Current cancer treatments such as surgery, radiation and chemotherapy have significant side-effects for the patients. New treatments are being developed to reduce these side-effects while giving doctors alternative methods to treat patients. This invention introduces a new method for treatment of malignant tumors including brain cancer, pancreatic cancer, lung cancer, and ovarian cancer. The method uses low-power RF wave to disrupt and kill cancer cells during mitosis resulting in shrinking the size of solid tumors. Direction of polarization of the electric field of the RF wave relative to the axis of division of the cancer cells has an impact on the ability of the RF wave in disrupting mitosis and killing the cancer cells. Since the orientation of the cancer cells in a tumor are random a method is needed to change the orientation of the applied RF wave spatially with time to maximize elimination of the cancer cells.

Method of polarization control of evanescent waves for treating tumors

In biological tissues, exposure to electromagnetic fields usually induces actuation and vibration of the underlying molecules which, from the perspective of the electromagnetic device, manifests as power absorption. It has been shown that increased power absorption of a low-power RF source can have positive enhancement in therapeutic, medical, and scientific procedures. However, often the enhanced power absorption is limited due to the electromagnetic properties of the tissue being treated. This invention introduces a method to modify the native electromagnetic properties of a targeted biological tissue to increase and enhance the electromagnetic power absorption within and increase treatment efficacy.

Due to the targeted approach of the evanescent waves, less RF energy is wasted in healthy cells.

Apparatus for treating tumors by evanescent waves

A system of modular multi-aperture reflector sheets for use in general and specialty luminaires is disclosed. These sheets, designed to be simple in design, manufacture, and installation, allows for enhancing, adjusting, varying, or correction of the light distribution provided by luminaires during production or deployment. The reflector sheets are made of highly-reflective, thin material and feature multiple apertures that are patterned to redirect the light output emerging from the output of a luminaire. The reflector sheets are intended to be used in combination with both standard and custom reflectors and replace complicated and expensive lenses and optics that are often deployed to modify luminaire light distribution. The sheets are modular and can be replaced easily, allowing for standard luminaires having multiple possible light distribution patterns without further complication. Also, custom multi-aperture reflector sheets can be designed, shipped, and installed easily if further modification or correction of the light distribution is desired.

Electrodeless high intensity discharge (HID) lamps have the promise of higher reliability and higher efficiency than traditional electroded high intensity discharge lamps. However, most electrodeless HIDs operate in the frequency range of around 400 MHz or higher resulting in expensive, inefficient RF drivers that reduce the overall efficacy of the lamp. Operating the lamp at lower frequencies results in substantial increase in the physical dimensions of the resonators used in traditional electrodeless HIDs. In this invention a novel wave-launcher technology is used allow the lamp housing's operating frequency to be independent of the physical dimensions of the lamp housing. This provides an avenue to increase the conversion efficiency of the RF driver and the efficacy of the lamp system.

Electrodeless high intensity discharge lamp with wave-launcher

In electrodeless HID lamps the radio frequency (RF) source is separated from a lamp housing in which vessel containing plasma arc is mounted. This lamp housing is usually designed to maximize the amount of RF energy incident on the plasma arc. The plasma arc, however, cannot convert the entire amount of incident RF energy into light and a portion instead is released as propagating radiation or remains localized RF electromagnetic fields in the vicinity of lamp. In this invention, we introduce field suppression probes: Small, configurable structures that are made of conductive materials that mount directly to the lamp housing or alternately the lamp fixture that is able to suppress unused RF energy that is emanated from the lamp housing or plasma. These probes, when configured with the lamp, can substantially suppress the unused RF energy and prevent EMI emissions and reduce RF feedback that can adversely affect the lamp.

Electrodeless high intensity discharge lamp with field suppression probes

A novel compact air-cavity electrodeless high intensity discharge lamp is disclosed that provides added flexibility in its design to improve performance and reliability. A coupling sleeve surrounds a bulb assembly that can replace the output coupling element require for effective operation of the lamp. The coupling sleeve couples the RF energy from the input coupling element to the bulb and the bulb assembly serves to provide the heat sinking needed for the bulb to operate within the temperature range necessary to achieve optimum performance with good reliability. Changing the design of the bulb assembly does not impact the resonant frequency of the air-cavity resonator. De-coupling the bulb assembly design from the operating frequency of the resonator gives more flexibility to designer to optimize the overall performance of the electrodeless HID lamp.

Low-frequency compact air-cavity electrodeless high intensity discharge lamps

An electrodeless plasma lamp and a method of generating light are described. The lamp may comprise a lamp body including a dielectric material having a relative permittivity greater than 2. A lamp drive circuit is coupled to the lamp body and configured to provide radio frequency (RF) power to the lamp body. A bulb containing a fill is positioned proximate the lamp body. The fill forms a plasma when the RF power is coupled to the fill from the lamp body. A lamp drive circuit including modulation control circuit is provided to control modulation of a frequency of the RF power across a frequency band. The circuit may be configured to provide RF power across a frequency band around a resonant frequency for the lamp body to reduce peak amplitude and electro-magnetic interference while maintaining average power to the plasma.

Discharge lamp using spread spectrum

An electrodeless plasma lamp and a method of controlling operation of a plasma lamp are provided. The plasma lamp may a power source to provide radio frequency (RF) power and a lamp body to receive the RF power from a feed. The lamp body may comprise a dielectric material having a dielectric constant greater than 2 and bulb is provided that contains a fill that forms a plasma that emits light when at least a portion of the RF power is coupled to the fill. A light guide directs light from the bulb to a photosensor that is shielded from light output from a front side of the lamp body. The lamp includes a drive circuit to control operation of the lamp based on a level of light detected by the photosensor.

Electrodeless plasma lamp and drive circuit

An electrodeless plasma lamp having a bulb containing a fill that forms a light-emitting plasma is described. The lamp includes a power amplifier to provide radio frequency power to the fill at a frequency in the range of about 50 MHz to 10 GHz and the power amplifier is configured to operate in at least two classes of operation. Control electronics of the lamp is configured to change the class of operation of the power amplifier during operation of the plasma lamp. For example, the power amplifier may be configured to operate as a class A/B amplifier during at least a first mode of operation and a class C amplifier during at least a second mode of operation.

Electrodeless plasma lamp systems and methods

An apparatus for improving linearity of an RF signal comprising: (a) a splitter configured to receive an input RF signal, and configured to split the input RF signal into two RF signals comprising a first input RF signal, and a second input RF signal; (b) an over-biased non-linear RF power amplifier configured to receive the first input RF signal and configured to generate an over-biased non-linear output signal having an over-biased non-linear distortion component; (c) an under-biased non-linear RF power amplifier configured to receive the second input RF signal and configured to generate an under-biased non-linear output signal having an under-biased non-linear distortion component; and (d) a combiner configured to combine the over-biased non-linear output signal and the under-biased non-linear output signal, and configured to output the RF signal having substantially cancelled over-biased and under-biased distortion components. The over-biased non-linear RF power amplifier is configured to receive an over-biased DC signal being greater than an optimum bias DC voltage. The under-biased non-linear RF power amplifier is configured to receive an under-biased DC signal being lower than the optimum bias DC voltage.
