Optimized bus powered peripheral battery charging includes a circuit to initiate a change in an advanced configuration and power interface (ACPI) state in a controller allowing charging of a peripheral device battery, the circuit including a signal converter coupled between an input port and the controller to sense when a the peripheral device battery is coupled to an input port and to restrict the controller from changing ACPI state multiple times for a given peripheral device battery coupling; and a ground loop detector coupled in parallel to the signal converter between the input port and the controller to allow the controller to know that the peripheral device battery has maintained being coupled to the input port.

Energy efficient method to wake host system for charging battery powered portable devices via bus powered external i/o ports

A current limiting MOSFET monitors power applied to a direct current boost regulator that powers an LED backlight to automatically shut off power to the boost regulator if the current exceeds a predetermined amount. An embedded controller interfaces with the current limiting MOSFET for normal control of operation of the boost regulator by turning the MOSFET on and off. An overcurrent alert is communicated from the MOSFET to the embedded controller if the current exceeds the predetermined amount so that the embedded controller shuts off power to the boost regulator and indicates the failure to an end user.

The external universal battery charging apparatus can include a maximum rated power supply determination unit. The method can include detecting a battery, identifying characteristics of the battery, and adjusting at least one parameter in universal battery charger circuitry in response to the characteristics of the battery such that optimum battery charging is achieved.

External universal battery charging apparatus and method

In a computer system having a plurality of devices coupled to a bus, the plurality of devices having a bus master mode allowing a selected one of the devices to function as a bus master and adapted to request designation as a bus master, an arbitration circuit and method of arbitration for determining which one of the plurality of devices is to function as the bus master when two of the plurality of devices coincidentally request the designation. The arbitration circuit comprises: (1) a tabulation circuit for tabulating a relative number of times each of the plurality of devices requests designation as bus master of each of the plurality of devices and (2) a comparison circuit coupled to the tabulation circuit for granting only one of the coinciding requests as a function of the relative number of times each of the plurality of devices requests designation as bus master to thereby allow a bus master priority level between the plurality of devices to change as a function of the relative request activity of the plurality of devices.
