducing the provided signal so as to interact with the target material; receiving the provided time varying signal after interaction with the target material; mixing the received time varying signal with a portion of the provided time varying signal; determining the propagation delay associated with the target material of the received provided time varying signal at each of a plurality of frequencies within the range of frequencies; and determining at least one property of the target material responsive to the determined propagation delay at each of the plurality of frequencies.

A novel method for the treatment of cotton byproducts to yield value-added products while reducing the wear on processing equipment is described. In this process, cotton byproducts or waste are ground and compacted, and treated with a gellable polysaccharide. The polysaccharide is gelatinized, either before or concurrent with the grinding and compaction of the cotton byproducts. The resultant byproducts exhibit significantly reduced abrasiveness, greatly reducing the wear on equipment.
