Near-field energy transmitters for charging a rechargeable power source of an implantable medical device (IMD). In some cases, the transmitter may include an output driver that may drive a transmit coil such that near-field energy is transmitted to the IMD at a determined frequency. In some cases, the IMD may include a receiving coil that may capture the near-field energy and then convert the near-field energy into electrical energy that may be used to recharge the rechargeable power source. Since the rechargeable power source does not have to maintain sufficient energy stores in a single charge for the entire expected life of the IMD, the power source itself and thus the IMD may be made smaller while still meeting device longevity requirements.

Implantable medical device (IMD) such as leadless cardiac pacemakers may include a rechargeable power source. In some cases, the IMD may include a plurality of receiving coils that may capture a non-radiative near-field energy and then convert the near-field energy into electrical energy that may be used to recharge the rechargeable power source. Accordingly, since the rechargeable power source does not have to maintain sufficient energy stores in a single charge for the entire expected life of the IMD, the power source itself and thus the IMD, may be made smaller while still meeting device longevity expectations.

Disclosed herein, among other things, are methods and apparatus related to ablation catheter systems with wireless temperature sensing. The present subject matter provides an ablation catheter system including an ablation catheter configured to ablate a target zone of tissue and at least one temperature sensitive resonator coupled to the ablation catheter. The resonator is configured to wirelessly emit a signal indicative of a sensed temperature in response to an interrogation signal. The ablation catheter system also includes an external device configured to provide the interrogation signal and to receive and decode the emitted signal from the resonator. The temperature sensitive resonator is configured to be placed proximate to and in thermal conduction with the target zone of tissue and to resonate at a frequency dependent upon a temperature of the resonator when excited by the interrogation signal, in various embodiments.

Various embodiments concern shielding an implantable lead from RF energy associated with MRI scans. The lead can include a distal region, a proximal region, an intermediate region between the distal region and the proximal region, at least one electrode disposed on the distal region, and at least one conductor extending from the proximal region to the at least one electrode. Implanting of the lead can include coiling a portion of the intermediate region to define one or more loops and selectively shielding the one or more loops of the lead with a RF shield. The RF shield can comprise metallic material and can be configured to reduce RF signal coupling to the at least one conductor along the one or more loops.

A system including an external medical data telemetry device to communicate with an implantable medical device (IMD). The external medical data telemetry device includes a processor, a reconfigurable radio-frequency (RF) transceiver circuit, at least one far-field antenna, and a user interface. The reconfigurable RF transceiver circuit modulates an outgoing IMD data signal and demodulates an incoming IMD data signal using a modulation type that is selectable from a plurality of modulation types by the processor. The processor selects the modulation type using information entered by a user through the user interface.

Configurable medical telemetry radio system

An interface device for facilitating transfer of medical information between a patient implantable medical device (PIMD) and a remote network server via public network infrastructure is disclosed, the interface device using any of a plurality of generic network access devices having disparate communication protocols. First communication circuitry is configured to receive medical information from a patient implantable medical device (PIMD), and second communication circuitry configured to effect communication with the first communication circuitry and a generic network access device. A processor is coupled the first communication circuitry and the second communication circuitry. The processor is configured to control transmission of the medical information to the generic network access device and condition the medical device data in compliance with a predetermined medical information regulatory standard governing the PIMD. A method is also disclosed.

A medical device includes a pulse generator, a lead, and an electrode. The lead includes an electrode and a lead conductor connecting the pulse generator with the electrode via first and second conductive paths. The medical device includes first and second switches. The first switch is disposed along the first conductive path and includes an open state in the presence of a magnetic field and a closed state in the absence of the magnetic field. The second switch is disposed along the second conductive path and includes an open state when a voltage applied across the second switch is at or below a threshold voltage and a closed state when the voltage applied across the second switch exceeds a threshold voltage.

Various embodiments concern a method which may include communicating medical information between a PIMD and an interface module via a first channel in compliance with a predetermined medical information regulatory standard, preventing access to the PIMD via the interface module other than through the first channel, detecting a communication protocol used by an available generic network access device, selecting a communication protocol rule set from a plurality of communication protocol rule sets to effect communication between the interface device and an available generic network access device of a plurality of generic network access devices, and transferring at least some of the medical information to the remote network via a second channel established between the interface module and the available generic network access device using the selected communication protocol rule set.

Regulatory compliant transmission of medical data employing a patient implantable medical device and a generic network access device

A system for communicating with an implantable medical device via RF telemetry is disclosed which mitigates the effects of nulls caused by, e.g., multi-path distortion. In one embodiment, signals transmitted by the implantable device to an external device are simultaneously received with a pair of separate spaced apart first and second antennas. The antennas may provide spatial and/or polar diversity. The presence of nulls in the implantable device's transmission pattern can be determined by detecting an error rate in the signals received from the implantable device with each antenna.

Disclosed herein, among other things, is an implantable medical device header assembly with an optical interface. The header assembly can include a housing defining a cavity; an electrical contact disposed along the cavity; an electrical conductor configured to electrically couple the electrical contact with the implantable medical device; and an optical conductor. The header assembly can include a housing defining a first cavity for receiving a proximal end of an electrical lead; and a second cavity for receiving a proximal end of an optical lead. The header assembly can include a housing configured to be coupled to the implantable medical device, the housing defining a lead port for receiving a proximal end of a lead, the port configured to be in electrical and optical communication with the lead; a transducer disposed within the housing, and an electrical conductor disposed within the housing. Implantable medical device header with optical interface

A medical device includes a pulse generator, a lead, and an electrode. The lead includes an electrode and a lead conductor connecting the pulse generator with the electrode via first and second conductive paths. The medical device includes first and second switches. The first switch includes a non-conductive state in the presence of a magnetic field, the non-conductive state preventing formation of the first conductive path between the pulse generator and the electrode. The second switch includes a non-conductive state that prevents formation of the second conductive path between the pulse generator and the electrode. The first switch in the non-conductive state and the second switch in the non-conductive state electrically shields the electrode from electromagnetic radiation and induced voltages during a magnetic resonance imaging procedure.

Embodiments of the invention are related to electro-optical implantable sensors, amongst other things. In an embodiment, the invention includes an implantable medical device including a housing defining an interior volume, the housing comprising a housing wall and defining an aperture. The implantable medical device can include an optical sensor assembly coupled to the housing wall. The optical sensor assembly can occlude the aperture in the housing wall. The optical sensor assembly can include an electro-optical module including an optical excitation assembly and an optical detection assembly. The optical sensor assembly can also include a chemical sensing element configured to detect a physiological analyte by exhibiting a change in optical properties. An optical window can be disposed between the electro-optical module and the chemical sensing element. The optical window can be configured to allow the transmission of light between the electro-optical module and the chemical sensing element. Other embodiments are also included herein.
