Cordierite-forming batch mixtures including one or more non-oxide inorganic source materials or materials as pore-formers are provided. Non-oxide inorganic materials, such a non-oxide silicon material that includes at least one of silicon carbide, silicon, or silicon nitride, may be added to cordierite-forming batch mixtures as at least a partial replacement for conventional inorganic pore-formers. Non-oxide inorganic pore-formers may provide an increase in pore volume while having a reduced coefficient of thermal expansion impact as compared with conventional pore-formers. Cordierite-forming mixtures as disclosed herein may additionally include rare-earth catalysts and alkaline-earth materials that may enhance the pore-forming effect of non-oxide inorganic pore-formers without significant exothermic reactions or the production of emissions that may require additional processing treatments.

Composition for improved manufacture of substrates

A method for making a ceramic body, the method including: mixing inorganic ceramic-forming ingredients to form a batch; adding a rapidly hydratable cellulosic binder and a liquid vehicle to the batch and further mixing to form a plasticized mixture; extruding the plasticized mixture to form a green body. The green body can then be heated sufficiently to produce a predominant ceramic phase, thereby transforming the green body into the ceramic body.

A precursor batch composition that can be used to make porous ceramic articles is provided. The batch composition includes a cellulose-based polymer and, in particular, a methylcellulose showing a specified micro-calorimetry thermal response fingerprint. The methylcellulose can also have a cloud point above a specified temperature.

Ceramic compositions for increased batch feed rate

A precursor batch composition that can be used to make porous ceramic articles is provided. In addition to a cellulosic binder and an aqueous solvent, the batch composition includes a polysaccharide gum. The batch composition may optionally include a linear water soluble polymer having a molecular weight of at least one million Daltons.
