A method employing an array of antenna elements and a plurality of transceivers, each including (1) a transmitter chain; (2) a receiver chain; and (3) a duplexer having an input electrically connected to the transmitter chain, an output electrically connected to the receiver chain, and a duplexed port electrically connected to a different antenna element, the method involving: identifying among the plurality of transceivers a first and second subsets of transceivers such that together the first and second subsets of transceivers constitute all of the transceivers among the plurality of transceivers; for each transceiver within the first subset of transceivers, but not for the transceivers within the second subset of transceivers, introducing a &#x3a6; degree phase shift between the duplexed port of the duplexer and the antenna element to which the duplexed port is electrically connected, wherein &#x3a6;=&#x2212;(2n+1)90&#xb0;, and wherein n is an integer.

Transmitter signal cancellation in phased array receivers

A method of using a phased array antenna system to communicate with a mobile user equipment (UE), the method involving: repeatedly switching between a downlink (DL) transmission time period and an uplink (UL) transmission time period; during the DL transmission time period, simultaneously generating a DL transmit beam and a DL receive beam, wherein the DL transmit beam during the DL transmission time periods has a first DL transmit beam pattern; and during the UL transmission time period, simultaneously generating a DL transmit beam and a DL receive beam, wherein the DL transmit beam during the UL transmission time period has a second DL transmit beam pattern and wherein the second DL transmit beam pattern during the UL transmission time period is different from the first DL transmit beam pattern during the DL transmission time period.

A method involving an antenna array for wirelessly transmitting information carried by a source signal stream that includes a plurality of individual transmit signal streams, the method involving: mapping the plurality of transmit signal streams to a plurality of individual beam signal streams, wherein at least one of the beam signal streams of the plurality of beam signal streams is a combination of multiple transmit signal streams of the plurality of transmit signal streams; using the antenna array to generate a plurality of transmit beams; and sending each beam signal stream of the plurality of beam signal streams over a different transmit beam of the plurality of transmit beams.

A method of providing cellular coverage involving: using an antenna system including S-dimensional, downward tilting phased array panels arranged about a common vertical axis, wherein with the S panels are organized into a plurality of groups, each of which includes L adjacent panels; generating a first plurality of narrow beams covering a first plurality of cells forming an outer ring of cellular coverage; and generating a second plurality of narrow beams covering a second plurality of cells forming an inner ring of coverage, wherein generating the first plurality of narrow beams involves, with each panel, generating N narrow beams of the first plurality of narrow beams; and wherein generating the second plurality of narrow beams involves, with each group of panels, generating M narrow beams of the second plurality of narrow beams.

A method of testing a phased array antenna that includes a plurality of antenna element pairs, each antenna element pair of the plurality of antenna element pairs including a first antenna element and a second antenna element, the method including: for each antenna element pair of the plurality of antenna element pairs, performing a first cross element gain measurement from the first antenna element to the second antenna element of that antenna element pair; and determining whether there is a problem associated with the phased array antenna by examining the first cross element gain measurements for the plurality of antenna element pairs.

A method for transmitting a signal in a wireless communications network includes calculating, by a network element, first and second average powers. The first average power is associated with a first time period of a downlink transmission between a transmitter associated with the network element and at least one user, and the second average power is associated with a second time period of the downlink transmission. The method includes transmitting, by the transmitter, the signal at one of a rated transmission power and a boosted transmission power based on a first threshold value associated with the first average power and a second threshold value associated with the second average power. The rated transmission power is less than or equal to a long-term average power limit associated with a power amplifier of the transmitter, and the boosted transmission is greater than the rated power.

Methods and devices for boosting transmission power of a signal in a wireless communications system

A wireless communication device includes more than one radio. A lossless switching module allows for selectively using one of the radios in a standby mode. The switching module allows for switching in the standby radio in the event that another radio fails without introducing any loss. In disclosed examples, switching module inputs coupled with inactive or failed radio output ports are coupled to an impedance corresponding to the associated radio. Disclosed examples are also useful for combining the outputs of more than one radio under selected circumstances.

Locating mobile stations used for wireless communications even when the mobile station is within a building includes determining whether at least one indicator associated with a signal used by the mobile station identifies a single, known building location. Example types of indicators include a base station and sector identifier of a base station sector dedicated to a particular building, a delay associated with a radio frequency signal used by the mobile station when communicating from a particular building location or a combination of cell codes reported by a mobile station when it is within a particular building location. One or more of such indicators provides an indication of a building location from which the mobile station has placed a call. That building location can then be used as the determined mobile station location.

In a method for generating pilot beacons for hard handoff over a border from a first environment to a second environment, the two environments using spread spectrum technology, a RF pilot signal may be received at an operational frequency used in at least the second environment. The RF signal may be downconverted to an IF pilot signal, filtered and then upconverted to a first reproduced RF pilot signal. The first reproduced RF pilot signal may be at a operational frequency used in a first environment, and may represent a pilot beacon for hard handoff between the first and second environments. The method and arrangement may be configured to receive a pilot beacon from one environment and to generate N pilot beacons, in that one environment, for up to N different operational frequencies used in another environment from which a mobile user is transiting, for hard handoff between the environments.

Method and arrangement for generating pilot beacons in wireless communication systems

The input (and output) power of a multi-carrier amplifier can be controlled to allow the amplifier to operate at high RF power levels and still remain within a power rating profile. The amplifier (or amplifiers) power is controlled using an aggregate scaling factor. The aggregate scaling factor is generated from a plurality of amplifier scaling factors. Each amplifier scaling factor is generated based on a comparison of a time-averaged total power and a corresponding threshold.

Methods and devices for controlling RF, multi-carrier amplifier signal power

A dual mode transmitter/receiver adds two-way radio functionality to a frequency division duplex mobile phone. The dual mode transmitter/receiver allows short-range and low-power communication between similarly equipped phones. In the two-way radio mode, the dual mode mobile phone transmits and receives at a frequency between the normal mobile transmit and receive frequency bands so that a number of transmitter/receiver components are utilized for both normal and two-way radio communication.

An RF coupler incorporating a pair of branch circuits which combine first and second input signals supplied at the same impedance level, amplitude and phase into an output signal at the same impedance level, twice the amplitude and phase shifted with respect to the input signals when both input signals are present, and which, if only one of the input signals is present, passes that input signal through its branch circuit to the output without loss, while terminating the branch circuit associated with the absent input signal with an equal impedance.

Intelligent RF combiner

A processor monitors the real time forward link power utilization in a base station, and a controller regulates the real time forward link power utilization in the base station. The processor and controller operate in a feedback configuration to maintain call quality and prevent damage to the base station. The processor determines real time forward link power utilization on a per frame basis by taking samples at a per chip rate within each frame. The forward link power is then obtained by taking the mean of the samples.
