A polymer blend comprising a high density polyethylene and a surface enhancing polymer is provided. The surface enhancing polymer may be an elastomer such as an ethylene propylene diene monomer terpolymer. The polymer blend may be fabricated into articles such as a film or a flexible overpouch for storing, and transporting medical components. Overpouch films made from the blend advantageously do not wrinkle or deform medical components contained therein when the overpouch&#x2014;medical component combination is autoclaved.

Multiple layer structures comprising one or more poly(vinylidene chloride) layers and containers made from the multiple layer structures are provided. In a general embodiment, the present disclosure provides a multiple layer structure comprising one or more PVDC layers comprising a component selected from the group consisting of a poly(vinylidene chloride), a poly(vinylidene chloride) copolymer, and combinations thereof. The multiple layer structure further comprises one or more tie layers attached to the PVDC layer. The tie layer comprises a component selected from the group consisting of (a) polyether polyester copolymers, (b) polyurethanes having a melting temperature above about 121&#xb0; C., (c) a blend comprising a polyamide and an ethylene copolymer containing an amine reactive functional group, and combinations thereof.

Multiple layer structures comprising a poly (vinylidene chloride) layer

The present invention provides a receptacle () for a therapeutic fluid susceptible to deterioration on exposure to a gas such as oxygen or carbon dioxide. The receptacle () has walls of sheet material each including at least one layer forming a barrier essentially impermeable to such gas, and a seal sealing the walls together in a region thereof. A transfer tube () is sealed in the seal having a proximal end in the receptacle (), a distal end accessible from outside the receptacle (), a flow passage () extending between said proximal and distal ends, and a closure () blocking flow through the flow passage () adapted to be pierced by a tubular needle for transfer of therapeutic through the needle. The transfer tube () and closure () are essentially impermeable to said gas.

Multiple layer polymeric structure

The present invention provides a receptacle for a therapeutic fluid susceptible to deterioration on exposure to a gas such as oxygen or carbon dioxide. In particular, polymeric compositions comprising a heat resistant polymer; a radio frequency ('RF') susceptible polymer; a compatibilizing polymer; the composition having physical properties within a range a&#x3c;40,000 psi; b&#x3e;=70%; c&#x3c;30%; d&#x3e;1.0; e&#x3c;0.1%; f&#x3c;0.1%; g&#x3e;=0.05; h&#x3c;=60%; i=0; wherein: a is the mechanical modulus of the composition measured according to ASTM D-882; b is the percent recovery in length of the composition after an initial 20% deformation; c is the optical haze of the composition being 9 mils in thickness according to ASTM D-1003; d is the loss tangent of the composition at 1 Hz measured at melt processing temperatures; e is the elemental halogen content by weight of the composition; f is the low molecular weight water soluble fraction of the composition; g is the dielectric loss between 1 and 60 MHz and over temperatures of 25 to 250&#xb0; C. of the composition; h sample creep measured at 121&#xb0; C. for a 1 inch strip of the composition under 27 psi loading; and, i indicates the composition exhibits no strain whitening after being strained at moderate speeds of about 20 inches (50 cm) per minute to about 100% elongation (twice the original length) and the presence of strain whitening (indicated by 1) or lack thereof (indicated by 0) is noted.

Polymeric compositions for medical packaging and devices

The present invention provides a multiple layer thermoplastic structure of a (1) skin layer selected from the group consisting of polypropylene, ethylene homopolymers having a density of from about 0.930 g/cc to about 0.960 g/cc, and ethylene homopolymers having a density of from about 0.930 g/cc to about 0.960 g/cc blended with an ethylene and a-olefin copolymers having a density less than about 0.930 g/cc, the skin layer having a thickness of greater than about 3.0 mils; (2) a radio frequency susceptible layer adhered to the skin layer, the radio frequency susceptible layer having a dielectric loss greater than 0.05 at 1-60 MHz and at temperatures of ambient to 250&deg; C., the radio frequency susceptible layer having: (a) a first polyolefin selected from the group consisting of polypropylene and polypropylene copolymers, (b) a second polyolefin selected from the group consisting of ethylene copolymers, ultra-low density polyethylene, polybutene, and butene ethylene copolymers; (c) a radio frequency susceptible polymer selected from the group consisting of (i) ethylene copolymers having 50-85% ethylene content with comonomers selected from a first group consisting of acrylic acid, methacrylic acid, ester derivatives of acrylic acid with alcohols having 1-10 carbons, ester derivatives of methacrylic acid with alcohols having 1-10 carbons, vinyl acetate, and vinyl alcohol (ii) homopolymers and copolymers containing at least one segment of urethanes, esters, ureas, imides, sulfones, and amides, and (d) a compatibilizing agent of a styrene and hydrocarbon copolymer; wherein the structure when fabricated into a 50 ml container has a water vapor transmission rate of less than 8% by weight after the container has been autoclaved at 121&deg; C. for 20 minutes and stored for 90 days in an environmentally regulated compartment having 15% relative humidity at 40&deg; C.
