An optical rotary joint having a housing, a hollow shaft, a bevel gear, a prism and two collimators. The housing includes two sections, each holding a collimator and separated by a gap in an axial direction from each other and rotatable against each other and around the center axis. The hollow shaft is aligned with the center axis, and has two ends extending into the housing sections. The housing sections are supported via bearings by the hollow shaft. The hollow shaft further contains a prism holder with a Dove prism. The bevel gear is located in the gap between the housing sections and includes two wheels at the housing sections in mesh with two third wheels, which have an axis oriented radially to the center axis and fixedly attached to the hollow shaft, such that a rotation of the housing sections against each other results in a rotation of the hollow shaft with half of the angular speed.

Compact multichannel optical rotary joint

A Multichannel Fiber Optic Rotary Joint (FORJ) has a Dove prism as a derotating optical element, wherein the Dove prism has a multiwavelength achromatic metasurface coating on the input and output face. Such a Multichannel FORJ has the advantage that its transmission properties include consistently low attenuation over a rotation angle and a high-return loss over a broad wavelength range, e.g. the whole frequency band used for telecommunications. A method for fabricating the same.

Multichannel fiber optic rotary joint (FORJ) having an achromatic metasurface

An optical rotating data transmission device for polarization-maintaining transmission of linearly polarized light includes at least one first collimator for coupling on first light-waveguides, and also a second collimator for coupling on second light-waveguides, the second collimator being supported to be rotatable relative to the first collimator about a rotation axis. At least two &#x3bb;/4 plates for converting linear polarization to circular polarization and vice-versa are provided in between a plate for attaching optical fibers and a micro lens system.

Polarization maintaining optical rotary joint

A collimator system comprises a micro lens array and a fiber array. The fiber array has a substrate with a plurality of holes for holding a plurality of optical fibers. The fibers are glued into the holes. Before gluing, each of the fibers is positioned against the same side of a corresponding hole resulting in all fibers being located substantially equally with respect to the holes. The lens array is mounted with an offset to the fiber array resulting in alignment of the fibers and the lenses.

Precision two-dimensional fiber-collimator-array

A fiber array for receiving a plurality of light-guiding fibers has a substrate with V grooves for guiding light-guiding fibers. These are fixed inside the V grooves by covers. In order to achieve a better utilization of space, the light-guiding fibers are disposed in two planes. To this end, first fibers in V grooves are fixed on the surface of the substrate in one plane. Second fibers are fixed by V grooves in recesses between the first fibers in a second parallel plane. Here a processing of the substrate may be done without changing clamping or re-clamping of the substrate. Particularly small production tolerances can be achieved by this means.

Dual row optical fiber array

A fiber optic rotary joint has at least one fiber optic collimator. The fiber optic collimator has a plurality of lenses on a micro lens array. Furthermore a plurality of optical fibers are attached to the micro lens array. The fibers are further fixed by a fiber support. A spacer is provided between the micro lens array and the fiber support, setting the micro lens array and the fiber support apart from each other. The optical fibers have between the micro lens array and the fiber support a excess length greater than the distance between the micro lens array and the fiber support. This results in a slight bending of the fibers between the micro lens array and the fiber support. A temperature related extension of parts of the fiber optic rotary joint can be compensated by the excess length and does not lead to mechanical tension on the fibers.

Fiber optic rotary joint with extended temperature range

According to one embodiment, an optical rotary joint comprises a first collimator arrangement for coupling-on first light-waveguides, and a second collimator arrangement for coupling-on second light-waveguides, with the latter being rotatably supported relative to the first collimator arrangement about a rotation axis. A Dove prism is provided between the first and second collimator arrangements as a derotating element. The first and second collimator arrangements have at least one micro-lens array on which light-waveguides with associated ferrules are disposed. In order to avoid tensile forces from arising in the arrangement, or as a result of individual ferrules becoming interconnected by an applied adhesive, trenches, barriers, or also coatings are provided between the individual ferrules.

Lens arrangement for optical rotary joints

An optical rotary joint includes a first collimator arrangement for coupling on first light-waveguides, and a second collimator arrangement for coupling on second light-waveguides, with the second collimator arrangement being supported to be rotatable relative to the first collimator arrangement about a rotation axis. The collimator arrangements include collimators with an actuator that is adjustable along two axes. A control unit controls the actuators so that mechanical tolerances are compensated, and optical transmission loss between the collimator arrangements is minimal.

Optical rotary joint with active movement compensation

In a lens system, such as for use in optical rotary joints, obliquely tilted cavities are inserted in a light path between light-waveguides and lenses to be coupled thereto in order to compensate lateral displacements between the light waveguides and the lenses. The cavities are filled with an optical medium having a predetermined refractive index in order to achieve a parallel displacement of a light-ray path, so that the ray path passes centrally through the lenses.

Lens system with position adjustment

An optical rotary joint comprises a first collimator arrangement for coupling-on first light-waveguides, and a second collimator arrangement for coupling-on second light waveguides, with the second collimator arrangement being supported to be rotatable relative to the first collimator arrangement about a rotation axis. At least one derotating optical element is provided in the light path between the first collimator arrangement and the second collimator arrangement. At least one collimator arrangement comprises a rod-shaped lens that is fastened on a support plate so that the axis of the lens is tilted at a given angle relative to the rotation axis of the rotary joint.

Multi-channel optical rotary coupling of low reflectance

A lens system includes a body member holding at least one micro lens array. The micro lens array has a first surface with a plurality of micro lenses arranged in a row and a second surface opposing the first surface. The second surface is under an angle towards the first surface. Furthermore the lens system comprises either: (i) a plurality of ferrules enclosing end-portions of light waveguides, or (ii) a plurality of light waveguides without ferrules, wherein the ferrules or light waveguides are adhesively fastened in a spaced relationship from each other to the second surface of the micro lens array preferably by means of an adhesive, by bonding or by welding.

Two dimensional fiber collimator array with high return loss

An optical rotating data transmission device comprises a first collimator arrangement for coupling-on first light-waveguides, and a second collimator arrangement for coupling-on second light-waveguides, which is supported to be rotatable relative to the first collimator arrangement about a rotation axis. A Dove prism is provided between the collimator arrangements as a derotating element. Furthermore, the collimator arrangements pre provided with adapter elements having rotationally symmetrical conical faces. Prism adapter elements are disposed on the end faces of the Dove prism and have prism adapter elements on the sides facing the collimator arrangements. These also have rotationally symmetrical conical faces with a surface configuration that is inverse to that of the adapter elements of the collimator arrangements.

An optical rotary joint comprises a first collimator arrangement for coupling-on first light-waveguides and a second collimator arrangement for coupling-on second light-waveguides, with the second collimator arrangement being supported to be rotatable relative to the first collimator arrangement about a rotation axis. An intermediate layer is provided on at least one boundary face of an optical constituent part to a surrounding medium, which the intermediate layer comprises a nano-structure having a mean refractive index lying between a refractive index of a material of the optical constituent part and a refractive index of the medium of the surroundings.

Optical rotary joint with high return loss

The invention relates to a method for adjusting an optical rotating data transmission device having two units that are rotatable with respect to each other about a rotation axis, and that each have a coaxial collimator for coupling light in or out, and relates also to an optical rotating data transmission device that is adjustable by means of the method. For an adjustment, a deviation of a light beam from the rotation axis is determined by means of two detectors at different distances, and from this a positional deviation and also a tilt of the light beam is calculated and suitably compensated.

Apparatus and method for adjusting an optical rotating data transmission device

An optical rotating data transmission device comprises a first collimator arrangement for coupling-on first optical waveguides, a second collimator arrangement for coupling-on second optical waveguides, which is supported to be rotatable relative to the first collimator arrangement about a rotation axis, and a derotating element such as a Dove prism in a light path between the collimator arrangements. At least one collimator arrangement comprises a deflecting element which deflects light entering the device from optical waveguides positioned at an angle to the direction of the rotation axis to travel along the direction of the rotation axis, or deflects light traveling along the direction of the rotation axis to exit the device at an angle to the rotation axis towards optical waveguides.
