An Orthogonal Frequency Division Multiplexer (OFDM) transmitter and receiver apparatus consistent with certain embodiments of the present invention receives data to be transmitted and maps () a first portion of the data to a first polarization state and a second portion of the data to a second polarization state. A first transmitter () transmits the first portion of the data as a set of first OFDM subcarriers using an antenna () exhibiting a first polarization. A second transmitter () transmits the second portion of the data as a set of second OFDM subcarriers using an antenna () exhibiting a second polarization, wherein the first polarization is orthogonal to the second polarization. A receiver apparatus uses a first antenna () exhibiting the first polarization and a second antenna () exhibiting the second polarization. A first OFDM receiver () receives a first set of polarized OFDM subcarriers from the first antenna () while a second OFDM receiver () receives a second set of polarized OFDM subcarriers from the second antenna (). A decoder () decodes the first and second sets of OFDM subcarriers and combines them into a stream of data.

Enhanced OFDM by use of alternating polarization states

A technique is used in a wideband wireless communication system (). In some embodiments available channels are determined () and one is selected () for assignment to each of a set of communication units based on a relative frequency path loss for each available channel. In some embodiments a communication unit is assigned () a channel selected from among available channels and a relative signal loss parameter of the communication unit, such as transmit power, is adjusted (), based on a relative frequency path loss determined from the channel frequency of the assigned channel. In other embodiments, transmit information is split () into a plurality of data streams, each characterized by an associated relative signaling sensitivity, and each data stream is assigned () to one of a plurality of the transmit channels, wherein data streams are assigned channels of decreasing channel frequencies in order of decreasing associated relative signaling sensitivities of the data streams.

Method and communication unit for use in a wideband wireless communications system

Communication systems include a transmitter that modulates a radio signal transmitted from two differently polarized antennas during a state time in which a wave state of the radio signal conveys information and is based on one or more polarization states selected from a constellation of polarization states comprising at least three polarization states. The communication system includes a receiver that intercepts the radio signal by two differently polarized antennas during the state time, and demodulates the signal. The polarization states may identify user devices or may quantify a portion of the information intended for a user device.

Polarization state techniques for wireless communications

An orthogonal frequency division multiplexing (OFDM) transmitter method, consistent with certain embodiments of the present invention arranges OFDM data symbols representing data bits for transmission in a packet. A prescribed pattern of OFDM data symbols are removed () and replaced () with pilot symbols. The packet is then transmitted () to an OFDM receiver that receives the packet () and determines a channel correction factor from the pilot pattern. The receiver then estimates a plurality of channel correction factors, one for each of the plurality of OFDM symbols representing data () and uses these correction factors to correct the OFDM symbols representing data (). Arbitrary data are then inserted in place of the pilot symbols (). The OFDM symbols representing data along with the arbitrary data are then decoded using an error correction decoder that corrects the errors induced by substitution of the pilot symbols for data symbols ().

An automatic frequency control is implemented in a selective call receiver (100) having a controllable frequency synthesizer (203). A temperature sensor (206) with substantial thermal coupling to the frequency reference element (205) produces a temperature signal representative of an operating temperature associated with the frequency reference element. The temperature signal is coupled to a controller (105) that operates to execute a microcode program implementing the automatic frequency control. Responsive to the temperature signal and at least one set of parameters representing a predetermined temperature versus frequency characteristic of the frequency reference element, a correction factor is generated and programmed in the frequency synthesizer (203). The correction factor corrects the output frequency to reflect a frequency error of substantially zero parts per million with respect to a desired operating frequency.

The network interface (215) supports at least one data link transport protocol for communicating at least a portion of the least one selective call message between the radio data interface device (201) and the at least one messaging subscriber (202, 202', 202').

A selective call receiver includes a receiver (103), a controller (105), and a display (113) for presenting a recovered source document. The receiver (103) provides a received paging message that was generated from the facsimile message of the original source document (208). The received paging message is interpreted and decoded by the controller (105). Using the display (113), a decoded scan line compressed document (1101) is presented in a format that substantially resembles the facsimile message of the original source document (1100).

A correlator (109) compares the recovered address signal with a predetermined address and generates an address detection, indicating selection of the peripheral. A PCMCIA memory only interface (119) communicates notification of address detection to the electronic information processing device (200), and in response to a message read command received from the electronic information processing device (200), the microcontroller (105) configures the Personal Computer Memory Card Interface Association (PCMCIA) interface (119) to permit the electronic information processing device (200) to read the message from the peripheral (100).

An electronic code plug programming apparatus and operating method that automatically recognizes and configures a radio frequency communication device without reference to a prestored signal in the radio frequency communication device. The programming apparatus uses a communication interface operating in either a first or second configuration using first and second signal sets, respectively. The first configuration and signal set allows communication with a non-microprocessor based radio frequency communication device while the second configuration and signal set allows communication with a microprocessor based radio frequency communication device. In response to the success or failure of a direct code plug read request communicated to an undetermined radio frequency communication device, a controller recognizes whether the device is microprocessor based without reference to a prestored signal therein and programs the device, configuring operational parameters according to its recognized capabilities.

A communication receiver includes a mixer (306) for converting a received signal to a first signal and a detector (320) for recovering an information signal from the first signal such that the information signal has at least two states representing at least two spectral positions of the first signal. A memory (324) stores at least one control configuration for the mixer (306). A controller (210) coupled to the memory (324) controls the mixer (306) and is responsive to the at least two information signal states being within an operating range of the detector (320). The controller (210) adjusts the at least two spectral positions of the first signal while maintaining the at least two spectral positions of the first signal within an operating region of the detector (320).
