A marine engine comprises a powerhead having an engine block, a cylinder head and a crankcase containing a crankshaft. Operation of the marine engine causes rotation of the crankshaft. A crankcase cover encloses the crankshaft in the crankcase. A supercharger is on the crankcase cover, the supercharger being configured to provide charge air for combustion in the powerhead. The supercharger comprises a charge air outlet for conveying charge air from the supercharger for combustion in the powerhead, the charge air outlet being oriented so as to discharge the charge air towards the powerhead.

Marine engines having a supercharger

A marine engine has a powerhead having an cylinder block, a cylinder head, and a crankcase; a supercharger providing charge air for combustion in the powerhead, wherein the supercharger discharges the charge air to an outlet duct; and a charge air cooler cooling the charge air prior to combustion in the powerhead. The charge air cooler has an upstream inlet receiving the charge air from the outlet duct and a downstream outlet discharging the charge air to the cylinder head. The downstream outlet is coupled to the cylinder head by a first one of a rigid seal device and a flexible seal device and the upstream inlet is coupled to the outlet duct by a different, second one of the rigid seal device and flexible joint device.

Sealing configurations for marine engines having a supercharger and charge air cooler

A combination cooling/filtration device is for cooling and filtering lubricant in an outboard motor. The device includes a body; a lubricant cooler configured to cool the lubricant, the lubricant cooler having an inlet port that receives cooling fluid and an outlet port that discharges the cooling fluid; a filter configured to filter the lubricant; and a lubricant passage extending through the body. The lubricant passage is configured to convey the lubricant from upstream to downstream, and in particular to the lubricant cooler, then to the filter, and then to an engine of the outboard motor. The body is axially elongated from top to bottom, the filter is mounted on the top of the body, and the lubricant cooler is located in the body below the filter.

Combination lubricant/filtration device for outboard motors

A cooling system is for cooling a marine engine having an engine block and a cylinder head, and a supercharger configured to provide charge air for combustion in the marine engine. The cooling system has a charge air cooler configured to cool the charge air prior to combustion in the marine engine. The cooling system is configured to circulate cooling water from a body of water in which the marine engine is operating to the marine engine and then back to the body of water. The cooling system is further configured to convey the cooling water in parallel to the marine engine and the charge air cooler. A sprayer is configured to spray the cooling water into exhaust gas discharged from the marine engine. The cooling system is configured to convey the cooling water in series to the charge air cooler and then to the sprayer.

Cooling systems for marine engines having a supercharger

An outboard motor has a powerhead; a supporting cradle supporting the powerhead, the supporting cradle having port and starboard sides extending alongside opposite sides of the outboard motor; a resilient mount coupling the powerhead to the supporting cradle and being configured to absorb vibrations of the powerhead; and a tie bar mounting bracket having a head portion located aftwardly of the supporting cradle and further having port and starboard arms extending forwardly from the head portion alongside the opposite sides of the outboard motor and being coupled to the port and starboard sides of the supporting cradle, respectively. A cooling system conveys cooling water through the outboard motor and has a telltale outlet that discharges cooling water through the tie bar mounting apparatus.

A marine engine has first and second banks of cylinders; a supercharger configured to supply charge air for combustion in the first and second banks of cylinders; first and second charge air coolers configured to cool the charge air, wherein the first and second charge air coolers each have an upstream inlet that receives the charge air from the supercharger, a downstream outlet that discharges the charge air for combustion in the marine engine, and a bypass port for conveying a portion of the charge air, the bypass port being located downstream of the inlet and upstream of the outlet; a recirculation passage coupled to the first charge air cooler, the recirculation passage conveying the portion of the charge air from the bypass port of the first charge air cooler back to the supercharger; and a mounting plate coupled to the second charge air cooler, the mounting plate preventing flow of the portion of charge air through the bypass port of the second charge air cooler.

A cooling passage conveys cooling fluid between the crankcase cover and the supercharger so that the cooling fluid cools both in the crankcase and in the supercharger.

A marine engine has a crankcase having a crankshaft that rotates about a vertical crankshaft axis; a cover on the crankcase; and a cooling member disposed in the crankcase. The cooling member has an inner surface that faces the crankshaft and an outer surface that faces the cover. The cooling member is configured such that rotation of the crankshaft causes lubricant in the crankcase to impinge on and drain down both the inner and outer surfaces of the cooling member.

A catalyst housing has a housing inlet end that receives an exhaust gas flow from the internal combustion engine into the catalyst housing and an opposite, housing outlet end that discharges the exhaust flow out of the catalyst housing. A catalyst is disposed in the catalyst housing. The catalyst has a catalyst inlet end that receives the exhaust gas flow and an opposite, catalyst outlet end that discharges the exhaust gas flow. A catalyst mantel is on an outer periphery of the catalyst. The catalyst mantel has a mantel inlet end and an opposite, mantel outlet end. A radial flange is on at least one of the mantel outlet end and mantel inlet end. A connector mates with an inner diameter of the catalyst housing. The radially extending flange of the catalyst mantel is axially sandwiched between the connector and a radially inner shoulder of the catalyst housing.

Exhaust systems and methods of assembling exhaust systems for marine propulsion devices

An outboard marine engine comprises a vertically aligned bank of piston-cylinders; an intake camshaft that operates a plurality of intake valves for controlling inflow of air to the bank of piston-cylinders; an exhaust camshaft that operates a plurality of exhaust valves for controlling outflow of exhaust as from the bank of piston-cylinders; and a cam-to-cam connector that connects the intake camshaft to the exhaust camshaft such that rotation of one of the intake and exhaust camshafts causes rotation of the other of the intake and exhaust camshafts. The cam-to-cam connector is located vertically above a lowermost intake valve in the plurality of intake valves, vertically above a lowermost exhaust valve in the plurality of exhaust valves, vertically below an uppermost intake valve in the plurality of intake valves and vertically below an uppermost exhaust valve in the plurality of exhaust valves.

Arrangements for outboard marine engines having reduced width

An outboard marine engine comprises a vertically aligned bank of piston-cylinders; a camshaft that operates a plurality of valves for controlling flow of air with respect to the vertically aligned bank of piston-cylinders, the camshaft vertically extending between a lower camshaft end and an upper camshaft end; and a cam lobe at the upper camshaft end. Rotation of the camshaft causes the cam lobe to cam open an uppermost valve in the plurality of valves. A lubricant circuit extends through the camshaft and has a lubricant outlet located at the upper camshaft end. The lubricant outlet is configured to disperse lubricant onto the uppermost valve, which is located above an uppermost cam bearing bulkhead for the upper camshaft end.

Arrangements for lubricating outboard marine engines

An exhaust manifold is for an internal combustion engine on an outboard marine engine that is configured to power a propulsor to provide a thrust in a longitudinal direction. The exhaust manifold comprises an exhaust runner that transversely and longitudinally rearwardly conveys the exhaust gas from the internal combustion engine, an exhaust log that vertically upwardly conveys the exhaust gas from the exhaust runner, and an exhaust elbow that conveys the exhaust gas from the exhaust log vertically upwardly, longitudinally forwardly, and then vertically downwardly.
